Metallica kicking Dave out was the best thing that ever happened to him. It put a chip on his shoulder and I think that's why Megadeth has put out such great music.
I agree, but I've wondered if cliff never died, and dave never got kicked out. what would be metallica be now. I love Jason newsted and kirk hammett kicks ass. 95% of metallica after black album (other than a few remakes) sucks, not metallica at all. old guys looking for air play for $$. this song to me Megadeths best overall song. might of had a david Gilmour vs roger waters ... dave vs james/ lars, clash. but still produced some killer albums. Dave brings great metal music and lyrics. Dave and James could have written some incredible shit. and lars' serious drum lyrics would also contributed. ..lol. I think Metallica would still be an incredible heavy metal band. I Love the old metallica up to "adjustice for all" will give them their air play "black album" .
vin ALWAYS freaks me out when HEARS MEGADETH, he was so lost in metalicaca's slow crap, their still lost in the 80's!!!! as of 2019!!! MEGADETH RULES!!!!!!D
Dave Mustaine, introducing 'Holy Wars' in 2016: "I wrote this next song over 20 years ago, and the lyrics still mean the same fucking thing today." The most important metal song of all time.
Any metal worth its fucking salt will remain relevant for decades after its creation. The only way to change that is for people to stop being such stupid, ignorant, selfish, greedy, perverted, hateful, hypocritical, religitarded asshats. But since that will never happen, metal will remain relevant for eons.
I don't see how it's an "attack" on Israel (though it is far fro many kind of commendation). If anything, it's a subtle shot at the "good ole USA of A". Anything goes wrong ,we blame outside entities, point fingers at everyone but our own selves. Sure, you can pin blame on Israel (or where/whatever) and their teachings (religious, political, or otherwise), but how are we any better with our own indoctrination and ideological brainwashing? All the rotten shit right in our own back yard is not necessarily cos of some overseas boogeyman - odds are it's all cos of our own boogeymen who started the whole thing ages ago under some bullshit facade of "noble freedom & liberty". "Don't look now to Israel" = don't be so quick to blame anyone else "It might be your homeland" = take a look at YOURSELF and YOURS. Anyone who joins politics or the military or a religious organization in some zealous "defense" of this country, had better know good and goddamned well what they're actually joining and "fighting" for, not just what they've been TOLD it is, or what they THINK that might be - the problems we face here may not be cos of some "enemy over there", it could right here at HOME. WE could be the bad guy and not even realize it cos we are os goddamned full our our own haughty and hypocritical hubris.
@@BlackieNuff You do know that Dave is a Christian, right? I'm sure most fans do. Really this song definitely speaks to me because I'm a Christian too, and people like us don't like the religious behavior of Bible thumper types who thinks that their problems are everybody else's problem.
@ HaveButOneLife Umm, duh - yeah, everyone knows Mustaine went Christian, a long time ago. Amazingly though, he is one of the few "born again" metal masters who has managed to keep the beliefs out of the music, or, only Incorporate enough without it being overtly obvious and thereby beating us over the head with it. I'm not even sure what your point is, cos I posted a couple of lengthy comments and I suspect you are zeroing in on one particular thing I said. If you cannot be arsed to copy & paste what I said that you take issue with so I can get context, then I cannot be arsed to worry about whether I addressed your point or not.
Sori is awesome!!! Vin I can't believe a metalhead who plays guitar never listened to Megadeth before!! Dave Mustaine would be on the Mount Rushmore of metal riff creators.
Sebastian I absolutely agree, I'm definitely one of those people who think Metallica has kinda sucked after the black album but I'm also someone who likes some stuff post BA as well but they are far from the best musically, talent and creative wise. Slayer will always be my favorite with Megadeth a very close second and I have always stood ground and said the Megadeth is probably the most pure creative and talented of them all.
@The All Rounder 2 I don't think it's all about heaviness Although I see painkiller so close to holy wars , yet there's something about HW that couldn't be found in any other song I mean the riffs, vocals, solos, drums, tempo, lyrics, transitions , everything about it is just legendary.
@The All Rounder 2 Yeah,.. not based soley on heaviness. It's the overall feel of the song. Probably also has to do with the era you grew up with as well, like a template for: You want to know what metal sounds like? Here! These statements are obviously ridiculous anyways lol
If metallica had never done that, megadeth would have never be born and to be honest it was good he got kicked out. Thankyou metallica. MEGADETH all the way.
