Dave Rossum is one of those people who's influence is easy to miss.
His early involvement in electronic music instrument design started with the E-mu systems modular and quickly developed into the early digital systems where he was a pioneer.
His engineering and design work went on to bring us some real classics that shaped entire genres and generations of music: Emulator Samplers, SP12 and SP1200 being the most well-known.
We caught up with Dave at Superbooth this year and had a great chat.
As well as his own Rossum-Electro.com products, Dave also has a lot of input in other products, also being a technical consultant for Universal Audio amongst other things.

We should all bow the knee to this guy... Where would music be today without him? His influence has been huge. I still lust after and Emulator II but I'll just have to make do with my old ESI4000!

I still have a soft spot for Emu's Proteus 2000 range. The B3 was very well done. Also had the Vintage Pro. That was a nice module. I liked the simplicity of these.....they also had 128 note Polyphony. Mophatt sounds so phatt......I had all of them. The ZR perfect piano was pretty good for the time! Yes they should give up the name and let him have it back. Wouldn't it be fun if they brought out a new Emulator.

Massive E-MU fan, selling my EII was the biggest gear mistake of my life. But he kind of gives the impression he invented sampling, which he didn't. Still, a legend for sure.

That was a great interview thanks! As much as I love Japanese synths- I really miss the innovations companies like E-mu (& Ensoniq) brought to the music tech world. He’s so awesome I can almost forgive him for helping create the tools that lead to abomination that is hip-hop 😁

What an absolute legend indeed. I'd be so happy if he got the E-mu name back. It's really his name, after all. And to my knowledge, at least, the name is not being used anyway, so if Creative still owns it: Give it back, guys. Just sign the name over to Rossum. It's the only decent thing to do for a massive corporation like yours. Didn't Yamaha give Dave Smith back the Sequential name? That only made me think more highly of Yamaha.

Would be so amazing to see a new complete instrument from Dave based on his new Assimil8or, Morpheus and other modules... A sampling workstation, like a SP1200 for the 21st century.

He knows is market better than me.....but I would my two cents ...say why don’t you design a small sampler that is desktop with a keyboard. Not everyone can afford Eurorack and modular.....not a big setup....there aren’t many samplers out there since Microsampler by Korg. I guess there is the 1010 one and Deluge......but none have a keyboard. I’ve got fond memories of Emu rompers and my e4k keyboard. That was like a Rolls Royce. I wish I’d not sold it now for 250 quid!
