Before assembly, a light coating of Talcum Powder inside a dry tire or dusting the tube with powder will prevent the tube from binding against the inside of the tire or the rim. It will also prevent a tube from creeping inside the wheel and damaging a valve stem if you are running low on air. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
Awesome Video, thanks for leaving the fall, glad you didn't get hurt. We are not perfect and showing mishaps makes you even more relatable. I'm thinking of upgrading my mom's power chair to make it better in different terrains. Your videos inspire confidence. I'm handy with tools, but I've only worked on cars, you make a BIG difference and impact the lives of others. Keep doing what you do. Gracias
you the best man... new subscriber here... disabled with wheelchair as well... you did the same thing i do when i fall - look around make sure nobody watching... lmao.
Thank you for the great video! We followed your instructions to the letter with my old worn out wheelchair and I now have an outdoor hunting chair that should last me years. I'd put a picture on here but I'm not sure how. Keep doing what you're doing, brother!
Man I love how the steam punk chair looks. At least you have more tread on your tires now, but you definitely learned a good piece of advice when test driving it and that is don’t be dumb especially with F3 motors on a C 500 23:26 that moment when you realize you’ve created a monster of a wheelchair.
Hey Dan. Do't know if you have tried it, but I have reused solid inserts in new tires by cutting them on a bias so that they can be inserted back into new tires. I first cut them out by cutting the tire in half along the tread; avoiding cutting into the solid insert.
@@TotallyNormal- hey ,I like your videos, you know if its possible to change a rear wheel drive chair to a front wheel drive chair? want to convert my Quantum Rival. any info would be nice.
I have a Magic Mobility Frontier V6 AT (Version 6/All-Terrain) with inflated All-Terrain tires. One thing I had to know how to do and have the tools and spare tires/wheels somehow nearby. My tools are in the backpack behind my chair and the spare tires/wheels are ALWAYS in the back of my van. That way as long as the van is with me I have a relatively easy way to deal with a flat. It does mean switching to the gray hard tires but I'm good with that. Of course, none of this works if I take the bus, which I haven't needed to do much since getting my mobility van. Without question the inflated tires are an AMAZING ride!
Try some talcum powder ( baby powder) on the inside of the tire and on the tube. It stops the tube from sticking to the tire when it heats up. The tube sticking to the tire can cause a flat if the tire slips. The tube can pinch or get a hole in it. I’ve been doing that with tires since my dad taught me when I was a kid To keep the tube from sticking to the tire. Back then we vulcanized patches on (started the glue on fire then blew it out, slapped a patch on and ran a roller over it.) putting baby powder on a patch prevents it from pulling the patch off from sticking.
Love the video! I have a Permobil F3, tires are a bit hard, when I go over cracks, bumps and the like, suffering from Spinal Stenosis, one of my troubles, the shock goes right to my lower Back, Outch! The pain can be quite debilitating. Having pneumatic ⚙⚙ tires is a must! I was getting ready to order factory pneumatic ⚙⚙ tires, I'm glad I watch your video first! Thanks 👍✝️🙏
Thank you for all your videos. I dont know much about these chairs and trying to help out a fellow vet to be able to be more independent again. We have a lot of sand so he gets stuck a lot. Seeing what I can do with a donated jazzy
Remember you're changing the leverage by putting bigger tires on it it's basically putting it in a higher gear you will get a faster speed unless hill climbing ability or it will just use more torque when under a load but it's gearing it higher the higher the tire the higher the gear without changing gears you can think of it as if you had a little tire would go really slow
Any idea of other wheelchair models you could do this with? Trying to revamp an electric wheelchair because I miss nature. As many models you can think of that could be modified off road please!
WOW...Thats a real Money Saver. The best price I've seen on the quantum turf tires was about $400 a pair. Assuming that the stock tires you removed are 3x8 inch, the Honda tires should fit on most wheelchair rims. Correct? It's nice that the reverse-rim trick worked out for you. I suppose the fancier (the more ornate) your rims are, the more difficult it becomes to reverse mount them. Thanks again Dan. Very nice demonstration. Good safety training clip too. lol
Being a plastic I would try heating it with a heat gun somewhere just to test ! if it bends with heat , I'm sure you could bend it enough to clean tires
This video is how I found you. A couple of years ago I bought my first lawn tractor, a couple of months ago I got my first pronto power wheelchair. I can't believe how unstable and bumpy the ride is in my yard. Something I never noticed walking behind my push lawnmower. It seems off road/sidewalk power chairs need a much wider, and longer base, and not so darn heavy. Have you ever made such a chassis? That is what I want to do. Why do you have so many power chairs? Thanks, Mike
when you said to keep an eye out for this c300 tire mod, that i might want to try it on my c300 since i am running with no plastics already... OH YEAH! thank you so much for the video/info. going to do it for sure. i even have an extra set of rims to mount them on. having the mod only add 1 inch to the chairs width is great! i am off to ebay! thanks again! [ps. lol...loved that you included your 'crash'...got to love soft forgiving grass.]
