This fantastic fan port of the SNES classic Mega Man X is a sight to behold! It is noticeably harder than the SNES version, has less slowdown. Here's hoping the developer finishes this project!
These are three .bin rom files. Each one is 1647kb in size.
Gameplay is captured on the Analogue MEGA Sg. I have enabled one of the Mega Sg's graphics smoothing filters for this recording. It's my preference.
Filter aside, in my opinion the Mega Sg is the best way to play Sega Genesis games in HD.

@@fairgamer10 The SNES version of Sparkster would be interesting. It was great that back then a lot of the time the SNES and Genesis versions were entirely different games but with the same title. To see fan ports of these games from SNES to Genesis and vice versa is always interesting :D There's a a fan port of Sonic to the SNES which I would like to check out.

@@TailsOfSaturn I love the snes but don't like it when fans lord it over genesis fans with games that have enhancement chips ... So maybe if we get one of these ported that would be a testament to the greatness of the genesis hardware

@@fairgamer10 The Genesis is a powerful machine. It outputs at a higher resolution than the SNES and it has better 3D rendering capabilities.

@@TailsOfSaturn yeah the machine has higher resolution and processing speed. That's how there are starfox and f-zero demos without helper chips or mode7. However there are limits, like for example the aforementioned demos don't have full gameplay

Capcom put their biggest projects on the SNES/SFC for a reason, in Japan the SFC sold more, and those games were ported here. The US and Japan were two of Nintendo's biggest markets, and most profitable, so Capcom put more effort where the money was flowing from. A lot of people don't think about the money thing when they complain about the Capcom developed efforts for the Genesis (I have seen my fair share of complaints from Sega fans about Capcom on the Genesis, they made up for that on the Saturn though).

What interests me about this version is the extra difficulty, don't know if it's something the developer actively implemented or a result of the porting process but I notice how some things are slightly changed (i.e. more enemies spawning on screen that there used to be, some jumps requiring more accuracy) which would actually make an interesting challenge. Also it's impressive how the dev managed to translate the color palette of the original without significant losses in color and no noticeable dithering, makes me wonder just what was Capcom doing with their SF2 port lol

I agree, it really is a sight to behold. I like the upped difficultly. Mega Man X doesn't have difficulty options so this gives me an idea of how a hard or medium hard mode could have been. I wonder if this will ever be finished?

Didn't this same dev recolor SF2 on Genesis? Regardless there is a color patch for that game now (and voice patch).

I hope the person behind this port finishes it one day. Own the SNES version as well as the X Legacy Collection and Irregular Hunter X myself but still, it'd be fun to play the entirety of MegaMan X on the MegaDrive.

You may want to look into CRT filters. They're much prettier than the general post-processing filters, which typically make games look like someone drew onto them with marker.

Thank you, the mega sg has scanlines options to make games look a bit closer to that crt look. I won't be using the smoothing filter for future mega sg uploads.

It has additional sound effects and also there is no slowdown in areas where there is on the SNES. In terms of sounds and looks I'd say it's just down to personal preference.

The sound effects can leave someone with bleeding ears, no thanks. Hope it's something they can fix if they ever decide to finish the port. As for the music, it is OK, but lacks the punch that the SNES version has. Perhaps it can be tweaked a bit more as well. Also the added sound effects and voices, remember, it is a fan game, and not an official one, so the developer is free to add their own spin on the game, even if it isn't necessary to begin with.

As a curious fact, I can tell you that the Snes version sometimes had a rather strange sound that was not heard at all clearly, even opaque. Maybe you're not made to appreciate good art xD

People have this mentality and expectation that because it's an SNES game it must automatically have 256 colors on screen. In reality, even super late SNES exclusives don't push more than 120 on screen colors. This includes games like Chrono Trigger and MegaMan X3.

@@trevorlestat971 Some absolutely push more than 120 colours, and sometimes hundreds more, especially once colour math comes into play for proper transparency. DKC hits over a thousand colours in one area.

The more capable main CPU in the Genesis seems to be in good effect here, there were moments of slowdown here and there in the original that don't seem to be present here.

I have heard nothing in ages on this fan port, did development stop on it? If so, that sucks as I was looking forward to playing it. Oh and I'd love to see something from the Genesis ported to the SNES, like Alisia Dragoon, or Monster World IV. To those who say the SNES couldn't do them, take a look at the speed fixes SNES games are getting, hackers fixing the programming mistakes, with better programming tools than those programmers had access to, you'll see how those fixes have helped make the games run much, much better.

Thanks for your comment. Yeah there hasn't been much news from the developer. It could be that this and the SNES Sonic port are just a showcase and were never inended to become full ports. It would be great if they get finished one day. But I can also appreciate that it must take a long time and life can be very busy. I'm very grateful for what the developer has done so far. Also, interesting what you've said about the SNES speed fixes being released. I will check these out, I'm a fan of the SNES but have so far only uploaded two games.

