He could also just have Shellshock/Warfare spesific PTSD people suffering from it can randomly (or consistently) get triggered and their old instincts kick in, they also in that moment/PTSD episode believe that they are in active combat, in some cases professionals have literally had to pretend to be commanders giving orders to stand down and that they won or something just to get them to calm down enough so that they can be snapped back there's a lot of coverage on that, war changes people
