MEGADETH Dystopia Album Review | Overkill Reviews 

I'm a pretty left leaning dude, but I have no problem with any of Dave's lyrics. Fantastic album.

Compared to the last album, this is a masterpiece. A good return to form for Dave Mustaine, especially in the vocals. He's got the attitude and nastiness back in his voice that was so prevalent in Peace Sells and Rust in piece. 6 out of 5 stars. To me, it's that good. Especially the song Poisonous Shadows. worth the price of admission. That's my two cents. Enjoy your reviews a lot. Keep up the good work.

Dystopia is the heaviest album after Rust In Peace

Also, I disagree about not hearing enough Kiko, he solos for like 10 minutes on this album!

Conquer or Die was very good song

Somebody explain me the rating? One skull of two skulls? Is it: No skull = bad? One skull = good? Two skulls = great? Or???

Kirk Hammett plays for an average of 30 seconds on each Metallica track(that contains solos) and he is considered one of the greats. Kiko played quite a lot on this album by adding a lot of counter-melodies which added much needed body to Daves riffs that has hardly been seen in Megadeth for a while...or ever. The sound is fresh and Adler does what is necessary to make the music flow. I noticed Adler quite a lot on this album and added some great chops where needed. The rolling toms and bass patterns as well as precision kick drum ability worked quite well and set him apart from all the other Megadeth drummers that came before. Kiko knows when to step forward or step back in order to make the songs work. It's not all just about 4 minute solos. Kiko adds much needed acoustic parts as well, which made songs like 'Conquer or Die' and 'Poisonous Shadows' such hits, which honestly caught me by surprise that left me sitting with a shit-eating grin. An 8/10 for a great comeback. If Megadeth can make a 16 song album, that is consistent with a style or theme, they will surpass a lot of current-gen metal bands out there as well as fellow rivals, Metallica. PS: I don't really give a shit about lyrics anyway, so my score is more based on musical content and quality, more than someone's words.

*I agree that we needed to hear more of the two new members *Tracks that i liked: The threat is real, Fatal Illusion, Bullet to the brain, Poisonous shadows,Conquer or die, and Lying in state *Also, the album felt like it had a bit of Prog influence with Spanish guitar acoustic parts and all which I enjoyed a lot. Definitely would recommend

As a huge Megadeth fan and a fan of yours, Sam, I got disappointed with the review :( expected more in depth analysis of the tracks; lyrically and musically. Given the fact that it did great with sales and reviews. Coming now from the latest metallica review I feel really jealous and sense some fangirling here :P :D

This album has an intense focus to it. Mustaine is always moving forward and knocking out albums while a Lot of his peers continue to tour on their past work.

I really love your history of metal stuff. I kinda felt that the new Megadeth members made a difference that was clear. Great heavy fast new disc from them. The rating system was a head scratcher but either way, I got your views. keep up the good work!

One skull out of two skulls? Where is the chance to succeed or really fail for you? Wow, I will say this...this album is good from an old schooler point of view. Not in the same ball park of greatness as the new Testament and worlds better than his nemesis Metallica.

This whole album was nothing short of a masterpiece. Engame has nothing on this. When I think of their catalog I'll put it in the top 5.

As a major Megadeth fan, this is a fantastic album. A heavy, bad ass thrash record with some fantastic songs. I didn't much care for the final song, the cover of Foreign Policy, but everything else was excellent and there were, for me, 7 or so songs that really stood out. I give this a 9.5/10

I like you Sam, but disagree for the most part. Kiko's talents are well-featured and displayed on this record. The riffing is fantastic and plentiful. The drums are a little vanilla for Adler, so I'll give you that, but his song contributions are evident. As far as lyrics - so what? Megadeth has always been political and you don't have to fucking agree with it for it to be good.

and what i love about dave is that even tho megadeth sold 50 million albums and counting hes still angry and devoted, i mean hes made tons of money and he could rest on his laurels but he doesnt and i give that alot of respect !

My favorite tracks of this album, DYSTOPIA and Death from Within, album sure could have used more riffing and more songs.

I personally like the album and especially Chris's input, but I do agree that Kiko didn't really add a whole lot to the sound aside from some of the more grand sections. Who knows, maybe that'll change on the next inevitable album.

Put it up against Metallica's latest offering and once again Dave shows that Lars and James made a huge mistake.

Two things will make the next album better than Dystopia- Dave's lightened up about doing stuff like The Conjuring live again, meaning he's loosened up a bit on stuff in general probably. The next factor is their new drummer is a veteran of black and death bands, and both Daves have hinted on blast beats and other stuff on the next album so it should be interesting

I think it's better to have a snippets of the song/s you are reviewing so to have an idea on what you're trying to say. Nonetheless it's a good short reviews

I've listened to a Kiko Loureiro's interview to an internet radio station that when he was invited to join Megadeth most of the songs were already ready and, as a newcomer member, he wasn't confortable to arrive showing all his ideas to something that was almost done. Probably we will listen more from Kiko's ideas to Megadeth on the next record.

