Why take these children all the way to London to sit inside, play video games, explore violent areas, attend a memorial for somebody murdered, etc. ? Why not show the women other women their age studying at a higher educational institution? Show them cinematic masterpieces and advanced medicinal technology? Take them to an amusement park, or even simply to ride on a carousel? Take them to museums, to galleries and off-broadway performances? Show these kids some of the beautiful things life has to offer. This is their only chance to experience it truly.

Tori Taylor The point is to show the young Amish people that the outside world isn't worth abandoning their ways for, not to make them change their minds. If they saw the beauty and wonder humans have created with technology and societal progress they might want to leave the faith, and that's unacceptable. (to them)
@LolaKlein

This documentary was Amish propaganda to prove their point that it's better to live the Amish way. If you want to hear the truth of living in an Amish community, you have to hear it from people who left their community and were shunned. There are a lot of memoirs and stories showing how brainwashed and helpless they are, specially women. There is a lot of secrets and pressure to keep abuse and crime under the carpet so that Amish are seen as this beautiful pure community.
@printerman9834
@printerman9834 3 года назад
I think it's unfair to say they live an "unreal" life. Every community has a different way of life, but yes, they definitely ought to have shown them something other than ghettos and useless crap.

@@HoratioAccel nope, teenagers don't want to go to museums, study history or literature and have a great cultural background. They want to go out, drink, have sex, listen to crappy music and do nothing. If the Amish wanted to leave their families for that life, (study in the university, go to museums...), Then it would prove that the Amish families and their lifestyle teach better values than 90% of the society.

What's odd in the teens' Rumspringa adventure is that someone arranged for them to go see London, but all they saw was a sterile urban landscape in a shitty neighborhood. Video games? Really? They could play video games at somebody''s house a couple of miles from their farms. Why not stay in a beautiful, historical area of the city? Why not go to museums and ancient churches and archaeological sites? How about spending a week attending classes at Oxford or Cambridge? What a bizarre introduction to "the world," as though you either live like the Amish, or like these distressed urban teens.

I'm talking about no indoor toilets, no electronics(except flashlights), old reel lawn mowers(push powered), absolutely no engine powered vehicles(including tractors), no bicycles, no buttons on the clothes(old style hook and eye). I could go on and on. They are literally living in the 1800s if I may say so.

Because this is a heavily produced show meant for entertainment. The producers of these shows put the participants in uncomfortable situations to push out bigger reactions for the show. The choice was deliberate to make the Amish seem even more "pure" in this first episode. You can see in the later episodes they "develop" as characters because they're in more comfortable and enjoyable situations and locations. Everything is planned out heavily for the story and the arch of the Amish kid's characters.

This was MUCH better than TLC's "Breaking Amish." Meet the Amish is more educational and doesn't try to exploit these Amish youth like TLC does by feeding off drama to keep ratings up. Would love to see more like this. It would be neat to see an Amish teen live in lets say an Old Order Mennonite Community to see their reaction to the differences. There are just so many different Amish and Mennonite sects with their own unique views and practices and we need more shows like this to help educate people. I got to talk to his brothers and sisters to get a good idea what it was like. I helped make dinner. The whole family must sit at the dinner table. Sunday he picked me back up after Church. We played volleyball with his friends. Later we got the atvs and mini dirt bikes out. He also came to the town where i lived. We all hung out in a park and played baseball, threw frisbee and whatever else we felt like doing. When his time was up we had a very long conversation. Because of who his family was i could not ask him to leave. Nor could i join being Mennonite. We left on good terms. I enjoyed the time we had together. His family was great. In the Middle of the Earth, in the Land of the Shire lives a brave little hobbit whom we all admire. Now hobbits are a peace loving folk you know, they never like to worry and they take things slow. They don't like to travel away from home, they just like to eat and be left alone. But one day Bilbo was asked to go, on a great adventure to the caves below. To help some dwarves get back their gold, stolen by a dragon in the days of old.

I'm watching this and I think to myselves: we are the 'outside' world, the crazy ones. Imagine the happiness, and innocence in the Amish community, they teach their children what we all learn sooner or later: fashion, drugs, possessions, money, pride, promiscuousness, it's all evanescent and it all doesn't bring true happiness. What brings true happiness is how the Amish and Buddhists live: calmness, simplicity, letting go, and most importantly: family and having meaningful relations with other human beings.

It's nice to fantasize about peace and quiet, but we can't all live our lives on some Amish farm. Too much of anything can be bad. Personally, I believe an equal balance of peace and chaos is what keeps the world going. We need forward-thinking and chaotic people in our world, whether it's to challenge the status quo or to take a risk on behalf of furthering our society. I could definitely have a vacation living in a simple and peaceful society like with the Amish, but I don't think I could ever stay permanently. That's just my 2 cents, anyway.