I am not fully sure about that. So far I could find out, most independent devs don't work with the SNES because of some of its technical limitations and difficulty to program on it. I think even those hacks for Gradius 3 and Super Ghouls n Ghosts took a bit because of how tricky it was to implement that special chip (the SA1?) on those game's code.

Eu vi a pouco tempo uma possibilidade do mega executar 512 cores por meio de um chip especial. Era do o que faltava , velocidade do genesis+ mais cores do snes+fãs desenvolvendo pro genesis ,Console perfeito

@@TailsOfSaturn Oh i sure hope he does. Knowing that MMX was one of the games that made the SNES a great console for its time, seeing a full MMX1 game on the Genesis/Megadrive would be GLORIOUS! (Just as long as Capcom doesn't get Involved by C&Ding it.)

It's fantastic, what these developers do is incredible for the retro community. It can't be an easy task to singlehandedly port a game from snes to genesis and vice versa.

The genesis one has better details, sound effects from the ps1 games in the franchise (x4,x5 and x6) and is faster. On the SNES, the part where the bee falls has an absurd slowdown

Cool as it is, putting this on Genesis is not a huge task imo. It's a game that usually only uses two background layers with simple full screen scrolling (rarely is any row/line scrolling used in the backgrounds), the HUD is done with sprites, there's no fancy transparency or Mode 7 (not shown here at least), it's all bold chunky colours, etc. It could have been a Genesis game all along. Other than probably using more and/or better colours that the Genesis has, it's nothing mind blowing on a technical level on SNES in the first place. It's just a really fun game to play with great sprites and lovely use of colour. So, yeah, cool to see but not particularly impressive to me. Getting Sonic on SNES and nigh-identical to how it looks and moves and plays on Genesis is a much more impressive feat.

Thank you for your comment. It was the same developer who did this that ported Sonic to the SNES. Do you know how to code for the SNES and Genesis? From my point of view as a non coder both are incredible for their accuracy. But it is true that the Genesis has almost double the processing power as the SNES. Optimisation would have take a good while I think.

@@TailsOfSaturn I don't know how to program on either console directly in Assembly, although I can code in general in C, but a bit about how all the sprites and backgrounds and some of the other stuff is done. In this case, the developer probably literally copied and pasted most of the tile and sprite art to the Genesis directly and then just messed around with the colours a bit to make it work within the Genesis' lower colours. But that's just the art. Obviously, getting the gameplay in there is the biggest feat, and he did a great job of nailing it from what I can see. That stuff isn't so hard for good programmers though, especially with a more typical platformer like this (doesn't have any of the complex "physics" of say Sonic for example), if you have a source to base everything on already.

@@TailsOfSaturn The SNES made up for it with a strong GPU. A lot of developers had a tough time making games for the console (much like the Saturn was a bitch to program for), and their inexperience showed, that and some didn't bother using FastROM carts, opting instead for something slower. Look at how fast the SNES could move sprites in Sparkster on the SNES, it could be done, but the programmer had to know what they were doing.

You can, see the chill penguin fight in which I charge and dash wall jump. I used the six button controller to do this. Admittedly this would be much more difficult with the three button controller.

@@AYANAMlREl on the 6 button genesis controller you can use y to shoot, b to jump and c to dash. The button layout if used like this is similar to the snes controller. It's not as comfortable, but it's certainly functional enough. When I played mmx on the snes I would use both my thumb and index finger to charge, hold down a and dash jump off a wall. I was able to use the same technique on the genesis 6 button controller.

@@AYANAMlREl I understand. In the snes originals the shoulder buttons were used to switch weapon. You still have to press A to dash. Funnily enough, when I played Mega Man Zero on GBA I found it difficult to get used to dashing with the shoulder button. I was used to dashing with A from the SNES games.

I'd say no, but it is a rather nice effort, and a chance to perhaps one day play it on another console. That was the great thing about the 16 bit consoles, unlike today's consoles which all seem the same, the SNES and Genesis were like night and day. I just hope the person or persons working on this actually finish the damned thing. I want to play the entire thing.

The reason is because the resolution of Genesis is hight than SNES , this is clearly a Port that smooth the pixels in order to make it "larger" to fit right the megadrive resolution. Better would be respite from scratch the whole thing, but way harder and tedious than just keep the original assets.

@@edmaster93 Completely wrong. Mega Drive does not have any way of smoothing pixels like this. This is either an upscaler, TV, or post processing done to the video. Either way, who would want to play a game looking like this. Only simpletons would.

The 8 and 16 bit generations really spoiled us, enjoyed growing up during them. Even got to see the Golden Age oif arcades growing up, with the likes of Joust, Missile Command, Defender, Frogger, Space Invaders, and the like.
