I think it was very nice of them but as a daughter in law vey mean of her. If your religion doesn’t allow you to be open minded you shouldn’t follow it. Respect for elders and traditions is sacred. That’s why these ancient cultures are being destroyed by islamism and Christianity. Not cool.

We have a similar situation in my own extended family. My elder son fell in love with a beautiful Korean lady and was initially timid about going to meet her very conservative/traditional parents in Koreatown, Los Angeles. This is where the language connection comes in -- my son studied Japanese as his foreign language in high school, and her father spoke 5 languages, including Japanese. My son and his future father-in-law struck up a conversation in Japanese, and when my future daughter-in-law left the house at the end of the evening, her father confided to her, "I like him." My wife and I are now blessed with two delightful little grandsons, age 4 and 6. Life is good.

Bruh the fact that they went to the catholic church instead of the shinto church just for her is like such a huge deal and just truly shows how accepting they are of her which is amazing honestly
That's wonderful. It actually made me tear up because I know how different both languages are and when someone puts so much effort into learning a totally different language for someone, it's just heart-warming.

I met my in-laws for the first time last year in Yokota. Even with the language barrier, they welcomed me with open arms and have been truly wonderful.
I too am a catholic and married to a Japanese man We are quite a blend both racially and in religion My husband is a buddhist monk Yet I remain strong in my catholic faith I am from Sydney Australia My husbands hometown is Hiroshima We have been married now for 40 years and although I have spent times feeling homesick for my country Our marriage remains strong Our families have been very supportive to us We were very lucky I wish you both the best in everything. I would like to ask a personal question, feel free not to answer, but I'm genuinely intrigued as to how you can hold religious vows when you're of different faiths and strongly religious on top of that? What I mean is, religious mariage, at least in the Abrahamic religions, is a vow before a God. So how does your husband feel about that? Is he true to your god? Or do you just accept that he isn't, being of a different faith? But then, what does that vow and ceremony mean? I get being in love and respecting a vow to one another, but the strong feelings about religion strike me as a hurdle considering the way religious mariage works with a third party (a god) involved.
@@k.v.7681 for me personally, my partner and I, if may have different religion it doesnt stop me from loving her, if it takes me to vow to her god to stay with her I will gladly do so and I know she will do too. Though conflict of religion may seem to be a problem at first, but with real love there will never be that problem
@@Martin-iw1ll You can be a buddhist monk and not be in monastic pursuit or follow all the buddhism paths to liberation. Also, its possible to have buddhism pratictices and be non-religious or follow an other religion; there is no "God" teaching in buddhism (unless you follow a sect).
As an American of Japanese descent, I can say your Japanese is excellent young lady and you'll fit in like a new member of their family. The Japanese are very accepting of those who "marry outside" and your sweet personality and beautiful blonde hair will be loved by all of your new family. Like all proud parents all they want is their new family member to love and cherish them which will most certainly be reciprocated. This is AWESOME!! Congratulations!!!!

How lovely that your in laws were kind enough to share an important family occasion with everyone on film, and how thoughtful it was to include your own faith in the days celebrations. Such courtesy and kindness is not always the case in families and it is genuinely lovely to see the respect and inclusion in both cultures and faith.
I moved to Germany from Ireland and married a German girl. That was 13 years ago and i'm still here but I still remember the culture shock. It took 2 years to learn how to navigate the culture and feel comfortable. I Consider it one of my greatest achievments.
German here who married an American and moved to the USA. I hope you're over the German culture shock and feel at home now. Germany went pretty nuts the last few years because of the pandemic while here in the US we enjoy more freedom again. How do you handle the German grumpiness and lack of customer service? Last time i went back to Germany i had a severe reverse culture shock and noticed many things about our culture there that I don't miss. Hahaha Hope you're doing well!
It looks like his parents were very inviting and you all seem to have a great time. It has to be a huge help that there isn't a language barrier and your fiance isn't having to interpret everything for you. You can form your own relationship with your future in-laws, which is amazing. Also as a fellow Catholic it was beautiful to see that even in Tokyo I would be able to follow the Mass without knowing Japanese. Great Video!
I love getting to see such a personal level of Japanese culture. Amazing how things can be so similar and so different. Eating together with special foods. Saying prayers, sharing embarrassing stories, your parents telling you politely to get your crap off the floor. So nice.

