We went to the same church at Mt Calvary when I was a boy growing up in Durham in the '80s. She was a deaconess but then sometimes she delivered the sermon. To hear her speak on some Sunday mornings was mesmerizing. She even held the children's attention. She used no notes or nothing, just spoke from the heart. Can't wait to see the movie. RIP Ms. Ann.

Ms. Atwater was such a great soldier in the army of the Lord. I pray that you are now resting with the angels. There are so many stories untold, the suffering, and struggle that so many of the people of the most high God endured, it all just make you shake your head. I will never understand it. Ms. Atwater you endured hardness as a good soldier. Enjoy your eternal reward. You sure did earn it. The fight continues and still He is our hope. " Our soul waiteth for the Lord: he is our help and our shield. Psalms 33:20". Yes, The Lord still has our back.

We have ALL been miseducated. I find It very interesting how all these amazing black people (we're seeing in movies) are coming to light now that I'm over 60 years old. This info wasn't in our Library Books. These things were not taught in school! We were taught that only white people did exceptional things. We were never taught about what was possible for us.... we were continually led to believe we were nothing but misfits, unproductive, and unfortunate poverty-stricken people that had a world of limitations on us due to our black skin. Ann Atwater was still alive when I graduated in 1976! If my Class had known - we could/would have gone and met her. It makes me want to cry just knowing how all this world of knowledge might have made a monumental difference in our lives if we had only known. Had we known... I dare say we would have embraced a vision with no limits. What an injustice! Now I know why the powers that be did not want us to know that Ann Atwater was indeed a "real" person. It's all about control. If we had known her story we would be like her: Bold and willing to do more in life. THIS IS SADISTIC..... A crying shame.

Who knows, but I really miss STRONG, BRAVE, RESOLUTE, Christian black ladies like Miss Ann who weren't afraid of anyone or anything. Kamilla Harris I am of mixed blood. I have beef discriminated by all race. At one time I hate white because I was raised in an all Mexican community till middle school. Then my parents left the Mexican community and moved to and all white one the segregation came and the black treated me the worse. Beat me up cause I was mixed. Then we moved again all white so my could be closer to his job(he is Mexican). The I went back to the Mexican community and felt racism there. It broke my heart. Through all of this I learned racism and ignorance in every race. After I overcame the bitterness I started to use kindness and patience. Endured several beating. Than God for my big Mexican family. My parents were the best. Now my family is a big rainbow.

She gave up racism to help the community and see a man reached for God. He gave up racism to do the same. Daniel Johnson + I am too. It’s a great piece of history that needs to be told. But it’s still kinda sad that Hollywood chooses the same Black actresses and actors for every role, even if they don’t resemble the person they’re depicting. Gabriel from Empire would’ve been a much closer resemblance to Mrs. Atwater. Or Monique could’ve delivered her fiery personality And with a stronger physical resemblance! Even Queen Latifa would’ve been a great match. Although Oprah is controversial now, casting her in this role could’ve worked too. That Boob hanging body suit and goofy wig on Taraji is distracting from an otherwise amazing story. SMH

I havnt seen the movie yet and although I think Taraji does well with these period piece movies I do agree with the comment that Octavia Spencee would have played the hell out of this part.

Heeeeell no! MONIQUE??! Monique killed her career when she did that God awful movie Precious. I wldve been waiting for her to throw a shoe at somebody and call them a lil bitch.. That movie is why I don't care for Lee Daniels right now. She wld have been a distraction.

My hometown is Durham, NC and my dad grew up during the desegregation of schools. He talks about his experience of being in a predominately white high school all the time and how it made him a better person. Thank you Ann Atwater for what you fought for. I'm glad you are getting the recognition you deserve with this movie

did it make him angry and resentful? I would understand if it did.
@KaiyaTaylor
@KaiyaTaylor 2 года назад
@@xisotopex Honestly, no. I think he is angry now with how the city is currently not listening to Black residents, constantly displacing him, and forcing them to live in public housing because of unlivable wages. He feels we aren't as far as we could be as city even with an almost-all Black city council. They are basically ineffective and doesn't do anything to help the people who made this city as desirable as it is

Love her honesty...name calling on BOTH side's. Realizing young eyes (children) watching for a solution. Thank God for her courage - and the Gift she introduced to an angry man to find the ultimate God. Haven't been to a movie in year's but I'm taking my teen to watch with me this weekend. 😊
