Not only that, but 7 of the last 9 Supporting Actor winners (including the last 5 in a row, counting Rockwell) are ALL first-time nominees. Interestingly, Sam Rockwell is also the ONLY first-time nominee of the bunch in this ceremony (ALL the other 4 nominees have been nominated at least once before).

I would change Mahershala Ali for Michael Shannon and his performance in Nocturnal Animals, even Jeff Bridges in hell or higher water was better

Mehershla winning was a joke. He had five minutes of screen time and a pretty basic performance. How that won over Michael Shannon is beyond me.

@@notsoaveragejoe2039 He had 16 minutes of screen time and he delivered a powerful performance making the absolute most of his character (Unlike Shannon who tried but couldn't quite manage to elevate the material, though I wouldn't blame him, Nocturnal Animal's screenplay it's awful). Also, stay tuned to watch his performance in Green Book. He might blow us all away there.

Oh you are so right! He scared the shit out of me as a kid. I loved this movie when I was young and it took me years to get that psycho crazy image of him out of my head since he left such a big impression on me in this role.

He was pretty good in that movie, but Michael Clarke Duncan was infinitely better than anyone else in the category that year (except maybe Tom Cruise).

True. Janney's is even more surprising to me personally especially since her filmography is actually rather impressive, in spite of the fact that she appears more frequently in television. Don't forget that Janney has appeared in moves like THE HELP, JUNO, AMERICAN BEAUTY, and more. All 3 of them were Best Picture nominees, with AMERICAN BEAUTY even being a Best Picture winner. Interesting side note: Allison Janney is the 6th cast member of THE HELP to win an Oscar. The others who've won are Mary Steenburgen, Sissy Spacek (both won Supporting and Lead Actress Oscars respectively in 1980), Octavia Spencer (who won for THE HELP), Viola Davis, and Emma Stone (they won Supporting and Lead Oscars in 2016 respectively). Also, whenever Octavia Spencer was nominated, she either won or was beaten by her fellow THE HELP cast member (she won on her first nomination, lost her second nod to Viola Davis, and lost her third nomination to Allison Janney).

Don't forget The Green Mile , he should got Nominated for that.

Neelabhra Roy I respectfully disagree. Also, as great as JK Simmons was in WHIPLASH, he was third best of the decade for me (after Rockwell and Jared Leto), and I frankly believe Simmons should have at least tied with Ethan Hawke for BOYHOOD that year (Hawke's character evolves over the course of his movie, and his change is presented in a really believable manner). Interesting Side Note: This marks the 5th year in a row (and the 7th in 9 years) where a first-time nominee won the Supporting Actor category.

Jack Mahanes I kinda felt William Dafoe was better, but that’s just my opinion

Willem Dafoe would've EASILY been my second choice. The Florida Project is an excellent movie, but it's also worth noting it would've been far less interesting without him. Dafoe was the glue that kept that movie together. However, I think Rockwell's performance was trickier to pull off in the way that he did. It's difficult to make a hateful character make you somehow have empathy for him, and then he pulls you around by the end. It's also showier while Dafoe's is subtler. But I will say, Dafoe needs an Oscar very soon! It's way overdue!

@Diego Pisfil Absolutely Three Billboards is better than The Florida Project. The acting, the writing, the direction, and most importantly the pace. The Florida Project has about an hour of great film making, and then gets lost and slow the last 45 minutes. Willem Dafoe is the best aspect of the movie.