"No controlling who comes through the door" is a fact that has nothing to do with political viewpoints. Countries all over the world cannot control who comes in no matter how much they try. Enjoyed the review though.

would like to see mustaine doe one final album with metallica...wishful freakin thinking but if they could duplicate just half of Ride the lighting (modern day Mozart in Motion) would be worth the risk.

Dave's politics are always discussed and that's cool. I think we crossed over into dangerous territory with people who forgot what "agreeing to disagree" means. I have friends on both sides of the political fence and even though I am definitely entrenched in the conservative side of the fence, I still completely understand and respect the opinions of others. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this album but Sam, the rating system is not good. It's simply inadequate when awarding "skulls." I would at least prefer a 5 skull system. Please reconsider the current ratings system as I really enjoy your reviews and really, your entire body of work has been amazing.

album is a big step up from Supercollider, but tbh it still isnt that great, I feel like he wont reach what he captured with Endgame again..that album was special.

I think there's only like one speed metal part on the whole album. It's thrashier I guess but you'd get the same results if you took off the lamest songs from the last two albums, and combined the best tunes into one disc. Which is to say... it's okay, but it's no Countdown to Extinction. I don't think it's just the big 4 getting old... if you look at Exodus, Overkill, Death Angel, Flotsam and Jetsam, Kreator and possibly Testament, I think that those bands have gotten better with age!

Are you kidding Kiko goes wild on this album and chris drumming is great. This is the 1st time since Marty that i think Dave just let them have some much needed input! Great album. Love kikos style, and i think dave does to. Some really great tracks on this album Poisonous Shadows - Is my fav for sure Conquer or die - Is amazing! Lying in state - great vocals and sweet riffige. looks whos talking - sounds post The system has failed. Post american world - Also great vocals and all around guitar work. 4 skulls out of 5 for me. Still listening after its release.

Not enough input from Adler or Kiko? What? Dave specifically went out of his way to ask for their input, saying something like "What do you guys think Megadeth should be?" or something (forget the exact phrase). This is coming from Adler himself in an interview... they had TONNES of input and contributed a lot to songwriting. One of the main reasons the album sounds so "Megadethy" is that two huge Megadeth fans are now members of Megadeth and had so much input into the album. Anyways I generally agree with your review aside from that one point, it's a very good album, some excellent guitar work as always (what else do you expect from Megadave?), but as usual I don't give two shits about metal lyrics, just the riffing and the solos. Disagree about Adler's drums not being heard in the album, I think that was something that has been missing in Megadeth since Menza left, Adler adds a new groove to the band that has been missing.

I'm a huge Megadeth fan, but I prefer to pretend their new albums don't even exist. I think Sam is being extremely polite in this review (which I appreciate) but sometimes you have to admit when a band has just lost it. It's quite heartbreaking.

I love this album

As a Conservative Metal fan i loved the lyrics in this album, brave stuff from Dave. I have been listening to left wing Metal lyrics all my life without any prejudice or concern but it's cool to hear something from my side of the aisle.

Long time fan Sam, but come on, what kind of review was that? Only three tracks discussed and no mention of the variety of music and musicianship displayed? Dystopia is a much improved step forward versus recent iterations versus personnel changes; this album deserves more of your effort.

I despair that Megadeth in 2016 is receiving so much attention when they have become a watered down and very thingly stretched metal band seeking mass acceptance rather than pushing the envelope. I listened to this album and was utterly bored! there is far better stuff coming out in the next few weeks. Sam, dude, get yourself over to the UK and hear some of the home grown talent we have here. the new Beholder album is due to hit tomorrow (Jan 29th) and I promise you it will blow megadeth out of the water!

Megadave have been treading water for too long. Adler could be ANY drummer for all he was allowed to do on this record. 1 out of 2 skulls is fair. 50%. Must do better! Or fuckin give it up gracefully.........same with the rest of the old bands. We'll see how tallica does with Hardwired but Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth have all disappointed. Suicidal's album had some cool shit.

Can’t believe no one ever mentions Dave Mustain’s supposed convergence to Christianity. Puts lyrics in a whole new light...”No controlling who comes through the door...” From a spiritual perspective, beware the occult and satan’s dark tricks. I wish MEGADETH WELL DAVE MUSTAINE would go back to the old MEGADETH style like killing is my business peace sells even so far so good so what the last album which I can hope of them returning to is rust in peace which is a METAL Master peice all the new styles suck I can listen to some of it but it kills me to say when musicians stop taking mind altering substances it sometimes kills the aggressive tendencies and the music suffers I praise anyone who stops taking drugs it's just ashame it fucks with the writing process of a decent album fingers crossed MEGADETH can return to glory HELL AWAITS DARKNESS IS THE LIGHT

Straight to the point! Dave never leaves anything to be in question of what he is saying. In the song "The threat Is Real", watch the news and other news sources. Dave isn't just making things up in his head, he sees a very possible end to America and what it stands for.

Musically, probably the best I've heard from them in years. Constantly found myself headbanging and digging a lot of the lead work. Lyrically...eh. I know Megadeth has ALWAYS had political lyrics, but Dave's extreme right-wing commentary sounds close to what Glenn Beck would vomit of his mouth. If you can ignore that, the album is pretty amazing.