People don't realize that there was a possibility that Dave wouldn't be able to play again because of a disease or something like that which is one of the reasons they kicked him out
The greatest metal song ever!!! I know many don`t like Mustaine`s voice, but nobody sound like him, he`s unique!! And the instrumentation is much better than anybody, inclusiv Metallica, hammet is just a good guitar player, but Mustaine/Friedman are epic!!
More importantly the drumming, I like Metallica but the reason I don't love them is because Lars is horrible and every drummer megadeth has had is always solid, Samuelson was my favorite but Mensa was a beast too
There is more to music then guitars lol. Megadeth fans are the worst, being a better guitar player better music at all. megadeth does not have the range, melody, harmony, vocal hoosk metallica does while still maintain the aggression.
MonkE Magic lol you can’t even spell Metallica right so doubt you listening to a whole album. Megadeth only have 2 masterpieces album Metallica have 4 maybe 5
Even though Metallica is my favourite thrash-metal band of all time I have no problem in admitting that "Rust In Peace" arguably is the greatest thrash-metal album ever made. It just kicks you in the face from start to finish!
vLarsn wow wow wow! Hold on, hold on! Your throwing around "the greatest thrash metal" a little too easily, I wouldn't really classify Any Metallica as thrash metal! Never mind GREATEST thrash metal band (That's fucking Slayer! ALL THE WAY!) And while Rust in peace, is a kick ass metal album. Again thrash?! And.....greatest thrash album?! Na!! Not even close!! Slayer alone has at least 6 albums that are way greater thrash albums, then there is a good few from Testament, etc etc etc. But not Metallica, and not Rust in peace by Megadeath!!
Joseph Rubin- Talking about which band or album that's the greatest will obviously just be based on your own opinion, and if your favourite thrash metal band is Slayer that's fine. However saying that Metallica was never a thrash metal band, that's just factually wrong. If you don't think "Kill'em All" is a thrash metal album, then I don't think you know what thrash metal is. And yes, "Rust In Peace" is also a thrash metal album.
vLarsn I guess we differ greatly on what thrash is, I'll agree that kill em all is as close to thrash as Metallica ever got. But that's all. And just to clarify, I love all old school Metallica (till after the black album) I just don't think they're thrash. They were really heavy speed metal, but not thrash! But hey, that's my opinion I'll add this one point. I don't think its possible for any band with Lars Urlich on drums to be thrash. Lars CANNOT play a fast double bass blast beat, which is what thrash is about (and which Metallica never had)
Cool fact to know that the second part of this song 'The Punishment Due' is about The Punisher. "Wage the war on organized crime Sneak attacks Repel down the rocks Behind the lines Some people risk to employ me Some people live to destroy me Either way, They die They killed my wife and my baby With hopes to enslave me First mistake... Last mistake Because I don't say it Don't mean I ain't thinkin' it Next thing you know, They'll take my thoughts away.."
I grew up loving Metallica and never gave Megadeth a chance for the longest time, but I much prefer them now. They've stayed consistent all these years. You should do Hanger 18.
I love Megadeth, but they've had some rocky albums and even though i appreciate all their early stuff, i can admit that they've made some wacky songs. Captive honor is a weird one, and so is victory. While victory is kinda catchy, it's literally just him naming off the titles of his songs. the instrumental is always great but the lyrics and what the songs are about are way too hit and miss. You got sweet shit like, Hangar 18, Good morning black Friday, Holy wars, than you got shit like Captive honor, victory, when etc. To be honest, my gripe is that they're too inconsistent. Amazing songs with interesting topics vs lame and mundane stuff like getting being butt raped in prison, getting cheated on and making a song where you jerk your own ego by listing off every songs title. Imagine if any other band had a song where they just listed off the titles of their songs. It would be lame, and it's still lame with Megadeth. My only other gripe, is that Dave kinda wasted potential moments. There have been times when I've listen to some of the songs and it starts out amazing. "This song can be a masterpiece or this riff is masterful" and then he sticks it in a song that kinda wastes it or completely ruins it. A good example of this is the song "When". When uses the ktulu clean riff he wrote. Creepy, haunting and evil. Metallica used that riff perfectly, in a song that is lovecraftian as fuck, no word needed and yet it perfectly encapsulates everything lovecraftian. It's fucking amazing. Dave uses it in "when" the song starts slow, building, it has this desolate feeling, like you're in some mindscape devoid of life, hatred slowly festering as the song builds. Even the way the vocals are mixed is great. Its as if the voice is actually in your head. Like you're the one having these thoughts. This song has the potential to be fucking great. ANNND, nope. it becomes a shit version of "am i evil". I was completely baffled when i first heard this song and then fucking enraged. Dave used his ktulu riff and wasted it on this song? Fuck man. To a lesser extend, "My last words" is like this. That fucking intro is so good. And the song doesn't really live up to it. While the song isn't bad, (I quite like the song) its kinda typical and doesn't elevate to where it could go. I don't really know how to explain this one because I don't want to make it seem like i hate the song. I really like it, but there's this feeling that i get of "there's something missing." The song works great without the intro and doesn't even feel like the intro belongs. If he would have made the intro a full fledged song and the rest of the song it's own thing that would have been great.
