Hey guys just an update - I've been away for work over the past week and returned ready to edit my Hurricane build video only for my computer to be out of action (some Motherboard problem I think) so unfortunately it's going to be a while yet until I get my computer fixed 😭 in the meantime I hope you've been enjoying the Telford content. Hopefully I'll see you soon!

Kaze they do, but tanks and planes usually aren’t that relevant to the actual topic. For example, the treaty of Versailles, the Great Depression and the League of Nations is far more important than the Panzers if you’re talking about the origins of WWII.

I am 67 Y.O, and I used to build models of cars and planes when I was a young teenager, but I gave it up however, when I found girls were a lot more fun. Recently however, I brought my 11 Y.O grandson a model tank by Tamiya for him to build, as he had shown some interest in the many modelling videos on RU-vid. However, as he did not show any further interest in putting it together, I built it myself. I have now caught the modelling bug once more and I have completed four more tanks and a couple of dioramas, spent a lot of money on paint, an airbrush, tools, and I have about six more kits in my ‘stash’ to do. Like these young modellers, I’m hooked (once again).
@garylawless3608
@garylawless3608 4 года назад
M N That’s true M N, but I was going to help him with it, he just lost interest. Maybe he thought it too difficult. He does however, show a lot of appreciation for the armour models I have since completed. Maybe something else, as you suggest, will get him interested in the first instance, and he can choose something a bit more difficult as he gets a little older. I’ll give it a go. I watched this post again and realised that I should have followed the good advice from those youngsters and given him something a lot more simple to start with. Thanks for the reply, and cheers from Australia.

Most if not all members are in my age bracket. So good to see younger generation building instead of playing video games.

This is wonderful. My father got me into model building when I was very young, and I built my first one on my own before I could read. I was supposed to be napping, but the snap together 1/72 F-4E sitting in the box on my dresser was far more interesting. The instructions had diagrams, so that was good enough for me. Watching the interviews really takes me back - especially when they were giving advice. It's all the same things I learned and discovered on my own journey through model building around that age. And it reminds those of us with decades of experience that there is a lot of joy in the simple act of building and finishing a model, without worrying so much about strict accuracy or absolute perfection, and sometimes it's good to just throw all of that to the wind and just build.

I started building kits and balsa boats and planes from the age of 8, this lead me eventually to do a apprenticeship in machining that has stood me very well over my working life, model building gives you many skills other than just the building the model, these young people can read a plan, following instruction, develop patience and improve your cognitive skills, unlike the kids who spend there time glued to a screen, all great life skills to be used for the rest of your life, great video..

What’s in a name? Sometimes quite a lot. When researching the King Arthur tale, l came across reference to the Morrigan. Anyone who has seen the film “Excalibur” will remember the final scene where Arthur’s body is being taken on a boat out to sea accompanied by 3 maidens. They represent the sisters known collectively as “the Morrigan” in Celtic mythology. The Morrigan is also described as the shape-shifting Celtic goddess of War, Fate and Death. She also presided over rivers, lakes and fresh water, in addition to being the patroness of revenge, night, magic, prophecy, priestesses and witches. She is probably the inspiration of “the lady in the lake” who takes the sword Excalibur back into the watery depths. She appears as a raven to Cuchulainn, the great warrior, in the very ancient Ulster Cycle manuscript. That is one lucky young modeller who has been given such an interesting name.

Wow, that young girl's diorama was awesome! 1000x better than MY first diorama. We used to have a cable access channel and a local hobby shop used to put on a show. In grainy hard to see black and white. I learned how to mix white glue with actual beach sand to put down as a base then imprint it with the tank treads to make it look like the tank had rolled up. Couldn't even THINK about an air brush and compressor back then. The cheapest I could find would have cost $400. Now? damn you get get a setup for $50.00. I SO wanted to get into R/C planes but back then, easily $2000 to get in the air AND you needed a radio transmitter licence. Now you can get in the air for $40 CDN. and the thing will have a gyro. Back then, the ONLY planes were kits you had to build from scratch too with nitro engines. Imagine spending a month building a trainer and crashing it first flight? Now with the foamies they can take a crash and go right back into the air.....My first plane was a Bixler and I crashed that thing easily 20 times before it was no longer flyable so I bought another bare bones for $30 and transferred everything into it.

@@quickkits You have it much easier than us old timers did in many ways but the sheer cost of the kits and paints these days is incredible. I used to pay $1.99 CDN to $3.99 for a Revell Model car kit and they're not upwards of $35 and as high as $50.00. One thing you also have now: selection of water based paints like Tamiya. All I had was testors PLA enamel and it sucked for painting bodies. It was thick like syrup and would obliterate fine details and small parts. You also have youtube now with many people showing tips and tricks. Some of the diorama builders offer incredible instructions. Not to mention (bad for the local shops though) you have access to China production so many of the tools etc are dirt cheap.

I am intrigued by the suggestion to start with plane kits, as I used to find tanks easier to complete. This might have been subjective, though, as some tank kits do have the interior included, which adds to the complexity. But my opinion has changed. Recently, I built a 1/144 High Grade Geara Zulu from Bandai, and I have to say it was probably the smoothest and least problematic builds I have attempted. The parts snap together like a glove and there is part separation for colour, making painting unnecessary. The instructions were excellent too, featuring logical well thought and laid out illustrations. Once completed it stood about the height of a 1/12 figure, with acceptable articulation at the joints. (I probably got the kit for how the monoeyed mech looked like a WWII German infantryman, mainly due to the similar helmet shape and the use of a StG44-like rifle)

Airbrushing is an absolute must for glossy paints like on any commercial or space vehicles, but i dont think it's really necessary for military stuff. It sure does provide a fine finish, but a more crude finish could give a bit more realism to a battleworn tank. After all, airbrushing during WWII wasn't always an option.