My husband and I have been married 39 years this coming May. He is Japanese and Black. We have enjoyed such a wonderful time together. I tried to raise our 2 young men to learn all about their wonderful heritages. God bless you both on your upcoming marriage.

My sister in law is Japanese and we are British and her and her parents were nothing but incredibly warming to my brother and also our side of the family. At their wedding my sister in law's father did a speech and afterwards did it again in English which we found out he had been practising for months so we felt included.

My (American/British) best friend moved to Tokyo a few years ago and he married a Japanese woman in 2019! I love the juxtaposition of cultures. Even when they celebrate Thanksgiving it has such a cool Japanese vibe and the fusion is so cool to me!

Being married into a Japanese family, I had many of the same worries. My father-in-law was more worried about our financial stability, which I have. So, he didn't mind us getting married. At first whenever we would go to see him, he was very quiet, and serious. I thought he didn't like me for the longest time, but it was because his work life is very stressful. He asked me out to drinks once. As soon as this man got one drink in his system, it was like night and day. He was laughing, smiling, and singing. I don't drink as much as he can, but I still enjoy going out with him.
I remember the first time I visited my girlfriend's parents( I'm iranian and she's italian)... this really shows how people are the same all over the world. Full of love, joy to live and care for each other... keep up the good work! You're doing great.😊🎄🥳

My favorite American - Japanese couple story comes from the early 1970s. She was American, of obvious Irish descent, but born and raised in Japan (Navy brat), and fluent in Japanese. He was American, of Japanese descent, but born and raised as a second-generation Los Angeles native, and not at all fluent in Japanese. When they visited Japan, the locals always tried to talk to him instead her ... . :)

My uncle moved to Japan over 45 years ago, married my Japanese aunt, and raised their son in Tokyo completely English-free. Inspired by my uncle, I studied Japanese throughout college and came *thisclose* to moving there, but my life took a left turn. I *LOVE* watching your videos and vicariously enjoying a glimpse at what my life could have been, as well as getting more insight into the lives my closest relatives live! Also…hearing Mass in Japanese was completely unexpected and so fun.
Breaching the language barrier was HUGE for connecting with the inlaws. It allows your personality to connect with them directly. Congratulations. On another note, in the catholic church, Jan 1 is the solemnity Mass for Holy Mary, Mother of God. As always, you don't need to be in a specific place to pray to God, just do it. @@OrientalPearl yeah, it’s always good to pray for other people. You give thanks for what you have, ask forgiveness for your little desmadres haha, and then make your requests. It’s a wonderful thing. On another note, I also married outside my culture. Both of my in-laws didn’t speak a word of English so understanding the language and culture was critical to connect with them. They were from Mexico. Both are gone now but my mother in law lived with us for 13 years until she passed away at age 85. She told everyone that considered me her son.
@@davidholden4543 What does "desmadres" mean? I'm not a religious person so I don't pray but I sometimes think of my deceased family and how much I owe them. Maybe that counts too.
@@kaltaron1284 Hi Kal. “Desmadres” is a Spanish word that roughly translates to “little disasters.” I live in the southwest US, so some of this Spanish mingles in our everyday conversation. In the praying context, a desmadre would be little sins like being rude or unkind while bigger sins are like robbing a bank or being a mass murderer. Hope this helps.
I have relatives and friends in a mixed language marriage. The fact that you put for the effort to speak his family's language is the greatest blessing. My mom has the hardest time relating and communicating with my sister-in-law, even though my mother understands English, it is a definite barrier to getting actually close to them and having a warm relationship. Good Job and Stay Strong, it is a challenge, but so worth it!
They are so lovely! And on a side note, lived hearing Auld lang Syne in the background. I cry every new year here in Scotland hearing it where it is from. Just brings so much emotion.