Megadeth's been *generally* consistent but that's honestly one of the reasons I prefer metallica; for better or worse, they experiment quite a bit more. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, but at least they try. I like that variety.
The first half of the song was inspired by a concert in Ireland when Dave dedicated a song to "the cause" and inadvertently caused a riot. The second part is about the Marvel comic book character, The Punnisher.
This song is a Metal masterpiece, love the titles of what you were thinking, and Vin if you are not prepare for a lot of transitions, when you do Opeth once again you should react to “Ghost of perdition” if you don’t like it, Opeth is not for you, move on to other bands... keep the good work!
@vinand Sori Personally I wouldn't do Ghost if you didn't like Harlequin Forest even if it's highly requested considering your reaction. It's from the same album so you might experience the same reaction to it. I'd recommend something from Blackwater Park, like Bleak (singer of Porcupine Tree does the chorus vocals) or Drapery Falls for someone familiarizing themselves w that style
The first half of the song is about a time Dave went to I think Ireland (been years since I read up on it) and said something about what a kid had on a t-shirt and stirred up some political issue. The second part is just about The Punisher. With the ending being a reprise of the first half.
FrenziedChaos they were playing in northern Ireland that time when Dave said some stupid crap about religion and was more or less ran out of the place after the concert.
I was a massive megadeth fan then went to see them in the late 80s..if I'm not mistaken sanctuary supported them..? (Antrim forum) Good show then mustaine spouted shit and I quote 'power/victory to the ira I hope they reclaim this country or similar words' .. I was there I heard it and I thought what an arsehole..! Holy wars apparently was written about it... I'm not political or sad I'm just saying that's what I heard that night..hes lucky he wasn't shot as the the paramilitary factions in northern ireland controlled everything..
It's often been said that" intellectual minds tend to like metal, classical, Opera and Symphony". Because it's composed rather than just written Holy Wars by Megadeath is definitely a musical composition piece. I am so happy you caught that.
L Mulligan and by rival he meant failed miserably to compete against. Seriously these guys can't even sell out a show anymmore. They literally have one single that has ever gain any success. They would probably have to open for breaking Benjamin or avenged sevenfold of you put them in the same show
Megadeth has always instrumentally been better than Metallica. They just GET what metal is, and just know how to make better thrash metal. More versatility and consistency doesn't hurt either. Its a band that only gets better and better with more listening. Not to mention, Dave is a better songwriter and guitar player overall than James and Kirk. period. The Rust In Peace album is a metal masterpiece and a magnum opus of thrash. Its a front-to-back gem.
Metallica is far better than Megadeth, and a lot more versatile too. Megadeth has done the same album for decades. Metallica change musically on each album (for the best or for the worst).
Brios There is nothing versatile about kirk and his wah pedal. Its the same all the time. James is a great songwriter and Im my opinion is just as good as dave. But kirk couldnt even string one of dave's guitars, no where near the same level.
Im glad you guys did some Megadeth! :D Their Rust in Peace album is incredible, and I highly suggest the song "Tornado of Souls." Also I believe Dave Mustaine got kicked out of Metallica because of his alcoholism, but him and the band are on good terms now. Theres a few videos you can find where Metallica and Megadeth are performing together and its pretty awesome. Keep on kicking ass you two!
Dave is and was a very intelligent man! He has since then became a Christian and always dives deep for lyrical content even if people don't approve! At this point there's nothing left to prove. Dave is devoted to his beliefs and has lost some fans along the way but if you here him describing old lyrics from songs like peace sells ...but who's buying and holy wars he shows a curious nature when accessing his brain and it's discoveries! The. first line in peace sells is "What do you mean I don't believe in God? I talk to him everyday! So you can see him battling his own intelligence as he drifts along the megadeth journey many times at war with himself. If you want Scripture with your megadeth try "shadow of death" from the system has failed! Great little interlude of sorts! Anyway, loved your reaction and give megadeth a chance every album varies in structure and the lyrical content will always make you go back and read again. I was won over by them when this album came out. This music did come from a place of anger and confidence to prove not just to his old band mates that he could write at that caliber but to the world as well. I highly respect this man and will continue to thrive to uphold the underdog of this metal band competition. My fav. This album for me is a desert island stranded type choice of cd! Again just my thoughts! God bless.
