Mega Man Franchise Retrospective: • Mega Man Franchise Ret...
I'm playing every Mega Man game (except the RPGs). This video is a Mega Man 2 Retrospective. The supposed best game released in 1988. I hope you enjoy the video!

This I agree with. No one understands this game because they play on easy mode, but Capcom called it normal mode.

18:19 - I figured you'd mention that there's no additional enemies between the two boss doors in 2, btw. That shocked me when I first went to play MM1 after playing MM3

28:38 - "I don't know why people online think it's a good idea to tell people to go through difficult mode first." It's because the people who are telling you that are the type of people who fall into that soyjack mean of "Place. Place, Japan." where everything from Japan is instantly better to them. So, since difficult mode is the only version in the Japanese version they'll tell you to play that mode. Ok, maybe not all of them, the others are probably the other type of mega man players who are fanatics about it, stuck through the series through all the bad times, and typically play the entire games through with the default lemon blaster all the time.

8:00 - Yup, that's it. Kids loved that saw blade. :D No one played this on difficult in 1988. No one. I remember hearing the word of mouth for the game back then but I never had it myself. My first game was 3 and then I bought 1 later because I was able to get it for $20 new.

I think with most older games, even popular ones people love like Sonic, Mega Man, & Castlevania, have a lot of bullshit difficulty, not just the game being hard, but unfair things like enemies coming out of nowhere, trial and error sections, precise platforming with knockback and slippery controls, etc. But the fans have played these games so much they get good at it and know how to get past the bullshit.
@NintenDeen
@NintenDeen Месяц назад
Agreed. It's all about learning the BS and perfecting it. Difference is that was how all games were made so it was the norm, not so much what is expected of gamers anymore. Whether or not that is a good thing is up to each individual I suppose
@joser.4494
@joser.4494 Месяц назад
@@NintenDeen Yeah I think the way we experience games is very different now. Games started in the arcade, and you expected BS cuz it’s how the game gobbled up your quarters, and a lot of early console games were inspired by arcade games, like Pac Land inspiring Super Mario Bros. Games were much shorter and more expensive than today so they had to give you your money’s worth somehow, like making you start the game over after every game over and making you feel accomplished when you finally beat it.

0:25 - Lol, hold up, wait a minute. I told you in the last video that Difficult was the /only/ difficulty in the JP version and they added "normal" for the US release. Like they realized the difficulty was too hard and used the US release to release a patch. And that from 3 onward both versions had the same difficulty again. I definitely didn't say it was what was meant for us to play. :D I think they over-compensated a bit with their patch, but I don't think I'd play on Difficult either. :D

I'm proud to say I finished Mega Man 2 through 8 on original PlayStation. Ah, youth. 😎
@Furluge
@Furluge Месяц назад
6:25 - No, that didn't happen to me. We didn't have RU-vid in 1988. Also I didn't even have a NES yet. :D
@Furluge
@Furluge Месяц назад
26:31 - Yeah most people who played the game back then would not finish the game. It was not really common to finish a game and reach the end screen in games for kids playing NES back in the day. And most certainly wouldn't expect to finish it in a 3-4 hour stretch all in one go. A lot of the time people would get tired in the later levels and stop playing or give up in the final stages. And yes since so many games were platforms, and quite difficult the player base eventually got really good a these kinds of games. Case and point, Donkey Kong Country 1, which is often regarded as being a difficult plat former. I got it for Christmas 1994 and I finished it in time for dinner at my Grandparent's house and it made me hate the series from then on for being too easy and it always marked a turning point for me in video game history for when game design started to get much easier in general. So yeah if you're going to play these old games you have to go into them with the mindset that the game wasn't created to be a nice happy fun experience, but instead it's you vs the dreaded "Computer" and you have to do any and everything you can and use every dirty trick to snatch a victory from it. :D

I randomly learned that mega man 2 was more successful due to it getting an entire nintendo power issue, while 1 never got one. Had nothing really to do with box art or difficulty.