Just a suggestion. When inflating the tires after assembly remove the valve core and inflate the tire. It will seat better. Also, a adding straight valve core to the valve core tool makes it easier to handle/use. Please explain the significance of the 120 AMP controller. Also, what are the wattages of the motors and the F3's superiority ?
the R-net 120 amp controller is the most powerful version they make - and allows for surge currents to more easily move the chair (and larger tires) around. it also has more 'electrical headroom' and better cooling. the original motors that came on the permobil C300 chairs have a lot less power handling (torque) capabilities - the newer motors (while a bit faster) are also a LOT more efficient. the wattage of the motors is somewhat irrelevant, as the whole system uses a PWM drive scheme - but the 2 pole F-series motors they have EXCELLENT torque! -they hold their own against most 4 pole motors of other brands! they DO require the 120 amp controller to operate at full power though. putting larger, wider tires on a chair can really tax the drive system - and you want as much available power as possible to keep things from overheating, and run more smoothly. (less stalling of motors from overloading)
Interesting. The wheelchair I just got works well offroad, has decent traction. I took it on the lawn. and OMG, our sidewalks here which are like offroad. Uneven concrfete blocks with weeds growing out between. It works on these sidewalks, but because most of the curbs at intersections here aren't acessible, I luckily could stand for a moment to move the chair. it only weighs 58 lbs. I have RA, so just a moment on foot is OK, can usually get by without pain, takes a bit longer than that before the pain comes. I don't drive, so this will give me some freedom. I avoided what medicare can get for me, because not being able to drive, and the shape of our sidewalks it wouldn't have given me any freedon. More likely would have just gotten me stuck someplace. I was lucky to get some cash my way to pick something that suited my situation.
29:58 Instead of cutting, I used a heat gun to flex the fenders up. Worked great, kept the fenders and didn't have to cut anything. I have a M300, but it should work on any other plastics as well.
Take care of yourself, I am from Saudi Arabia, I love you and I have a handicap and the use of an electric chair, but it differs from you. thank you very much
Have them spray expanding foam between the rafters about 5.5 inches or more and it will stop that heat big time. When it gets to 92 outside here in Texas my attic is about 84 to 86. This unloads the AC units big time.
noooo! stay away from the expanding foam...FAR AWAY! besides being a pain in the butt if you need to access something entombed in the foam, if the person installing the foam doesn't do it correctly your home is ruined. even when done correctly many people are having issues with the off gassing. to avoid having your house and everything you own smell like a fish market best to use regular forms of insulation. since you have respiratory issues it's even more vital to avoid products with off gassing issues. R-value is the biggest thing to consider when working with insulation. i am sure you know that already. I have seen almost all your videos and it's fairly obvious you know your way around a toolbox and done enough wrenching to even know what size your muffler bearings are in your van.
Another Great idea is to install a 3M gable vent fan. Gives about 2200 CFM for $200 of parts (Fan, thermostat, louvered vent that opens/ closes automatically). It works really well if you have an attic door. It pulls all of the heat rite out of the house at night. Check places like home depot or lowes.
I think we’re gonna go with radiant barrier - it attaches super quick and REALLY cuts down the heat! Thanks for the suggestions everyone! - oh and a powered vent fan. There’s a perfect spot for a vertical blower with automatic louvers :-)
@@TotallyNormal- Oh, just an obvious reminder: Some people are against using an auto-on thermostat for the fan. If you had a house fire, the fan would turn on and actually accelerate the fire/ feed the fire. However, you being an ingenious inventor, maybe you could wire it into your smoke alarm to disable ???
Awesome! I actually filmed another 15 minutes of video playing around with that exact thing! ...this was getting pretty long though so I cut that bit out... Good to know it actually works!
Sadly, I kinda thought you might take a tumble. Have you thought about getting an all terrain stair climbing wheel chair - that might be the answer to your issues with comfort, etc.
I'm not a wheelchair user, but I picked up one of these c300's on craigslist, it needed quite a bit of work, and new batteries. Once I got it all working again, I managed to dump my chair just like you did... I was wondering if I was just being an idiot (... ehem, I would NEVER do that.... :P ) - or if it was really that bad... lol I like this off-road tire mod, I'll probably do that to my chair as well.
