For those wondering, the other nocturnal parrot is the night parrot. They are endemic to Australia, where their natural habitat is the spinifex grass which still dominates much of the dry, dusty Australian interior. Because of their unique lifestyle, it is one of the most elusive and mysterious birds in the world, with no confirmed sightings of the bird between 1912 and 1979, leading to speculation that it was extinct. Sightings since 1979 have been extremely rare. It is one of only four ground-dwelling parrots in the whole world, the other three being the closely related Ground parrot (found in Australia), the somewhat closely related Antipodes parakeet (from NZ's Antipodes Islands), and of course the Kākāpō which is unrelated. Also, that clip of Sirocco doing that is so iconic. The fact that other guy is just observing and letting it happen is pure gold. I have seen that hundreds of times and those hundreds of times it made me cry laughing. The commentary by Fry is just god tier; "you are being shagged by a rare parrot" it's just poetic and hilarious at the same time.

Slight correction: The bird you showed at the top left at 0:15 to represent the New Zealand parrots isn't actually a member of the New Zealand parrots or Strigopidae family. That is a baby Malherbe's parakeet (kākāriki karaka) and while they are from New Zealand, they're from the Psittaculidae family which are Old World parrots. That said, the reason the Strigopidae family in NZ are their own thing is they diverged from the other parrots around 82 million years ago when New Zealand broke off from Gondwana, while the ancestors of the genera Nestor and Strigops diverged from each other between 60 and 80 million years ago! Out of the Strigopidae family, the kea are my favorites. They are found only on the South Island (though fossils show they were once found on the North Island too) and are one of, if not the only alpine parrot as they can be found breeding at heights of 1,600 meters (5,200 ft) above sea level and higher! For food, they go after beetle larvae, land snails, other birds, and even go after mammals like sheep and rabbits! Not only that but they are also exceptionally intelligent. Researchers set them a series of intelligence tests based around probabilities and social cues. They found that kea can perform better than monkeys, showing abilities only previously seen in great apes such as humans and chimpanzees!

Whatever they "resurrect" will have a hard time as a functioning wild creature without parents to teach them "how to act"... see the kakapo that liked human heads in the video for an intelligent creature to not be raised by it's own kind. It's like, if some alien race found human DNA and created a human, without a mom or dad to teach it how to interact with the world, the "human" would fail at life without heavy intervention.

You think the Kakapo had a close brush with extinction? Look up the Chatham Island Black Robin. At their darkest hour there were only 5 individuals left, only one of whom (Old Blue) was a female. Today there's over 300 of them, and all are descended from Old Blue. Oddly enough, there's been no recorded problems with inbreeding despite the genetic bottleneck. It's one of the greatest conservation success stories in history.

@darkonyx6995
@darkonyx6995 10 месяцев назад
Tier lists are a really bad way to look at the natural world, simply because real life isn't a videogame. He also placed ratite birds in F tier, which is an incredibly bad take. He also argued that "penguins would go extinct if they had to deal with a land predator", even though PENGUINS ALREADY DEAL WITH LAND PREDATORS, not all penguins are confined in Antarctica, and a lot of species have common encounters with predators such as foxes, cougars, jackals, jaguars, etc, and even the antartic ones have to deal with flying predators like petrels... Also, Kiwis are incredibly hardy and adaptable birds, and they are already adapting to survive against the local invasive cats.

@@darkonyx6995It's also kind of unfair to rank them based on the current ecosystem given they didn't develop for it. Before human arrival, Kākāpō were among the most populous large herbivores on New Zealand, so they were clearly doing something right. Apparently birds of prey and owls (their natural predators) don't have very good smell and so the Kākāpō's strategy of freezing and camouflaging worked pretty well since they didn't have to worry about being smelt out.
