I can see why some people might take issue with So Far's production, but I like the eerie, haunting quality that it lends the material. On this track especially, I feel like it actually greatly benefits the song. The remastered version is totally lifeless in comparison, to my ears at least. Looking forward to Megadeth Mondays!

The thing you're picking up on in the riffs is "chromatic" ascension. The notes are rising a semi-tone at a time against a steady backing note. Very perceptive to pick up on it. Another song that uses this to great effect is The Call of Ktulu.

So Far So Good is their all around best album, it's just so well-written and recorded. I find it warmer and easier on the ears than Rust in Peace, which is more cold and clinical sounding.
@ryanjacobson2508
@ryanjacobson2508 2 года назад
The Max Norman productions from the early 90's actually used that era's equivalent of auto-tune. Norman confirmed it in recent interviews. Those albums technically sound great, but I don't think that style suits the band as well as the much grittier sound that their 80's producers gave them

Based on the Ibanez bass that was shown in the studio and Dave confirming the new bassist was there the list of likely bass players has been narrowed down to two. Steve DiGiorgio from Testament or Felipe Andreoli from Angra. Both would be phenomenal choices and probably the best bass player Megadeth has ever had from a technical perspective. Personally, I hope it's Felipe.

5:00 it's the chromatic ascending of the notes, that means they are ascending one semitone higher and higher, I hope it's explained well. Some fun facts: Mary Jane is based on a legend about a witch that lived near David Ellefson hometown, you can even find the tombstone of her on the internet. And Dave considers the 13 as his lucky number because it was present in important moments of his life.

Take a listen to ICED EARTH, maybe start w the INCURRUPTIBLE album- there are so many. Just to mention, one of the founding members of the band was arrested for participating in the Jan 6 protests at the capital. Several members of the band left and the band is currently inactive from what it seems. Aside from that, Iced Earth is one of my favorite bands and I hardly see any reaction videos on their work. MegaDeth Monday is like taking a trip down Memory Lane for me. My metalhead friends and I cruising the northeastern Alabama/northwestern Georgia backroads with the stereo blasting, no particular destination in mind...it was the journey that mattered, the desire for adventure that urged us onward. There are some great songs on So Far...So Good...So What but (as you mentioned) not the best sound production. Edit: Man, I hadn't even considered Michael Anthony for MegaDeth. Not gonna lie, though, I'm more than a bit intrigued by the idea. As you said, he's definitely a veteran when it comes to working with big ego bandmates. He's professional, a really talented bassist/back up vocalist, and a hard worker. Hmmm 🤔

Those early Megadeth albums in their original, raw versions will never be truly replicated cos the technology was different... analog tapes, 80's production values... Nowadays, u got digital files, pro tools and crystal clear audio. Ur right, production could've been better in '88, but it's kinda what represents the 80's thrash metal era. Plenty of polished Megadeth albums after that...

Steve DiGiorgio is a monster bassist...one of my favorites, as well. Saw him with Death on their Individual Thought Patterns tour way back when at the Masquerade in Atlanta, Georgia. Not sure how his and Dave's personalities would mesh, though. DiGiorgio likes to have a good time while Mustaine doesn't even allow band members to smoke cigarettes (at least, he didn't when Al Di Meola joined). Plus, I don't think Steve would let Dave try and push him around.

I seen an article suggesting he would be a good fit. I thought so too because of something another poster said about Michael Anthony. Mike may be good but he might not have the stamina to play in a metal band like Megadeth since they are nothing like Van Halen.

SFSGSW is their best album in more ways than one. I think the production sounds more punk rock than their next few albums. I think that adds well to the chaos that surrounded this album's creation. I loved the album 13 even though it had a few tracks that were generic throwaways (mainly the song "Guns, Drugs, and Money") The song Sudden Death is vicious and was the final song on either rock band or guitar hero. I know that "Sudden Death" will be right up your alley. Very underrated album. Much of it was B-Sides like songs from Video Game soundtracks (examples: "Sudden Death" "New World Order" and "Never Dead") and older songs that Dave finally finished writing (like "Millennial of the Blind") There were also plenty of new songs made specifically for the album also

A couple of suggestions and a comment. These are three songs I think you still need to check out. The first two are covers, Anarchy in the UK (Sex Pistols) and No More Mr. Nice Guy (Alice Cooper) from that Shocker Soundtrack. The other is the version of A Tout Le Monde featuring Cristina Scabbia (The United Abominations version, not the original). Finally, you might want to read Dave’s autobiography Mustaine: A metal memoir. It covers up to 2009 and may give you more insight into the band, as well as into Dave, who is a very deep and complex individual.

As long as Michael Anthony has his act together, I think he might be a good choice. It is just that he was a serious alcoholic in his Van Hahlen days. Although Dave had much more serious addiction issues than that, his alcoholism started his slide. Metallica will tell you that is why they kicked him out (Alcohol overuse) and Dave even admits to some issues. I think, it could be great though. Michael is close enough in age to have similar influences and really cut his teeth in the LA rock scene like Dave did. Plus, it was a Van Hahlen bass part being played in the apartment below him ( The bass intro to Runnin With the Devil) that introduced Dave to David Ellefson, so it would be a full circle kind of thing.

The situation with Ellefson was unfortunate and I think both sides made drastic errors. That said, I can see it from Daves point of View and from a business perspective it had to be done, with the covid situation the last thing you want is that type of press overshadowing your first album in 5 years especially given the struggles it has had already eg Dave overcoming cancer. So all in all it's a tough one. Honestly I think they could do worse than bringing back James LoMenzo who was the bassist on the 13 track. I've heard names like Steve DiGeorgio from Testament being floated around and that would make sense. Or maybe the dude from Angra, Kiko's old band as he already has some chemistry there. Either way I'm sure they'll get the right man for the job. A few notes on the 13 album. I remember reading before it came out an article here in the UK in metal hammer magazine. Dave was on the cover promoting the 13 album and it was originally planned to be their final album and 13 was the 13th track on their 13th album. The song you heard is an autobiographical song which describes Daves life where he first learned guitar at 13 and describes how he felt that each album was another time when he had to put himself out there and 'go back to the well' and each album took a little part of him away. After disbanding the band in 2004 after his arm nerve injury, he eventually recovered and came back. After The System has failed, United Abominations, and Endgame, this album was written and recorded in a few short months in between tours and due to this they decided to save time and finish off demos from the Youthanasia sessions such as Millennium of the Blind and New World Order. Black Swan from the same album was a recording of a bonus track from the special edition of United Abominations. So after finishing up those unfinished songs and making a great comeback after the injury, Dave was thinking this would be his final album. That all changed when he heard the news that Jeff Hanneman from Slayer had died, which make him realise that he needed to make as much music as he could while he was still around which is why they're still going today. Overall very interesting backstory to the album and hopefully when you get round to it will help you appreciate it that little bit more. Great content man thanks!