Will this work on a f3 chair. Have been wanting to do this for my wife's chair. We enjoy offloading and overlanding...camping etc. Been stuck a few times. Thanks for the info!!! Very cool!!!!!!
i cut that part out of the video for some reason.. but yes, spacers would work just fine. however this particular chair didnt have any plastics on it anyways :^)
Would it be more conducive of me to try and find a better wheel tire for my jazzy E3? It’s struggles in the grass and was wondering if there was anything I could use that was more aggressive than what’s on there. Haven’t seen anything as far as factory replacements go. Was wondering if anyone knew of a replacement that works well. Thanks for any help.😇👍🏻
Nice video. I'm sorry you tipped over, but glad you were not seriously hurt. An author friend once told me there is no such thing as a bad experience, just material for the next book. In your case, the next video. What are your thoughts about doing the same modification to a stock M300? Can you post your source for the OEM Honda tires? I would have thought the extra width of the offset and tires would have made the chair more stable.
FYI - if you want to keep the plastics on the chair, you can just use some poly spacers (or similar) to space up the front part of the top cover, and it'll clear the tires nicely - not sure why, but i cut that part out of the video when editing :^)
Hey is this possible on an m300? Also would you lnow of any caster replacement options that would work to help increase the capabilities of that chair?
Hey bud, in that episode where you put these Permobil Flat Free Tire 3"W x 14"T Black - Aggressive Tread on that F3, was it worth it? We get a lot of snow here, and my ramp is 30ft long and slightly steeper than code 1in to 12in my C300 does great; I tried the F3, and the ramp got wet from the rain. It's treated wood with a little alga, and I couldn't go a foot heading back up, so the rep figured the front suspension was cranked all the way tight, and it was, so he softened it, then hosed down the ramp, and he couldn't stop me from going up by pushing me from the front the tires wouldn't spin I just pushed him, but before we got to do that, a friend cleaned my deck with cleaner and power washed it. Another thing, do you think the gray tires have the same compound as the black in the stock tires because the C300 are gray and the F3 are black? They claim they're the same, just different colors. And it's not winter yet; thanks again for the great videos.
I was at the Portland zoo when I tipped over during a turn. Plus, my granddaughter was on my lap. So embarrassing! I almost rather people had not stopped to help me out.....
the wheels are different on the newer chairs, getting the offset so the tires won't interfere may take a bit of work.. ya cant just flip the wheels around unfortunately. also the fenders etc will needs some modification
That's a neat conversion Dan! I have MOT131092-06 & MOT131093-06 motors in my Quantum Q6 Edge. Are those the only motors that will work on this chair? I also have the original MK M22NF SLD G, 12 Volt - 51 Ah, Deep Cycle, Gel Batteries and they are only holding charge half as long as they used to so I will need to replace them. Are there any better batteries I can use for this wheelchair?
Okay instead of cutting the plastic like you said . Why not just put some Rubber grommets Underneath the plastic cover that would lift it up high enough that it would not rub on the wheels and you wouldn't have to cut it at all
Hey man, have you considered putting different casters on the back, maybe a touch wider? I just got a brand new chair from the VA and I’ve been hoping to modify my old C300 into something a bit more able to cross country in. I want to try fishing or hunting in. I want to build outriggers of some sort as anti tip laterally. Ummm, is that a tactical vest back there on the shelf behind you?
been looking for some air-filled replacement castors for the back.. ya cant go too much wider because they'll start fluttering around quite a bit - but air filled tires are a little bit wider and less weight.. should de the trick!
How bad do these hold dirt? My stock tires seem to really hold alot with the fine tread pattern, I was considering the stud tires or these to get more floatation but was hoping the bigger tread voids would let the dirt fall out easier instead of just holding a bigger amount of dirt lol.
@@TotallyNormal- no not really anything like that. Just dirt like under maple trees or from driving through stone or slate parking lot, if it's a little bit wet the fine dirt really sticks in my treads on the stock tires, they're just the standard grey flat free power chair tires most have.
My mom was just put into a wheelchair. I am looking for an affordable, repairable probably used( I'm not rich). Her insurance got her a very cheap manual chair.
