My hot take on what I would like to see from manufacturers in terms of a full family of full color point source units from 60 or 1600 watts, so that we don't have to mix and match between a number of companies with different configurations. 😀 I'm mixing and matching now and that has helped me come up with a wish list...

Luke, thank you for your great reviews over all these years! This one is no exception. In fact, there are many people who think like this. Ever since LEDS became a strong presence in the industry, I've wished for this. It's true different manufacturers have offerings and features that appeal to different people, but more of them should take a note from history. Remember Mole Richardson? Truly a complete line of a family of fixtures.

I completely agree! And I have a few more personally: A Bowens mount that doesn't wiggle and sag. I believe the PROLYCHT Orion 675 solved this one with their rotating/tightening mount. Head cables that are longer than 3 meters. Never made of PVC or anything that will freeze rock solid in the cold. Projection attachments with a rotating barrel, a and accept type B gobos. Fresnels that accept standard size scrims and actually have slots for them.

Amen! Maybe Aputure will be the one with enough resources to do it, now that they acquired Prolycht. Would love to see some Aputure RGBACL lights. It's very hard to go back to RGBWW after seeing a light that can output a real cyan and a real yellow.

Amen! Constancy in a brand would be nice. These lighting companies should be looking at how the camera companies form their line ups. There is always a level from beginner to advanced and from high to low. This is a methodology they should be adapting instead of just releasing random lights into the wild every year.

The dishes would be OK if manufacturers gave up on trying to maximize output stats(hot spots and faceted surfaces) and focused on even beams(output and color temp) with a single shadow.
@sebastian_trzaska
@sebastian_trzaska 10 месяцев назад
Agree on priorisizing even beam. Single shadow is impossible with a faceted dish, though. With the older non-faceted dishes you can still get some double shadows, though they are more diffuse. A fresnel is in my experience even better in this regard and I prefer it over a non-faceted dish if I'm using it to light the subject directly. If I'm shooting through a frame then the extra output of the faceted dish can come in handy.

Totally with you on this list. I wonder how many more release cycles we will have to watch come and go before at least one of the major light companies has even half your list covered.

I agree on all those points! I recently saw a video Gaffers Salon did in detail explaining why we need a spotlight modifier that spins the barrel too. I generally feel like these companies do listen to us and generally gives us what we need more so than the camera industry does, but a lot of these issues have been issues for a long time. I feel like some of it have been issues with moving over to led vs conventional lighting, such as the spotlight barrel.

I really like the Prolycht 675, and the form factor. If they’d only continue this giving us a 80, 300, the 675 and a 1200 and maybe a 2600 unit, I’d be all in, and add the dedo optics to it. Hope that’s the plan from the collab with Aputure. Besides that I would go for kinos, astera and creamsource vortex (hopefully we will see a sky panel 360 equivalent from creamsource..) All I would ever need.. Appreciate your thought, and hope manufacturers are watching!
@meetthegaffer
@meetthegaffer 10 месяцев назад
We may not be seeing that many more large-faced soft panels like the 360 if manufacturers get the feedback that clusters of smaller units are actually easier to rig on the larger shows. It may be more about making smaller units easier to combine quickly.
@Sigsgaard123
@Sigsgaard123 10 месяцев назад
I agree with the cluster solutions, it is nice, but also substantially heavier and time consuming to setup. But boy does it look nice with the 4 piece vortex yoke. Also being able to spot the beam and mixing diffusions is pretty damn cool. IMHO the Prolycht 675 and Vortex8 are close to perfect.

