Italy’s prison system has long been known for its overcrowding (it has risen by 129% in 2019). Rather than a higher rate of detention - this is due to fewer people being released from prison.
There has also been an increase in prison sentences of less than 3 years handed down.
But attitudes are shifting, and support put in place- there are prison schemes where inmates are learning new skills and begin to contemplate life outside prison.
Rageh Omaar meets the female prisoners in Rome’s Rebibbia prison learning make traditional cheeses and working on the farm.
He visits a Napolean bar where inmates brew beer, visits the shops where their produce is being sold and learns how these schemes are helping change their life.
