I stumbled upon your channel. I know nothing about chickens, ducks, or any other barnyard animals. But as an animal lover and meat eater at the same time, I just wanted to say you guys are awesome. You treat the animals with such care and respect. I've seen so many ranchers mistreat thier herd. With the local animal control outright telling me that if it's a food animal there really isn't a minimum standard of care required. So seeing how gently and lovingly you treat every animal restores my faith a little in humanity.

They are called Guin or Guin-hen. They are the result of being a cross between a guinea and a chicken. They need to get more genetics from the guinea parent and be closer to it to actually survive. Also, the incubation rate for the those eggs is usually closer to guinea than chicken. Ones that are more chicken than guinea do not usually survive. The guinea can also be bred with pheasants and turkeys to produce offspring. Due to the cross though they are usually sterile much like the cross of horse and donkey. If you want to learn more look into game bird hybridization. I have been researching this for the past few weeks and find it fascinating.
@lynild
@lynild 4 года назад
Technically speaking, first generation hybrids will always get 50% genetics from each parent not more from one than the other
@zachmiller6581
@zachmiller6581 4 года назад
@@lynild This would be the case if you were to breed for example a jungle fowl with a chicken. However, the chicken and guinea are two distinct species. Each species has a different amount of chromosomes than the other so they cannot usually get a perfect 50/50 match up of DNA . When chickens and guineas breed the offspring have between 74-78 chromosomes. Birds that have 75 chromosomes for example and get that 1 extra chromosome from the chicken are less likely to survive. These species also have some identical DNA. Which yes may have technically come from the chicken but is already in the guineas DNA. This is more so what I meant by more guinea than chicken. 50/50 with no or 1 extra chromosome of shared DNA between the species. So it would be more 50% guinea, 50% chicken and 1% shared DNA. Edit. Chickens and jungle fowl are two different species. However, chickens were bred over thousands of years from a few different jungle fowl. Each of the jungle fowl species have 74 chromosomes. We get domestic chickens so far and every now and then sprinkle in more jungle fowl DNA.

It’s so sad when you find chicks that have been brained like that. I’ve been lucky to get most of them through it, but sometimes it’s just too badly injured. I don’t know why some hens do that. I have a few hens that will raise ANYTHING, egg or chick, you put under them. I also have hens that will hatch out and kill their own chicks. Those gals aren’t allowed to have eggs anymore. I just raise my chicks in the house when I can to avoid that. Only have had it happen a handful of times over the years, but once is enough to break your heart whether they make it or not.

Hi! Thank you for such fun farm videos! Two things: a friend once told me that an old timer told him that in order to get guineas to come back to the coop each night, you need to let them out one the first day, then two the second day, then 3 the third, etc. This keeps them coming back to the same place to roost. The other thing is for frostbite in rooster combs (and this I've used with my roosters, with great success) Hypericum Perf. 200c plus Arnica Montana 3c in their water for a few days, or until their combs resume normal coloring. (Generally within a week.) These medicines are inherently nontoxic and are available on Amazon.

That poor little chick. I knew he wasn’t gonna make it, still made me sad. I grew up on a farm and we had a Rhode Island Red rooster breed with our Bantam chickens, they came out all different colours and grew larger than average bantams. One day I was out playing with my dog on a day off school and I heard the hens going NUTS and they were my responsibility so I ran over and somehow a chick had gotten in the water bucket. It was swimming somehow, it should’ve drowned. I brought it in an dried it off and kept in the my sweater and it did just fine afterwards and we changed the water bucket.
@cybercat29
@cybercat29 3 года назад
I remember being told by my Mom a similar thing happened to a chick on the family farm. Dad rescued a chick that had gotten into a shallow pan of water. The chick was too cold to move so Dad brought it inside and Mom wrapped the chick in a dry rag to dry it off. Mom warned up another rag on the kettle sitting on the wood annex. She then wrapped the chick in the second dry rag while drying off and warming up the first rag. Mom kept alternating between the two rags until the chick was dried off and peeping happily. Dad took the chick back to its mother and it grew into a good sized chicken.

