Mega Power KLM 747 Take off St Maarten

On board a KLM Boeing 747-400. (skip to 1.00 for take off start)
It's such a quick departure because whilst the plane was full with passangers, was lightly loaded with fuel for the short flight to Curacao, to stop the debate raging about the engines, power is from GE CF6, The GE logo is clear to see on the engine housing in front of the KLM Paint.

Good lord, dat acceleration after rotation tho! The 747 is still the most beautiful and timeless looking of all the hyper-passenger planes even after all these years. She has a gravitas that Airbus will never match (though I respect what they accomplished with the A-380). Truly the Queen of the Sky!

I was at London Heathrow waiting to board a Pan Am 747 to JFK in New York. It was at the old part of the airport and the gate windows were lower than modern ones. The nose filled the windows and was positively huge looking up at it. I took some 35mm photos of it. I also took pictures over the Atlantic in the afternoon where the clouds below were gold, orange and purple. It was a glimpse of Heaven. The plane was named Pan Am Clipper Maid of the Seas. Years later, I was watching a news bulletin. Lying on its side on the ground at Lockerbie, Scotland was the nose of Pan Am Clipper Maid of the Seas, taken down by a terrorist's bomb December 21, 1988. This chokes me up even now.

I am a bit paranoid when it comes to flying. Every time I sit next to the wing I keep checking every single bolt / piece there and wonder what if it comes loose :/ or just look at the wing when it flexes and say .... here it will snap ....
@Keithguinn97
@Keithguinn97 7 лет назад
you should seen the wing tests done, it can take like 600x its limit its insane. only thing id be worried about is metal fatigue causing the wing to snap, but that would take a long time and it would definitely be noticed
@kenanderson2002
@kenanderson2002 7 лет назад
There are so many regulations and protocols for maintenance of those planes.. like, the same mechanic can't work on both engines of a two-engine plane. It scares me too sometimes, but honestly, over 100,000 flights a day and all we ever hear about are the crashes. The only safer form of transportation is the elevator. The only part that scares me anymore is the landing. I don't know why, but I'm always afraid the gear is gonna snap under the pressure and roll the plane. But up until now my fears have been 100% unfounded.
@enigma63071
@enigma63071 7 лет назад
Charlie Harper lol actually landing is the easiest part for me because I look through the window to see how close are we to ground which makes me feel or think "well ...even if we fall we may still survive at this height" lol ...

I'm thrilled to have window seats, but especially 6 or 7 rows behind the wing, where I can watch all of the flap action. I like take- offs first, landings second, and in flight scenes next, especially when I can view something like the sun coming up over the horizon. I have never worried about bolts coming loose, but there is a possibility of someone getting out on a wing and trying to damage an engine like they were filmed doing on the Twilight Zone :)

A pilot i talked to before said that they rarely have to pull full throttle, because of the wear and tear to the engines. Sometimes they do if the runway is short or have full payload. Sometimes they do if there is no one omboard and maybe just riding cargo he said.
