I've been looking to expand the amount of British locomotives in my collection for a while now and I managed to find a lot on eBay which had most of what I wanted. I wasn't sure if any of these vintage locomotives would even start but it seems we've got a few promising ones. I suspect some haven't run in over 25 years so they're gonna need some work.

The southern region locomotive named Sir Dinadan is actually a N15 Daniel, the N15 and S15 are very similar looking locomotives and as a result people do get them mixed up a lot of the time, the best way to remember it is the S15 has smaller driving wheels than the N15 because the S15 is a freight locomotive, think of it as S15 (small), N15 (normal).

As a OO modeller from Aus, I might be able to help identify these for you. I really liked the video. Based on the image at 11:10 (Left to right and top to bottom): Top Row- Hornby tender drive Black Five/ 5MT from the 70s, matched with a 60s Triang B12 tender; Triang Hornby class 08 shunter bodyshell, looks 70s or 80s; Triang Blue Pullman dummy power car, 60s; 2nd Row- Triang 2-6-2T 3MT tank, 60s; Hornby Intercity 125; Hornby class 29 bodyshell, 70s, the Bo-Bo motor bogie in row 6 goes with it; 3rd Row- Airfix Castle, 80s, looks renumbered/renamed; Lima class 52 Western, looks repainted/renamed/renumbered, 80s; Triang Co-Co power bogie- suitable for class 31, 37 or EM2; Row 4- Kit made (?) NBR Atlantic, know little about it, but it uses a Triang princess chassis; Mainline warship class 42 bodyshell, 80s; Row 5- Hornby 57xx pannier tank (8750 subclass), 70s/80s, mint but looks to have missing buffers and chimney cap; the matching Hornby Intercity 125; Hornby 'Sir Dinadan' with matching tender, 70s; Row 6- Triang Hornby class 31 (Co-Co power bogie could be source of spares), 70s; Triang 'Princess Victoria', 60s, the tender is a later 70s Mainline/Airfix one from the Royal Scot, its matching tender is actually the middle one from the 5 spare tenders; Bo-Bo bogie for class 29; Bottom Row- Triang Maroon princess and tender, looks like the loco was repainted to match the tender, 60s, would've been 'Princess Royal' in maroon; Triang black Princess Elizabeth with tender, these have been partially repainted with the red lining, but it looks ok, 60s. Also, the spare tenders are (from left to right): Hornby Dublo A4 tender (repainted green), 40s-60s; Hornby Railways Princess tender in LMS maroon, 70s, Triang Princess tender, 60s; Triang GWR tender, matches 'Lord of the Isles', 60s; a Triang B12 tender, repainted.

1:28 that's the body for a BR standard 3MT tank engine 2:28 North British Type 2, also called the class 21 3:10 that is an N15 class that had the name "Sir Dinadan" 3:53 the "Westerns" are cool diesel-hydraulic locomotives. They all had 'Western' in their name and worked on the former GWR lines 4:43 Airfix was a separate company hence why you see pre-built model trains with their name. This engine is a Great Western 4000 class which were also known as "Star class" 5:18 these little diesels are the Class 08, and they have rodded wheels like a steam engine 6:16 a GWR 57xx pannier tank! The most iconic GWR tank engine with over 800 built 7:45 that does look like a custom-made engine, a north British H class It seems like tenders for British locomotives are more common than the locomotives themselves. I have two British tenders (one Tri-ang, one Bachmann from the Flying Scot set) but no locomotive

Those Inner City 125 ( HST ) were introduced in Britain in the early 1970's and were very successful for British Rail. They went up against another design called an APT. APT was a tilting train to ease the transition on curves at speed.

The HST didn't go up against the APT it was designed as a stop gap while the APT was doing developed. . But it turned out to be more successful than the APT. . The red one or maroon is a class 52 western diesel hydraulic.

@@williammcgeehan3424 that's a bit of a miss noma. The press were very anti British Rail and had been filled with free booze before that fateful test run. So obviously they all felt a bit sick. Tha APT was basically doomed from the start. The press hated BR and the government didn't want to pay for it. The technology was later refined and used on the pendolino tilting trains ..