Yeah, I understand how fans would be upset about him not playing certain songs but he is trying to true to himself and he just doesn't feel comfortable reciting certain lyrics. I can understand both points of view.
By far, but to me he is more of a rhytm guitarist and a mastermind of the band than a solo guitarist. And he's always picked solo guitarists that are even better (technically) than him, even if they sometimes struggled with his complex rhytm patterns (e.g. Marty Friedman).
Mustaine destroys Hammett imo...I do not think any of the members of Metallica are great musicians (except for Cliff) - they are all very good and work well together and they write great riffs but as far as being complex/technical or super fast they fall short. I think Metallica's lyrics rarely get very deep either...pretty straight forward...saying all that they still have wrote some of the best songs in metal history and their first three albums are masterpieces.
VinAnd Sori - yes, it’s not even close. Marty Friedman also an infinitely better guitar player than Hammett. Megadeth are just better technically, better musicianship all round. No contest.
So this song is called Holy Wars...The Punishment Due. this song is technically two songs put into one. The first part Holy Wars talks about Holy wars while the Second part of the song The Punishment Due is a song about Marvel's The Punisher, Mustaine sings about what happened to Frank Castle and how he became The Punisher.
I was about to subscribe to your channel but changed my mind after listening to you say "I'm thankful that we have people all over the world that are taking the fight over there and not have it happening in our country."
I knew this would be coming soon haha. A few suggestions for the underground time: PT - arriving somewhere but not here Haken - the endless knot Pink floyd - time (primetime worthy)
Only because I chilled to a couple Pink Floyd songs today, High Hopes and On the Turning Away would also be very good songs to react to if you guys haven’t heard them.
First part of the song (holy wars) is about the conflict in ireland between the irish protestants and the irish catholics, he got the inspiration after yelling "give ireland back to the irish" on stage while playing a show in ireland, the second part after the clean solo (The punishment due) is about the comic book the punisher
Probably the best THRASH SONG ever written...on a 1-10 scale...15... How about reacting to MEGADETH’S - PUBLIC ENEMY NO. 1...or a different band...WAR OF AGES - ETERNAL...or another band...SLEEPING GIANT - ARMY OF THE CHOSEN...
Hey Vin, In reference to your request for ideas on how to keep track of requested songs that people would like you to review: How about setting up a poll and list off some songs on it and have the viewers vote on which one they'd most like to see you react to
Loved the reaction just as a correction though, the ending lyrics are "mercy killings" repeating followed by "killings" repeated not "massacres" and "cowards" person who uploaded the lyric video didnt pay attention lol so thanks for pointing that out lol
Metallica- The 4 Horsemen Megadeth- Mechanix It was written by Dave and James before Kill 'Em All was recorded, so they both own the rights. Same song, different lyrics.
Great Reaction! Second half of this song after the eastern acoustic guitar part is call "The punishment due." Based on The comic book character "The Punisher."
The first four verses are inspired by the troubles in Northern Ireland at the time. He made some remark about that on stage when drunk which incited a riot among the protestants and catholics in attendance and the band had to complete their Irish tour in an armoured bus for fear of reprisals. The rest is about The Punisher
love this song! top 10 song for me. Dave was kicked out for being an alcoholic and an ass. And this is two songs so the lyrical content changes at 6:20 to "The Punishment Due"
Yeah, I'm not sure about the "being an ass" part. He gained that reputation much much later because he would always be angry at Lars and James for kicking him but mainly because he's has controversial opinions (most albums mostly have political lyrics) and he doesn't fear to say them. So he got kicked just because of his addiction. sry for bad english :)
"Mustaine was officially fired from the band because of his alcoholism, drug abuse, overly aggressive behavior, and personality clashes" ... I read that as being an ass ;)
I totally respect you guys for giving your honest opinions on all the great Megadeth songs. They are my all time favorite band and I regret to say I have never seen them live. I was planning to see them in Charlotte this summer, but I'm pretty sure that's cancelled now. Anyway, you guys are awesome and I enjoy watching your videos.