As I'm going forward in my wheelchair from the left and the right motor which way is the motor turning? Are they turning the same or they turning opposite from each other? Because I accidentally bought a right motor when I need a left side motor. And I was told you had to program those motor to the controller when you replace a motor, but I'm not sure if I have to reprogram the controller to the motor. By the way, I was born disabled with spina bifida and lost my right leg back in 2014 and in 2020 I lost my left leg above-the-knee. I'm sitting on my right leg, but I have artificial light for the left side if only I would learn to put it on when my wheelchair quit on me and throw me out of the chair when I can get back up with my artificial left leg 🤣 👉🍗 my wheelchair is a TDX SP2
electric motors dont care which way they're turning - but on most chairs, the left and right aren't interchangeable - as in the left motors wont be able to mount up to the right side. its also best to replace motors as a pair - since they have to work together and one with a lot more/less use on it may not allow the chair to track straight
I have a quick question bud. I have a jazzy 1450 D Its extremely heavy. Both batterys are totally dead. What types of batteries can I run. And who or where do I get em. Since you are the Guru master powerchair sensei . How to fix this myself. I bought it in So Cal
looks like most of those chairs use the NF22 (or group 22) size batteries.. ya can usually get a pair of them on amazon or local vendors for a decent price.. i always recommend MK brand batteries.. they have the longest service life! but they do cost a bit more..
i'm having a heck of a time with my invacare m91 lights don't come on any more. what happened was i was pushing something with my chair i guess it was too much for it. i was wondering if there were any fuses that i could change out. i have already taken the chair apart today but i need a special screw driver to remove the screws on the controller . i'm hoping there is a fuse located there.
does the chair power up at all? most invacare chairs have fuses integrated directly into the battery cables themselves.. sometimes bolted directly to battery terminals
@@TotallyNormal- I checked for fuses on the battery cables but there don't appear to be any. No it doesn't power up at all. I was pushing a stuck lawn mower while sitting on the chair . The light on the joy stick turned off and never turned back on. I think i forced it too much
They don’t always look like fuses.. they have a couple versions.. one is a square block that screws right onto battery terminals.. (red or brown screw-on plastic nuts) and the other is buried under heat shrink on the cables.. (about same diameter as the cable) Just to verify- it’s good to check cables with a voltmeter.. seems odd but I’ve had it happen before and confused me for a week! (also the cable connectors can flash and soot can keep them from making a connection even though they’re plugged in) some chairs the cables themselves are a giant fusible link.. I’ve got photos on the website inside the controllers.. I don’t remember right off if there are any internal fuses. That chair should have a “shark” (mk5) equivalent controller
@@TotallyNormal- hey that's what it was as an in line fuse . I luckily have a few broken chairs around and was able to steal a fuse frim one of them. I did know about thos fuses at one point but it never dawned on me this time. Thanks for your help in back in business. Hey i make tshirts I'll design and make one for you if u like . Or even a baseball cap to have a more detailed design. Hey maybe we can make some for you to sell just a thought . And thanks again.
ive been surprised with the pronto M51.. its held up to all the abuse and mods pretty well!! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1YbWuwQ0AjQ.html
Hey sir! Just discovered your channel and I'm loving it! So many great ideas fory daughter's power chair! Quick question that I can't find the answer to anywhere. I need to remove the rear accessory tray that came mounted on her C300, but in order to access the bolts holding it on, I need to move (lower?) the 'suspension arms' for the rear castor wheels out of the way. Can I simply jack up the back of the chair and disconnect each arm from its 'spring/shock assembly' to let it drop down a few inches? Sorry for the made up part names... Haven't looked up any official nomenclature! 😄
hey! yup! thats the easiest way to do it.. just pop the shock bolts off.. its best to remove the lower bolts that are physically attached to the swing arms.. the top ones are mounted to a rod that goes all the way thru the chair, and it will rotate - making it difficult to remove the bolts/screws. for using a jack, just make sure its far enough under the chair so you're not lifting or touching any part of the back plastic cover (assuming ya haven't removed it already)
How did the ride at your friends house go? In the beginning of the video it looked like you were doing some night cruising. Did you inflate tires more? Think its a good mod for a camping chair?
Hey man how's it going. Can you suggest a good wheelchair with longer range. Because quantum edge HD range on that company says 25 km but i get only 4 kms . When I put new batteries for few months it's little better than that but after a few months the batteries get messed up I end up paying a lot to get the new pair off the batteries. Can you suggest best brand and model of wheelchair. Thanks
most of the permobil chairs ive had get anywhere from 9 - 14 miles on a charge.. and that's ACTUAL miles on the street! if ya get a chair with group 34 batteries.. roughly 8-10 miles.. and if you get one with group 24 batteries.. usually 12-14 miles depending on 'things' lol a number of the quantum chairs have NF22 batteries in them and those are SMALL!! ive got a Q6 edge 1 and it goes DEAD after 3.4 miles!! AmySystems is another good brand too - ya can get them with large batteries and hit the 12 mile mark pretty easily
just spoke to someone that put these tires on his edge 2 (they should be the same as the edge 3) just needed to add 3 washers as spacers on each wheel stud, and everything bolted right back up!
Hello Sir, I have a Invacare Pronto M41 and it squeaks like crazy. I think it’s the foam filled tires squeaking. Can you give me any pointers on how to quiet them down? Thanks!!