Very cool lot/video! As I live in the UK, I always enjoy seeing your Canadian/US locos (I have very little knowledge of them!) so was a treat to see you open things I know a bit better. At 5:35 is a Triang Blue Pullman, very desirable models even now! What you have looks to be the dummy car as the wheels are all plastic. The power car has a motor on the front bogie with metal wheels (plastic on the rear), otherwise it looks the same as the dummy. You should be able to find a power car reasonably cheaply but the coaches are a different matter entirely. They tend to fetch pretty high prices. Well worth the spend though, they look fantastic running. Not bad going for a 60+ year old model. The real sets carried either 4 or 6 coaches in between the power cars. 3:30 is Hornby R154 (called the King Arthur class loco, they all have names of King Arthur's Knights, this one is Sir Dinadan) a superb runner when serviced. Won't identify any more here as this comment will become War and Peace but enjoy the new locos! Toby

I have to say what an amazing haul and I'd be lying if I wasn't a bit jealous. I'm always on the lookout for Bitish stock this side of teh pond and have only to this date managed to acquire to locomotives, A Triang Flying Scotsman and a Triang M7. Here is what I believe everything is. 1:55 - Triang LMS "Princess", this engine is rather special in that it was the first mass produced plastic OO gauge steam locomotive in the UK. The chassis of the first run was much different but the body is more or less the same. 1:31 - Shell of a Triang BR Standard Class 3 Tank Engine. 2:32 2:51 - Mainline Class 42 "Warship". 3:15 - Triang Southern Railway N15 "King Arthur" Class. 3:51 - Lima BR Class 52 "Western" 4:34 - Airfix Great Western Railway 6000 "King Class". 5:20 - Shell of a Triang BR Class 08. 5:39 - Triang Blue Pullman DMU Dummy Car 6:00 - Hornby Ringfield motor bogie for a diesel. 6:09 - Tender for a Triang LNER B12. 6:19 - Triang GWR 57xx Pannier Tank Engine 6:44 - The top tender is a kitbash/ custom and the bottom is the tender for a Triang GWR 3031 Class, specifically "Lord of the Isles" No. 3046. 7:12 - Another Triang Princess. 7:31 - Another Triang Princess 7:52 - A custom model, of what I believe to be an NBR Atlantic, the tender from 6:44 goes with it. 8:14 - A Hornby LMS Black 5, this particular model is tender driven. 8:45 - The power bogie of a Triang diesel. 9:07 - Triang Class 9:35 - Hornby Intercity 125 11:31-You actually got pretty to matching the tender with their locomotives, The only one you got wrong is the Princess in teh 2nd row should have the BR Lined Black Tender (it says British Railways on the tender and has red and white lining).

Ebay: here's an auction lot of parts locomotives. Harrison: challenge accepted. Harrison a lot of those freewheeling steamers are built as that with the power unit in the tender. Had a fellow from across the pond in our model railroad club in the 80s that ran a lot of British stock and also a long time friend that ran a lot of Thomas stuff for the kids at shows. Still get a laugh about the time at a show where Gordon the bigger engine derailed and was shoved up the up the platform of a depot snuffing out several HO scale lives in the process while the tender and train continued on it's merry way oblivious to the scale carnage it left in it's wake

I had one of those GWR pannier tanks, I sold it a few months ago. I paid next to nothing for it, and got it running great, but I just never used it much and I didn't have anything for it to pull. In the end I put it up for sale online (it had the original box and papers) expecting to receive an offer or two... and then shortly after listing, somebody bought it for the list price! I think I had it performing as good as it was ever going to get, reasonably smooth for the sort of drive it had, and as quiet as I could get it. Another reason I could justify parting with it was that while it could manage 18" radius curves, it didn't particularly like them and you could see it slow down a little while it squeezed through them. I hope it's new owner is having a lot of fun with it, and I hope you get yours running! It was very simple inside, very similar to the drives in Mantua steam locomotives but less smooth and quiet. Iirc mine had a 3 pole motor.

Nice haul! The Lima Class 52 “Western” and the Class 42 “Warship” (also looks to be a Lima model) are diesel hydraulic locos rather than diesel electric. The Class 42 owes a lot to the Deutsche Bundesbahn (German Federal Railways) V200. The Airfix loco was made for them by Kadar in Hong Kong, who also manufactured models for Bachmann in the ‘70s and ‘80s, and made the Mainline series for UK toy company Palitoy. Great haul, btw.

The Airfix ready to run models were made by Sanda Kan, with some made by Cheong Tak. When they changed the name to GMR they were phasing in UK manufacture. According to Pat Hammond it was only the Wild West set that was made by Kader, that's because they made it originally for Bachmann who Airfix then bought sets from to sell in the UK market.