Sori is awesome! Vin, if you like chuggy metal man, have you checked out any Fear Factory? Their album Obsolete (1998) is one of the chuggiest albums I've ever heard, haha! Super badass. I would recommend the song Edgecrusher!
I was living in England and picked up the tape because I'd always liked Megadeth. Got back to the room, started listening to this song. "This sucks," I told my friend. "It's got no thrash to it." And then it hit that part (8:01 in your reaction) and I just lost it, thrashed all over the room, wrecking shit. Good times.
The first part of the song is about the IRA in Northern Ireland and the second half of the song is about the Punisher comic book character. Don't look now to Israel, it might be your homeland means don't think all holy wars are being fought in Israel, a holy war may be fought in your homeland, as well.
Dave Mustain got inspired to write this song after being on tour in Northern Ireland. At one of their concerts he said said something about this being for the "cause"(anarchy of the uk). This made protestants and catholics start fighting. The band did the rest of the tour in a bulletproof bus..
This song is two songs. The second part being about the Punisher comic series. The guitarist proved him self way before this song came out. Megadeth's first album came out in 1985.
You guys are awesome. Both of you are very intelligent and well educated on history. Megadeth is just awesome. Dave Mustaine is brutally honest and was pissed off back then.. He still makes great music.
I always liked the line “Next thing you know they’ll take my thoughts away” (Last line in the song). To me this song is all about the complexity of the riffs, transitions, and brilliance of the solos. I personally always like the faster and complex songs. I think the verses in the lyrics are mostly from the perspective of a mercenary/soldier but do kind of go in and out from that and some are more just general thoughts on the role of religion, leaders, and war. Megadeth has more a bluesy sound in their songs compared to other thrash bands. They also are always super complex with very difficult rhythm sections. Good reaction...and btw Sori IS awesome!
IMO, musically Megadeth is the superior band of the two. Possibly even more importantly, Dave writes material that I have always related to very easily. Dave wrote a lot about politics while James just wrote stuff that sounded badass but didn't really mean anything. Dave was making a statement, loud and clear , there was no mistaking how he felt. Peace Sells, Set the World Afire, Hook in Mouth, Holy Wars, Hanger 18, Dawn Patrol, Rust in Peace...Polaris, Ashes in Your Mouth, Architecture of Aggression... It just goes on and on. Dave was amazingly talented and being fired from Metallica inspired him a way that probably nothing else could have. He had something to prove after that. I don't blame Metallica though, I wouldn't want to have been around Dave during the 80's either. You should do Refuse/Resist by Sepultura.
Marco Esquandolas So, James writing lyrics pertaining to Biblical scripture doesn't mean anything? That's a silly & shortsighted comment. Plenty of Dave's lyrics are derived of risque double entendre, i.e; The Mechanics. That's his statement? Okay, then. 😏
I tend to agree. metallica lyrics tend to be (not always) just random stuff that sounds cool, and sounds metal. Megadeth lyrics tend to be more inteligent and important about things the author really cares about or feels about, politics religion. as a general statement Megadeth's lyrics are more meaningful than Metallica's. it's like one is an artist writing inspiration and the other is a lack luster 14 year old trying to be cool. once again, a generalization. there are some meaningful metallica lyrics, and there are some goofy Megadeth lyrics.
Thank you for correcting the lyrical errors at the end of the song. This album, this entire album from Megadeth was epic and will go down in history as one of the best.
Challenge accepted *finding good Porcupine Tree songs* Blackest Eyes or Ansethetize :) Not too fan of Porcupine either, but really like a few of the songs, and I love the drummer.
The first half of this song is about the conflicts in northern Ireland in the early 60's, the second half is about The Punisher, of the marvel comic books.
It's great to see education on display. Good reaction. To let you know, like I'm sure others will point out, the song is based in part on "The Punisher" comics.
The beginning of the song is about the religious war in Ireland, second half of the song was written from his love for the comic book "The Punisher". You should check out Down- Lifer or Swan Song
Wow awesome thank you for the reply it is a full spectrum song chorus bars Bridges another speed metal song that is been overlooked for a long time comes from Marty Friedman and Jason Becker album speed metal Symphony cacophony
Not sure if anyone has already mentioned this but the second part of the song is actually about the Marvel Character The Punisher. The 80s version and his origin story. They killed his wife and family.
The second half is actually a different song based on the Marvel comic The Punisher - in a nutshell its about a war veteran who becomes a vigilante against organized crime after they murdered his family because they witnessed a mob murder
