And yet they learn infinitely more with that rote memorization. Those who truly want to learn will use that as a springboard to deeper knowledge. Ntm, the Amish have rationalizations/preconceived notions to explain why their way is better, meaning they are at least aware of how parts of their culture are perceived to have shortcomings. I suspect education is a prominent one of those aspects, as the Amish are essentially clueless beyond the most rudimentary knowledge and practical knowledge.

They're from America. The midwest. But obviously it's a Brit show and the families (again, obviously) are British. Then again, even though they're American (the Amish) they may as well be from Eastern Russia lol bc they know very little about our history and what our schools are like etc

Exams are made to test what you’ve been learnt if you have been taught everything in the syllabus it has been a success if you want to learn more argue for more topics to be put in and have more in the exam. If you feel like you’re missing out learn at home.

They are not from the Midwest, I would assume Pennsylvania where a lot of Amish, of course not all of them though

I think the point was that it was someone who she was related to and that she looked like, notice the camera panned from the painting to her face several times, she was making fun of herself to make them feel more comfortable and realize that she had humility regardless of the ostentatious home. Not mean spirited in my opinion.

i havent seen that part yet but possibly because the amish kids are very sheltered and too fragile to be pushed to do things they have been told since kids are forbidden? English kids know about the world and are free to try on clothes and do things without having to worry that they will go to hell for doing so. I cant even imagine what being raised like that and then thrown into the very things you've been told are the devil's doing must feel like.

It makes perfect sense. The Amish have religious convictions that prevent them from dressing like an 'englisher' or do things like drink/party etc. The reverse is not true. A british person can toss on an amish dress and cook/clean/pick vegetables without offending their faith (or lack thereof). It makes sense to me that the Amish teens would likely not take part in a lot of what we consider standard activities.

I think its because in the normal world we work less any way. In the Amish community they work all the time. They don't think playing a video game, or relaxing, or almost most of the things we do as fun are fun to them. Work is fun to them, if there were more work related things they did in the normal world i think they would've participated more. They participated in the archery, shooting, and riding the boat they sang in the first episode. they just didn't participate in the partying, drinking, and smoking. I believe u don't have to consume alcohol and smoke to have fun. Im pretty sure they believe that to, i mean they even danced. They never dance were there from. We simply work way less than them that's all. When the english went to the amish community they mainly did childrens chores so they didn't feel over worked, and the amish allowed them to still talk and communicate. They just took there electronics and asked for quiet when fishing. The amish went to the normal world to see what it was like. The english went to the Amish community to see what it was like. Amish people just work harder where there from. it seems that the english participated more, but they really just experienced little of what living like an Amish is. They did childrens chores. Do the Amish really still Pennsylvania Dutch (old dialect of German) as widely as they say? I get the impression that while it is still spoken, the English language is becoming more and more of the everyday language for younger Amish people (less than age forty or so). Maybe because this is a TV series, but I have yet to have heard our Amish teens speak in Pennsylvania Dutch to each other. Becky's Bible and daily devotions were in English.

In the United States, hundreds of years ago when they first arrived in the US, the actual English were the only really outsiders for them, so they always referred to outsiders, which were mostly English, as "English". Also, they speak German, and everyone else speaks English, so they refer to them as "English" for that reason.