Not only did (“Air-Fix”) make model trains, they also made model planes, model cars, and model boats as well as the ever popular and famous at one time visible V-8, as well as some of the finely 1/72 Military and Armor ! So far, what I’ve seen is all Hornby, Air-Fix, Lima, or Trix ! Most of original Märklín is 3 Rails like Lionel ! All OO/HO !! The advantages that you have are that (“American HO”) is 1/87 scale, while British- OO is 1/72 Scale ! Still close enough to work together ! Interesting fact; In 1940 Lionel also had OO GAUGE BUT @ 1/76 scale ! The corridor on the old original NCIS; Doc “Ducike” had a locomotive above his desk if you remember ever watching the show ??? 🌊🐺

Just a heads up, some of those engines with the tenders that have the axles sticking through the plastic are triang models, they have thicker wheel flanges meaning that they may tend to derail on modern track. I could be wrong on that bc I believe they may have changed it up later on, but it is something to be wary of, and the green diesel shell isn’t compatible with the spare bogey you have

As much as I love that model, there is a charm to the old Triang Princess Royals (which you have 3 of). Hope you can get those riding the rails again! That extra Great Western tender appears to be from a Triang Lord of the Isles. If you can find the loco for it, it is a gorgeous one.

That "spare" two-axle bogie with the gears missing appears to be a spare from an IC125, as it has no coupling hook and has the cylindrical bits the same as the two IC125 cars. At a guess, a previous owner was trying to modify a front draw hook for one of those power cars, as they've cut into the lower nose. This was used whenever a set suffered a failure, as it allowed another locomotive to attach and 'drag' the IC125.

Just to throw a kink in the rails some of those British diesels are actually diesel hydraulic, which in the US was limited to the Krauss-Maffei units owned by Southern Pacific. Like a giant automatic transmission. Fun show!

Very cool lot! I can give you some info on some of those locomotives: The great western Tank engine is a 57XX The Blue Great Western 4-6-0 is either a King or a Castle class The Southern 4-6-0 is an N15 The three 4-6-2s are all LMS Princess Class locomotives These are just rough guesses based on visual analysis, but I hope that helps you with identifying some of them!

Thats cool the green locomotive you pulled out near the beginning had blind driver wheels in the middle. Thats a detail alot og model companies dont do. A blind driver is a driver wheel that doesn't have the flange on the back side of the wheel. Blind drivers are actually milled with the center of the wheel that contacts the track in the center as the highest point. Think of the profile of an inflated bicycle tire. Theres a channel i watch with a guy who is a real world railroad singal engineer and also works a the Colorado RR museum. He does 101 video about all thing mechanical about trains. He did a video on blind drivers.

Hey Harrison. What interesting buys from England in HO scale. Wow 2 of those engines i was concerned. 🤣🤣I am sorry Harrison i didn't see the smoke come out of the High speed train i have a medium sized screen on my phone when i watch all my videos. I didn't expect that poor diesel smoke i could tell with your voice then the steam engine my goodness. 😳😵 The high speed train i am familiar with. LIMA came out with this in the 1980's & 1990's I saw it in the catalogs like you i wanted one for years please hope you csn fix it. Also Charlie at CHADWICKS MODEL RAILWAY had featured this in his collection. I was cheering when one of your steam engine took off on the layout then derailed .Maybe that should be in outtakes. 😄As for AIR FIX trains a rarity. I know this. I price so many of them where i work. They're mostly AIRPLANES , MILITARY TANKS, AIR PLANES BOATS & SHIPS, & model cars most kits come with some paints. AIR FIX is part of HORNBY they also make CORGI as well that steam engine & tender is a gem treasure it. Always my pleasure to watch looking forward to seeing future videos. 💡I had brainstorm : Why not in a series in parts we all can learn & enjoy that . Good purchases risky but i know you can rebuild & modify them even better. Harold A CN / BC RAIL/ CPRR fan as well.

Some of the tenders are duplicates, as the 4 Railway companies merged in 1948. It was the tender that often had the change of company, from LMS to British Railways. The only other change was to the locomotive number. The Warship class was a Western Region, Diesel Hydraulic locomotive. The Western Region was before 1948 the GWR. All of the other regions went for Diesel Electric, but the Western Region preferred the hydraulic locomotives. Every depot had a Class 08 shunter, and you would stand on a main station platform, like Chester, or Crewe, and you would see at least one of them, either in a siding, or in use. There were many different Railway companies before the merger of 1925. One of these would have been the North British Railway. Others were the London and North West railway, the Great Junction Railway, London Dover and Chatham Railway, and many other smaller companies. These all merged to form the big 4, which were the:- The Great Western Railway. The Southern Railway. The London and North Eastern Railway, The London Midland and Scottish Railway. Apart from the Southern Railway, all of the big four were know by their initials. Hence the GWR, LNER, and the LMS.
