This theme is really underrated by the fans, because of Wily Fortress 1. Wily Fortress 1 is supposed to get you hyped up for the final stages, Wily Fortress 2 is supposed to literally, let the play know that, the end is near. All the weapons that you got, all the deaths that you had, all the close calls that you had, were all built up to THIS very point. Go on, and get that mad scientist!
I like how this song is just a 4-bar phrase that shifts up a semitone every cycle, and Glissandos all the way back down after going up a full octave. It does a great job of giving a sense of rising tension and urgency with the occasional release.
I love this theme. It has that sense of urgency to it. Some people say it's repetitive. I dig how the notes keep getting progressively higher until eventually looping back around.
Sigh, this gives me mixed feelings. On October 23rd, 2010 that morning, my step grandfather suffered a massive heart attack, and I just happened to be playing this game, and the music has a melancholic sound to it of sadness. He passed away the following morning at 71. RIP 1939-2010
I'm glad to be in a comment area where people appreciate great music like this. The makers of Mega Man 10 apparently like this piece since "Stairway to Darkness" is an homage to this song.
someone should 'remix' this song into a Shepard tone i.e. the tone keeps increasing infinitely because it blends the lower octave in rather than loop back to the first note
One of, if not the most underrated song in gaming. I love how it plays the same melody, but it's raised by one key every time, which imo is rather creative. Not to mention it builds tension as you go further and further into Wily's house. In fact I might even go a far as to say I listen to this more than the Wily stages 1/2 theme(I can hear an angry mob in the distance XD)
this song is so interesting it just keeps going up a half step until it goes through every key I keep expecting it to do something different, but it just keeps going up by a half step over & over
well similar to how a decending chromatic sequence typically communicates a hopeless situation, acending sequences like this build anticipation and tension. one of my favorites by this composer.
i can't say i remember the level but the moment that synth starts at the song i can almost feel my childhood anguish in my chest lol had to be a tough level that took me a lot of turns
In the file corruptor I wrote, I was able to get the bass channel of this song to play in place of the bass channel of the boss intro in one of my corruptions just now. It was amazing stuff.
Everyone overshadows this theme because of Wily Stage 1, which left this song to not be loved as much, even though it should be, Wily 1 is to make you feel hyped about being so close to Wily, but this song tells you that the end is near.
When I hear this I instantly have flashbacks to those spike rooms and having sweat all over my hands trying to make jumps where you die instantly if you mess up. It was stressful. No saves.
So this is where the WWE got the inspiration for the former WWE Cruiserweight Champion TJ Perkins wrestling theme sans 2016!!!!!!! His entrance video was off the chain, a human video game come to life! TJP!
This theme is the biggest casualty of Wily 1 existing. Too bad, since it's a pretty good one, but just try finding an arrange of this one buried among dozens of "Wily Stage 1" arrangements.
Very interesting that the music plays the same sequence and it escalates a half step every time until you get through all the keys, then it slides back down.
*Dr. Wily Teleport System 2000* Only available if you've defeated the Boobeam Trap boss (why did Capcom name this? :))) Just don't run out of Crash Bombs, dammit...
The only dud in this game's soundtrack, in my opinion. Appropriately, it also plays at the point of the game where the gameplay starts faltering, too. This theme is associated with enemies that shoot at you in tight corridors so you can't avoid them, the Boobeam Trap that requires full Crash Bomb energy and having to navigate some of the worst sprite flicker in the series, and leading up to possibly the most unfair Wily Machine fight EVER.
