The next EVOlution from Ultimaker. 4 years ago this would have been a solid workhorse with state of the art tech. But today it seems like the UM developers took some kind of hiatus in the dev process. No input shaping, no core XY, exotic filament diameter, still the old low flow print cores, no automatic flow calibration, still manual printcore offset calibration. Good luck!

Congratulation to the launch of the new Factor 4! As a longtime Ultimaker S5 user I would like to give a small personal feedback regarding the new printer. What I like: - Finally a Direct Extruder, this is a good decision - Linear Rails, Lightweight gantry wich means better precision and better printquality. This is a very good upgrade, love it - Still using the great swappable printcore design - PEI Coated flexible build plates - Integrated material station (active dehumidifier?) - Auxiliary cooling fans - Better webcam - Actively Heated fully enclosed chamber - Nozzle wiping and parking position What I do not like: - 3mm Filament is outdated and has some annoying properties. Fiber reinforced filaments are extremely stiff and tend to break more easily. Diameter variation is having a larger impact on print quality then 1,75mm filament. 1,75mm filament is way more common nowadays. I am very limited in the filament choice with 3mm. - The Dual Nozzle head is an outdated design, you alteast should have made an IDEX printer with printcores in two seperate printheads. - No active carbon, only HEPA. This decision is just not okay, an HEPA Filter is not enough! VOCs are not removed from the air. - No improvement on the bed leveling method. A better sensor method e.g. Lidar sensor should have been implemented. Very critical especially when printing with soft print surfaces like the P-surface from PPprint. The PP print sheets from Ultimaker are less then poor. - No permanent printing plates for different materials e.g. like a Filaprint surface(should be a must, in this price category). Recommending different print sticks is not enough. - No improvement on the build plate size. Instead of 330x240mm, it should have been 350x350mm - No small heatzone on the build plate (Prusa XL as a reference). When small parts are printed a lot of heat is wasted - The current very small filament spools are still used. 750gram per spool still is a scam. They produce a lot of plastic waste and do not carry enough material. I am using mostly 2,5kg spools on my Ultimaker S5 - It seems your are still not using wear resistant belts with nylon coating (e.g. like Gates Powergrip Belts). This means like on the S5 the belts will wear down fast and will quickly start making noises - Almost no supported filaments for the 0.4mm CC Printcore

What? Still 3mm???
@hayden9944
@hayden9944 5 месяцев назад
Couldn’t agree more! 2.85mm diameter is also more sensitive to extruder errors. Later lines are going to be an issue - so is strength and dimension accuracy No z wobble accommodation? Duel print head might have been ok if mounted properly ( still using silly in-accurate lift switch). Duel print head not having auto x y cal. No bellows covers for z screw? Clogs easy. No covers for gantry - again just going to clog belts and increase noise. My belts get full of plastic dust and need cleaning. Same as lead screw. And yes - no activated carbon is madness.

I remember the good old days, when Ultimaker would advance technology with a huge community. Seemingly, managers have taken over seeking to maximize profit short term. 20k for this is ridiculous. Apparently, the development of this machine began before the advent of the X1C. And they decided to just steam ahead anyways. I work for two companies that rely heavily on 3D printing. One SME with a print farm, the other a large enterprise using Ultimakers in prototyping and production. Both have moved away form Ultimaker towards Bambulab with a year. The factor 4 confirm that decision.

I can't deny the build quality and aesthetics are impressive and my S3 gets the job done, however if/when relying on Ultimaker to supply parts and accessories or product support, including their extortionately priced proprietary NFC filaments and all in one heads outside the US and Canada has become impossible, S3 owners are reduced to buying cheaper independent unofficial filaments, nozzles and spares elsewhere, if like me you live in the UK, or outside their supply chain restrictions. It seems Ultimaker have gotten so paranoid about losing profit, they've essentially locked down their machines and services to a point of being unuseable outside Ultimaker's proprietary Cura software and their equally clunky cloud services at the digital factory website. For one example, since the last firmware update, my S3 will not generate the essential digital factory connection code, regardless of adhering to their procedures and recommendations to the letter. My advice is do not fall for a pretty looking printer, invest in one from a company that doesn't hold it's customers hardware and business literally to ransom. 🤔 This is my opinion, after owning an Ultimaker S3 for six months, but I could be wrong. 😉

Have had both Ultimaker 3 and S5, Ultimaker still insists on milking the Ultimaker 3's reliability as a marketing slogan for the rest of their line up. I see no breakthroughs here, just old tech in a new shiny enclosure. the S5 has been a disaster. The word industrial is just to make you believe the price is justified.

The gantry and direct drive is very welcome. As is the 70C chamber. But I still don’t see an automated method for calibrating xy nozzle offsets. I also don’t see a method to avoid Z wobble. No LiDAR? No accelerometer? They could have made a real beast of a machine but they have settled for average.

Printers are good but... For me the biggest : "No GO" is Cura Slicer. Cura is really the worst slicer in my experience. I never have a good time with it. Why they can't do what everyone else does: a fork of Prusa Slicer to finally offer a pleasant experience. Given the price of the machines, when the software does not keep up it is unacceptable. Yikes, another disappointing announcement from Ultimaker. The S7 was a repackaged S5 with an obnoxious price. This still lacks speed, lacks something as basic and proper as an active carbon filter. What exactly is 'industrial grade'? I am assuming heavy for the sake of being heavy makes it industrial? You can get 8 of the Bambu Lab's X1Es for the price of one of these (each that will print reliably at 4x the speed), and if the extra 20c is super necessary, or the slightly bigger build volume, there are tons of other options for half the price. I would be SHOCKED to see a 95% success rate since the S5 we have has been nothing but problems and rarely gets 2 successful prints in a row. Ultimaker has completely lost their way. After this announcement I have zero faith they are going to be worth while ever again. Too many other companies making actual progress and miles ahead.

I can't think any tangible reason why I'd recommend to anyone, nor invest thousands in another Ultimaker printer, if after only two years from new, my Ultimaker S3 is essentially obsolete, it refuses to connect to the digital factory and to rub salt into open wounds, Ultimaker refuse to supply materials, print heads and accessories outside the US and Canada. Which makes one wonder, how long it will be before the S5 becomes obsolete too, now they've introduced this latest Factor 4 iteration. 🤔

So according to Ultimaker, the reasons you should all be spending $20,000 USD on this machine are as follows: 1) It prints correctly 95% of the time 2) It has lower accuracy (+/-0.2mm) than a Bambu X1 (+/- 0.1mm) 3) It has a direct drive extruder (like an Ender 3) 4) The software has a "new code base" (big selling point!!!!) 5) It has similar heated chamber (but smaller build area) than a Flashforge Creator 4 (but is twice the price). Why would anyone spend 20k USD on this piece of obsolete underspecced crap when you can get an Intamsys Funmat Pro or an Aon3D (both capable of printing ULTEM and PEEK0 for the same price (or less)?
@johnecker

#2 is part dimensional accuracy of a part across the entire build plate in ABS. Not nozzle position accuracy. Meaning, you know the part will be nearly identical to the 3D model.

@@johnecker Pretty sure the Sprites (and later extruders) are direct drive. You might be thinking about the V2 from a few years back. The Ender 3 hasn't had a Bowden as standard for a very long time. You might want to head on over to the Creality site and get yourself up to speed.