Love that they were willing to respect your religion as well. Mutual respect is awe-inspiring. With that said, I was a bit confused about stating, "sorry to bother you" when leaving the parent's home, especially for the New Year.
My mother, a Japanese American, would always stress not bothering others or make them feel obligated in anyway. That and bringing dishonor to the family was highly emphasized.

Japanese homes are so cosy! I love those little tables with the warming underneath and how they are the centre of the room. Seeing a Japanse Catholic church is surreal though.
The little tables (kotatsu) are all good until they're the only source of heat in the room. Japanese houses are often cold and drafty in the winter. Absolutely frigid. 🥶❄️❄️

My sister-in-law is Japanese. I would love to learn Japanese because it’s a beautiful language. I was able to take about a semester before I had to drop classes due to a surgery. But it would be nice to learn to also use it with my sister-in-law and my niece as she gets older! And travel of course

The acoustics in that church! The architecture is different than what I've seen, but still beautiful in a sleek, modern way. I grew up Catholic as well so it warms my heart that your future inlaws brought you to church to worship and pray in your own way on New Years. I am new to your channel and so far enjoying your videos. It was so sweet the interaction between his parents and you. I love how he still acts like a kid sometimes lol. And it was so nice how they accepted you being catholic and taking you to church first before doing their traditional things. I was married with an Indian man but we are separated. His family also treated me like this very loving and took care of me even though they didnt speak english. They're always thinking and asking about me.
It's so neat to see you go through the same thing I have been going through for many years now. (17 years married) I have known and been a part of my in-laws family since 1994 (28 years, WOW) when I first met my wife. Our daughter is now old enough to respect the customs of her maternal family. It is also neat to see her learn the culture. My mother-in-law was born in Japan, my father-in-law is third generation Japanese American. My daughter is able to understand the language a little more than I can and I am no where near your comprehension. Thank you for sharing your experiences!

You would be surprised with Catholicism in Japan. In fact they have a place in Akita where the blessed Virgin Mary was said to have appeared before a Sr Sasagawa. A lot of catholics do not know of it, but it is so important. It is a continuation of Our lady of Fatima where the 'real" third secret of Fatima has been revealed. I am not sure if it has been officially approved but unofficially the person who was looking out over this was one Archbishop Ratzinger before he was a Cardinal and a Pope. When he looked at what was happening he had no problem with the messages given and declared it sound Catholic doctrine.
@@natedill9180 The whole "alcohol is the devil" thing comes from certain branches of Protestantism which are popular in America. There are many things wrong with Catholicism, and religion in general, but saying they're all "no fun allowed" is not accurate. Some of the world's oldest existing breweries were founded by Catholic monasteries, and several are still run by monks.
I hope you continue to have fun with your friends. All things change like seasons but our memories dont fade and when they do it is time for a new season and change.

All though it is a plus to speak the same language, what is most important is that both parties decide to accept each other. Even when the in-laws speak the same language and have the same cultural traditions, if either side is not open or worse dismissive of the other side, issues will arise. Your in-laws are obviously aware that you are not Japanese, but they have accepted you as their sons choice. The fact that you can communicate in their language is a plus, but you are also aware of and honor each others cultural and religious traditions. The very openness displayed in this video, bodes well the future. Probably the weirdest thing to deal with, is you being a RU-vid creator, and videoing your interactions. That is not yet a everyday thing, although it's becoming more of a reality, because technology has improved, so that more people are recording their lives. This was truly a beautiful interaction to view. Many thanks to your in-laws, Tommy, and you for taking us along. An auspicious Year of Tiger has been ordained for Tommy and by extension you.
