MEGA Hurricane Balls - aka Tornado Spheres
I found some 4" ball bearings and I knew I had to make some MEGA hurricane balls! In this video I make several sizes from 1/2" all the way up to 4". I had a few disasters along the way. These toy are both fun and terrifying. Much better than a fidget spinner IMHO.
Thank for watching and I hope you enjoyed!

I'll be your stand-in RPM measuring device, but sorry, no lasers :) I counted spins with the audio on 1/2 playback speed and a stopwatch. At 5:32 there were almost exactly 8 rotations per full speed second, so they hit about 480 RMP. Checking against a second estimation: During that time the balls also make very near to 1 full rotation in 4 frames, which at 30 fps would be 7.5 rps or 450 rpm. Just before the balls flew apart they were making just under 1 full rotation within 3 frames, so they were approaching 600 rpm.

Alternatively, listen to the air at 6:24 to get the number of times the balls were passing the air gun per second....calculate up to rpm

i believe the balance is very important here. The noise from the smaller bearings with the lopsided tack welds causes friction and vibration. If you spot weld them using the balls as the electrodes you'd get a better balanced weld.

Cool. Just a note to offer some help. How to attach the 4" balls together with a piece of threaded rod. You were on the right track. Use a carbide drill to make a hole. Drill and tap a hole in a piece of bar stock the same diameter as the carbide drill. Weld those in the holes in each ball. Screw in the threaded rod with lock-tite and thread the balls tight together. Safer than hot glue which was impressive, by the way. I think you could calculate the rpm using a high-speed camera.
@Makebuildmodify
@Makebuildmodify 6 лет назад
I'm glad I didn't drill them because I want to use them for another project anyway.
@MrToolmaker23
@MrToolmaker23 6 лет назад
Make Build Modify Fair enough. I suspect they cost a fair bit so the hot glue was definitely the answer. Unless the four inch spheres as hurricane balls was the ultimate goal, no sense drilling them out. Good luck with your next project.

is there a reason why you are spinning them up on a breakable surface? seems to me there should be some other surface thats smooth or flat enough to allow them to spin well without accidentally breaking. Also I wonder if epoxy would have held better than the hot glue. Although the hot glue held incredible well considering. :)
@Makebuildmodify
@Makebuildmodify 7 лет назад
I tried metal surface and it had a lot more friction. I think a granite slab would have worked but I had the mirrors so I used them. I agree that epoxy would have worked better. Especially if I had roughed up the surface a little. But I wanted to reuse them so I went with hot glue.
