Old school for me. Because I’m old and so are my saws. Lol I bought em new in the 90’s. Still using em.

I bought two 044s in the early '90s, while logging at the family ranch in Montana. I used them both until 2000, then started using them again from 2010 to 2017. Both saws still start and run as they should; neither saw has ever been back to a saw shop for repairs. I still have the saws with 28 inch bars on them and lots of extra bars and chains, ready to go. I think the 044 is about as good as it gets for a mid-sized saw with great chain speed. Cheers.

Just bought a 400 last week. I really like this saw. What sets this saw apart from others is how smooth it runs as well as lack of weight. It’s not all about numbers. With that said, I might be sending it to Joe soon for porting.

I bought a Stihl 440 new in 2007. I have the original sales slip and could sell the 440 for about what I paid for it. The 409c stock specs nearly the same as a 440. I used the 440 tree farming, commercial logging, firewood ...you name it. I am cutting firewood with it daily. 440 is a legend and worth every penny. Maybe keep running 440 and get a 462 too. Update my ms250 to a 261. I have a Stihl 192c rear handle prune saw for branches.

I really didn’t expect them to be that close. Kudos to you Joe on the porting gains. I have to say I’m surprised you shifted the exhaust lower on the 400 - I initially expected you to favour RPM over compression (not sure why, just kind of assumed the 400 would be a screamer with it’s lightweight piston and strato design 🤷🏼‍♂️). I learned something today that I look forward to considering on future builds of my own - thanks for sharing 🙏🏻 As always, you are a scholar and a gentleman.

I recently took an 064 in to stihl to price a new piston and cylinder, the saw had no compression thanks to a neighbor who I made the mistake of letting him borrow it. The stihl rep was there that day and I asked if I would be better off buying a new similar saw or rebuilding the 064. Stihl stood there and said rebuild the old saw, you’ll be better off! the rebuild was 800, a new saw would have been 1400 or so.

I'll take any old school pro model stihl chainsaw over most of the new stihl stuff any day. Only new saws stihl puts out that I like are the 261 362 and the 462. Most new stihl stuff is garbage. The 500i is quite nice but I don't think it offers anything over a good built 462 tuned in real well. The stihl MS 440 is probably my favorite saw that stihl made. Nice no nonsense work on that 400 and while I love the old saws, the lighter and better vibration damped saw is a winner for me. Ive been running a 362 for awhile now, and been really happy with it. Only thing Ive done with mine is a WCS muffler and air filter which really woke it up, and swapped to a 25" light bar with a half skip chain.
@7eis
@7eis 2 года назад
362 is awesome with a 25 light bar. Got the reach for blocking down, excellent bump up in bar length and power from my top handle. awesome positioning in the tree with the wrap handle. 25" is the sweet spot where I can work very close to the ground without bending over or squatting. For more than a tank of bucking I'll grab my 500 or 660 from the van though.
@CorwinBos
@CorwinBos 2 года назад
@@7eis Yup, I can borrow a 660 with a 36" if I need it, but I very seldom need a saw that big for what I do. That 25" bar is a back saver though, as Im 6'7", even though my buddies think its just too much. I ran a full house chain on that 25" for a bit, but I found the saw was just a little under powered for it. Switching to a 1/2 skip and being able to keep the revs up helps a ton. Only thing I should have done different when I bought the saw was getting a full wrap handle on it.

I wish he would stop modding dealership only stuff, 99 percent of people aren't going to buy a thousand dollar saw and mod it. I don't mind testing the new crap stock just to have a performance goal to meet or exceed. I have zero desire to screw with that mtronic horseshit and a magnesium piston either. All i care about is how tough the saw is, spending my money longevity over everything and function over style, only a moron gives two shits what the tool looks like. As far as weight goes, if a pound or two bothers you that much you shouldn't be using a chainsaw go play with your toys, you should be strong, if not don't run a chainsaw anyways your too soft. I'm already fed up with the complete pussafying of grown men as it is, if it's too heavy then go play with your crank geek.

It would be interesting to see that 400 with more intake timing. I ported mine so the intake opens at 85 or 170 duration. Also opened the strato intake into the main intake as well. So out of curiosity I copied your 395 recipe. I have typically taken a bit more material than you are and run a bit more blow down but I love your dyno information and its proven a few things to be pure myth. So anyway I build this 395 to see if it goes better than mine. Yep it did. It had more snap off the bottom and more midrange, I think mine has a bit more top end but I prefer your port job. You do bloody nice work Joe and having a dyno is the only way you can developed saw as you do. I'd like to thank you for saving me several hours grinding. I have also been cutting the muffler inlet bigger on my CNC and matching the cylinder outlet to it, this is a fair bit of work and I'm not sure it's even worth it watching your dyno results. My only criticism would be that your videos give the impression this is pretty easy to do and happens quickly but I know full well how much effort your are putting into this off camera. I have a dirty old stock 044 and an XS400c. I use the 400 more. It annihilates logs.

Im not a huge fan of the 400. seams like its a saw that didnt need to be made. if you didnt want a 362 why not just buy a 462 or a 500i... I would absolutely chose either of those over the 400.. Yea I guess they cost a little bit more but if you dont have the scratch for a 462 getting the 362 is just fine I guess. Now that the 362 is almost 1000 to me its a MEH saw at that price. I would take a 462 to me its on another level of power over the 362 if thats your goal is to cut. paying 200 whatever more is an obvious choice to me. But not everyone needs a power house I guess.

Do you try to improve upon these numbers ever or just stick with them?

I’ll take the old school 044 everytime over the 400c … 400c IS a nice saw but will it be around 20,30yrs from now? With the strato port controlled air-leak engine design imho no way

Just take the old school 440 and cut the new fangled 400c in half. I can't stand any of the stihl strato engine equipment.

First and foremost is cost, parts for an 044 are all over the place with the 400c your stuck going to the dealers, i absolutely hate being beholden to the fricken dealerships period.

The new smog saws aren't designed to make power,they are designed to run hot,burn clean,and not emit hydrocarbons

It's only a win for the Stihl engineers who have been paid to achieve nothing for the last 25 years.

Combustion engines are under heavy regulations to become more fuel efficient and even more environmentally friendly. These regulations often cause product advancement to slow down.