@MaryAnnNytowl
@MaryAnnNytowl 3 года назад
This happens more than you would think, and it often ends badly, as it doesn't take long for them to get too cold to swim any more. On top of that, chicks can drown themselves in even shallow pans! Any time we've had little ones, we have made sure any water sources they could get to were filled with pebbles where they could get water, between the round rocks, and still not get IN the water to get chilled or drowned. Then we discovered waterers designed for quail! They have a smaller water-holding base, so the chicks can't get in them and drown! Even the teeny little quail babies (which we've also often raised) can't get in them and drown. So that's ALL we use, for any kind of chicks!

It’s sad some of the baby Ginny chicks didn’t make it especially after you put it back in the incubator. Trying to keep it warm and give it a better chance on life. It’s a shame the broody hen wouldn’t sit on those eggs to keep them warm. But the ones that didn’t make it, are certainly very cute as is your son when he is hearing them as gently as he sees his parents do. Guinea x Chicken hybrids, aka Guin-Hens When confined together, chickens and guineas will interbreed on occasion, and sometimes the result is a fertile egg. Survival rate in these hybrids is higher if they are more like the guinea parent. Thank you for making videos for me to watch! They are very entertaining for me. And I love all your pets, and especially all the birds! Love your channel ❤️

In fact, when August temperatures hit over 100° it’s my naked neck chickens that are perfectly comfortable and it’s all the other chickens that have to be misted or given calcium to prevent eggbinding or simply die in the heat. Naked neck chickens are very friendly happy and healthy birds.

When I was a child, we had a goat in with our sheep. "Irk" was a billy. He was a little orphan and we put him in with the sheep and he grew up with the bumb lams. I don't know what breed he was but he was smaller than some of the ewes. And there was never any notion that he could breed the ewes. He was in with the ewes for a few years before the first "geep" lambs were born. That year there were four, with course, wavy, colored, goat fur (one red, one brown like the billy, and two black) born to three ewes. We even had the local t.v. Station come and film a section piece on them. The following few years we would see one or two a year, in spite of the fact that we did always have bucks to breed the ewes. Then the papa goat, "Irk" died. None of the "geep" ever lambed and except for one, never got as big as their mothers. My father did tan a couple of their pelts, but they've since been lost or sold. My grandparents (dad's folks) had run goats with sheep for many years, but they always had nanny goats too, for milk, so the billys never bothered the ewes. Of course, now it is known that this can happen, but at the time, it was extremely rare... even unheard of 'in our neck of the woods'. Nature will find a way, I guess. That goat wasn't afraid of our huge, docile old bucks. He was small and agile and could climb up out of the way onto a roof, a truck, a number of old trees that were around, whatever was around. But frankly, the bucks were so pampered and there were so many ewes, it wasn't ever a problem, that I'm aware. As I said, "Nature finds a way. Even if it's weird, or unheard of... Even if the young is sterile, or unviable. Clearly the hens want nothing to do with these weird babies, judging from the beating that chick has taken. You'll have to watch then closely. Keep us updated as to their health and progress, please.
@MaryAnnNytowl
@MaryAnnNytowl 3 года назад
Well, with all I would like to say (LOL!), I'll just say... some hens just aren't good mamas, no matter whether those babies are hybrids or just normal chicks. ~shrug~ Some hens are great mamas, some aren't, even in the same breed. But Silkies and banty Cochins LOVE to be mamas, LOL! I've got banty Cochins that will want to be broody if two eggs are left in a nest box for more than a few hours! 😄 As for the hybrid "geeps," LOL, yes, nature/life finds a way! 😄❤

They had 3 little babies and I saw them a ton before their chicks hatched. I never saw their eggs, but I did see the babies. They left soon after and didn’t come back, but those two protected their chicks well. No matter how much my little self would try to pet one of them, either the male or female would charge me or make themselves bigger to tell me to stay away.