Due to all of these issues that you mentioned, I skipped out on COB’s for the most part. I tried some early bicolor fresnels and found them incredibly disappointing. The intensifiers are just an embarrassing kludge to dealing with the physics problems of working with these COB’s. I think we will know we have passed the infancy stage of COB lighting when the intensifiers disappear.
@meetthegaffer
@meetthegaffer 10 месяцев назад
I don’t know how this will turn out, but I’m not sorry for going all in on COB’s and/or other point source LEDs. In a lot of ways, the transition to LEDs renewed my interest in lighting and sent me down a road of discovery that I am very thankful for. I’m especial grateful to Aputure for sending me so much gear as they were growing by leaps and bounds in the early days. Since then it’s been a thrill seeing other players come into their own. Crazy times of growth eventually settle down, and maybe now we can take stock of where we are and fill in some of the gaps that were created in the rush to be first to market with the next, high-output unit. 😀
@CaseyPreston
@CaseyPreston 10 месяцев назад
@@meetthegaffer Yes, Arri seems to have been trying to accomplish your wish list with the Orbital, but they are so late to market and relatively expensive that they don't even seem to be in the game anymore. The first COB's that I really liked using were the Prolycht, especially the 675, and the Dedo collaboration seemed very promising. Hopefully, the Aputure acquisition isn't a step back. The news out of IBC is going to be very interesting to watch.

Fiilex has been hands down my favorite light in a long time. Love the entire range. Luke get your hands on the new G3 from Fiilex. They have some other items up there sleeve coming soon...
@meetthegaffer

They have been the most consistent in terms of having a full color family of units. Price and fresnel only designs can slow their adoption, but they know their audience. The G3 is a great addition.

I feel like theater lighting is a bit ahead of the curve here: we get fairly standardized mounts, more sophisticated color mixing like eight colors in the ETC Source Four Series 3 fixtures, and control software like ETC Eos (be it Nomad or one of the actual consoles) that not only understands what to do with color mixing that's more advanced than RGBW, but also has a solid built-in database to color-match across fixture types. Blackout has no idea what to do with my Series 3 ellipsoidals and it makes me sad; meanwhile I can dial in e.g. R26 and right away my LED ellipsoidal, my gelled tungsten unit, and my moving head are all pushing out exactly the same color. Glorious.
@meetthegaffer
@meetthegaffer 10 месяцев назад
In many ways that is true, but outside of ETC in some of their Fos4 fixtures I’m not sure if the mixing of color in theatrical units gets you whites that are the best for cinema cameras. If we just needed color, that would be one thing; theatrical lighting is way ahead of us in terms of number of colors and mover tech and RDM, but getting a good skin tone along with the color capabilities is not as easy, apparently. Blackout Lighting Console is inches away from the version 2.0 finish line, but those last few inches have been a challenge. Filmmaking incorporates a ton of theatrical units and practices because we like to steal from the best, but there are plenty of cinema needs that are particular to us and don’t cross over as well.

Yup. A big question for me is why isn't Aputure working on better full color point source LEDs with better modifiers? The 1200D was a huge hit. So why abandon that size and versatile form factor for larger units that require more robust power solutions? Their LS 600C is a great light. I own a bunch of them and have asked my electrics to buy them too. But why don't they have a great, full color 60C and 300C Aputure (not Amaran) Pro version? With IP rating, fresnel options, rotating spotlight options, etc... I want to see a full lineup of full color options from one of the major manufacturers with all the options you listed at 60/300/600/1200.

@jamesburton1050 Restate your initial question with more detail. My rant was about units that are not only bi-color, but full color; it an attribute, a capability, not a brand.
@jamesburton1050
@jamesburton1050 10 месяцев назад
@@meetthegaffer if I was looking for lights that were daylight, tungsten, or bicolor and fit the applicable criteria you mentioned (good selection for range of 60-1600 watts, focusable, modifiable, good mounting, etc), what would you recommend? Or, if you could take a daylight, tungsten, or bicolor fixture and ask the manufacturers, "make me a full color light as good as this", what light would be your example? I'm trying to figure out if really good fixture lines are out there, just not in full color, or if we're still fixing that problem too. Hope this makes sense.
@meetthegaffer
@meetthegaffer 10 месяцев назад
@jamesburton1050 Got it. Nobody really has a full crmx enabled family from small to large in the way that I explained it, whether in daylight or bi-color. If you are OK with mostly fresnel-only, maybe Fiilex comes the closest, and that’s full color. If you pull out crmx and some of the other wishlist items like IP rating then Aputure and Nanlite/Nanlux can fill out a broad range of units.