I played MM2 around the time it was released in the west. Even as a kid, I thought Boobeam Trap (the boss that can only be beaten with the Crash Bombs) was BS game design. I still do to this day and it irks me to see fans and critics overlook such glaringly obvious flaws.
@NintenDeen
@NintenDeen Месяц назад
The thing is if you play these games 10-15+ times (which I imagine most fans of these classic games have) them realistically you probably only experienced this crap once and maybe twice. So it's hard to fault people for overlooking it, but for a first time experience it shouldn't be ignored. Hence why I (somewhat comically) made a big deal about it

I agree a lot with your take on the Purple stage nothing about that stage is good another cool thing I noticed was that in woodman is you use the flash power before entering the screen with the dogs they won’t spawn

It's interesting how different the perception was back in the day VS now with people uploading speedruns etc and talking about how easy it is. Back then, I knew only one guy who had gotten past all robot masters let alone beat the game. We basically only played to see how far we could get but knew we'd eventually get our asses kicked. We absolutely loved to try though and didn't even see anything as bs tbh. I played another game with my neighbour; he told me he had played that one for months but had still not beaten the first level. It sounded odd but I couldn't figure it out either. We still thought it was a pretty cool game from what we could tell. 😂 Another example is how nobody I knew had been able to beat Mario 3. That one took years of on and off play to finish. Made it all the more epic though. Now with games like MM2 you look it up and see people glitching and sliding through walls, teleporting all over the place and beat the game in minutes. Crazy times. 😂

Definitely a different world lol. Didn't even know it was possible to get past the second stage in Lion King SNES until I was adult

I mean I finished the first 4 on a original NES. Back before we had dial up in my house. You don't need any tricks or guides for these games. You just need time, effort and a bit of luck.
@NintenDeen
@NintenDeen Месяц назад
I get that, doesn't mean they're not hard games lol. Also I find games that I played a ton as a kid to be easy while newcomers now find them absurdly difficult. I'm assuming the gaming community's tolerance has shifted due to the easy access of so many more games 🤷🏻‍♂️

beaten this game twice, US "Difficult" because i would not take capcom's lies about this being difficult, and JP. if you beat this game on "Normal" which is actually the added EASY mode...that's cool. never forget that gaming is supposed to be fun first (and frustrating second). Difficult mode evens the playing field a little bit once you get metal blade. one of the RetroAchievements is to get to the end of Quick Man's stage without Time Stopper, and another is getting to the end of Heat Man's stage without Item-2...AND I HAVE BOTH buebeam trap is ass. even the most hardened rockman 2 diehards won't defend this. fuck "annoying to new players" i've beaten this game on hard mode twice and i would happily skip this if i could.

I thought I was crazy when I found this game to be hard on my first playthrough so I see where you’re coming from. That said, I recommended this game to one of my friends who had never played a mega man game before, and they played it on difficult mode. You know what they said after they beat it? They said it wasn’t that bad difficulty wise!!! I’m glad to hear that I’m not crazy. Edit: 21:13 wtf is this

Yeah, I figured as much, these are NES games so they are inheritably hard. I'm playing the Game Boy games on NSO this week and I been struggling on them.

How did you feel about Mega Man II (GB)? I found that one to be surprisingly really easy compared to the others.
@NintenDeen
@NintenDeen Месяц назад
Honestly, the NES games get better on repeat playthroughs, specifically the first 2 NES games when you learn to maneuver around the beginner's traps. As far as Game Boy games go, I thought 1 and 2 were fine (if anything 2 is way too easy tbh), but omg 3 on Gameboy was frustrating. That might be my recency bias talking because I'm currently working on that script, but wow was it annoying. I hear the games get better when we get to IV so hopefully that's a better experience.

I would argue the Gameboy games are kinda bullshit and this is coming from someone who thinks Castlevania III and Ninja Gaiden are too easy.
