Same same, could not believe how hard this was at the time, I always thought this was such a great performance. We use to record videos from headbangers ball and so many movies, and yes for whatever reasons still have almost all of them on vhs tapes….lol
Arsenio did so much for Heavy Metal and Rap.... He had a crazy famous show, and wasn't afraid to give these artists that usually wouldn't have a chance to be on a National TV talkshow an audience. So damn cool.
@@michaeltroina11Anthrax was on in 92, they played Only and Got the Time, they called it a mini concert and let the crowd on to the floor and had a mosh pit and everything.
@@thomasfoytek7633yes. i’ve always heard mercyful fate in that section and in other songs. that mid bit in ‘curse of the pharaohs’ is so groovy, james brown could dance to it. not now, of course.
And Nick Menza speeds up like a punk band every time he changes. Meaning they have to speed up their solos, proving they can play those licks faster each time he changes lol.
@@remember_Pat_Tillman People rag on Dave's singing ability, but I think his voice sounds badass. The shrill crazy schizo character he puts on is really creative and matches the lyrics and music well. Plus his ability to write creative lyrics and catchy vocal melodies for well arranged songs makes up for whatever pure singing ability or pleasant-sounding voice he may be lacking.
@@randysmith9841 stuff like this was starting to become more mainstream. Wasn't there yet but it was on its way. They had stuff like this on MTV and headbangers ball alot but yea it wasn't super common on late night TV but like I said metal was starting to creep more into the mainstream around this time. I see they did a shorter version of the song for TV lol.
They played on Arsenio in 92 or 93 as well, promoting Countdown... They played Symphony.. It's here on youtube as well. Arsenio always had great artists perform at his show.
Arsenio was really cool guy to have a band this heavy on his show! Plus the lighting, the stage and the multiple cameras were really well done. Arsenio spared no expense.
I heard Hangar 18 live in 1990 and it's still one of my most epic hearing experiences ever. The tempo changes and solo's are like a Rembrandt of metal.
Wow! This might just be the best live version of the song I've ever heard. Was a nice touch cutting out the pre-verse appregios; it worked a treat. Furthermore, even Mustaine's vocals sound a lot better than usual.
idk, i don’t think it was that inventive or the note choice was that baffling he’s had great moments, dave ellefson, but i don’t think this is one of them. was never a fan of the intro, but he is a tone beast at least.
I love Arsenio he is so cool and funny, I wish he had appeared in more films than he did and love the fact that he included the boys of Megadeth in his show. Hail Megadeth
I remember staying up to watch this! It really was a shock that they were playing on mainstream TV! I remember being completely blown away by this performance, and watching it now, it's stil pretty mind blowing how good it is!
@@princesssolace4337 I'm not mentally ill so, unlike you, I can enjoy both bands equally. I just think is funny how megadeth fans are still butthurt about metallica's success. Get over it.
@@m0line Seriously, I am fcukin disappointed from Justice till Hardwired. U need to understand the context here. I grew up listening to Metallica when the first 3 album hit the market. I'm so dam dissapointed with 'black' album compared to the other metal releases in 1990. MEGADETH - Rust in Peace SLAYER - Season of the Abyss ANTHRAX - Persistence of Time SEPULTURA - Arise (1991) Those are 4 metal albums that don't dissapoint. In 1989 we get - SEPULTURA - Beneath the Remains. TESTAMENT - Practice what u Preach. FAITH NO MORE - Real Thing.
@@m0line it's not about success it's about the quality of music. Metallica peaked in the 80's and never evolved their music. Every thrash band from that era shits on Metallica after 88-89
Man, I remember seeing this the night it aired. Such good times. And Arsenio was the man. He always had excellent musical guests, and this was no exception. Thank you for posting this!
That was pretty bad ass! Nice short version. That was a great show for sure. One of the longest index fingers in show business too to this day on Arsenio. RIP Nick Mensa.
That performance must have been awesome being on the set of that show..... I remember fondly watching this back in the day thinking 🤔, WOW imagine the sound pressure coming off that stage!!!!?? 1of the all time gr8tst REAL LIVE performances!!!!!!!!! Miss ya Nick& Marty!!!!
Just fabulous for a TV performance. Hats off to Arsenio and his crew. Mustaine and the lads on their A+ game. And it almost goes without saying but Marty is an absolute wonder of a musician.
I went to see Megadeth (for by that time the 2nd or 3rd time) at the first Gigantour. At one point I think they were playing Tornado of Souls, and some kid was bouncing all around (I wasn't in the pit), and knocked into me. I looked over and his mom was right there with him, and she leaned over and apologized "He's just really excited to see Megadeth, it's his first time!" and I told her "No problem". I got it. And it was cool of her to be there with him.
I've been listening to Megadeth for almost 20 years now... And TO THIS DAY it still amazes me how Marty can play note by note live, but doesn't make it boring The best thrash guitarrist ever
I'd say James is the best thrash guitarist ever, as thrash is VERY rhythm based, and nobody came up with rhythms like James. But you could certainly make the argument that Marty was the best thrash LEAD guitarist. Dave hired him for a reason. Go look up his work in Cacaphony, pre-Megadeth, and you'll see why Dave hired him. Dude was insane.
Wow, that's probably the closest to studio sound quality I've ever heard in a Megadeth live performance. It's hard to find performances with this quality in any band, whether it's rock/metal or whatever. Usually live guitar tones seem to sound a little "washed out" and not nearly the same, but here the entire mix of all instruments is tight and amazing.
We have to keep in mind that sometimes the microphone of the recording device gets distorted so it might not be problems with the live performance (necessarily). You are correct in what you said though. This one is crisp in every way in comparison to most.
@@Chimchimchu No I didn't mean anything about performance quality, only that I think that the tone itself typically sounds different in most live situations. Concerts aren't a controlled environment like a studio, and depending on the live mix and the acoustics of the venue, it's subject to alot of different variables. But here everything sounded amazing.
Killing performance. Never listen much to it but being musician I can greatly appreciate the high quality music they just delivered. Can’t believe Dave deep in hard drugs back then, it’s beyond understanding. How could he play that good while being high?!?
Saw them at the Diamond Ball Room in OKC, OK. in 1991 I think. The A/C went out, the place was hosing us down with pitchers of beer to keep us cool. That whole song I think I looked up twice, the rest of the time was compelet head banging. Ah, 19 years old. What a time to be alive.
That was an awesome performance. The intro and other parts were shortened obviously for live t.v. Imagine being there. Those that were there were very lucky.
Is no one going to mention the speed of this? This has to been at least 10+% faster than the album version which is already a pain in the arse to be able to play
Imagine if Megadeth weren’t forced to go mainstream in the 90s and we got a RIP 2.0. I loved the albums they created (even risk) but this is their best.
@@mamaburra69 yes they were. They weren’t able to be themselves. Youthansia was slowed on purpose, Dave even made some songs (blood of heroes, and Killing road) faster on the remaster version since he hated how he was forced to keep all the songs at a certain tempo to get on the radio. With trust he was told to sing the lyrics rather than speak them, Marty quit because his solo got taken out without consent and he even said being in the band held him back musically since megadeth was going all poppy and wrote simpler riffs.
MARTY. LEGEND!!!! He is not on enough "best guitarists" lists because people who make those lists don't play the instrument. Bradley Hall has given hum a lot of much deserved respect and attention...love that guy! 👍🏼🎸💪
F-big brilliant. I never saw this first time around being from the UK, but have watched this video since. What a killer performance, and what a great guy AH is.
