Dave's grunting is actually the result of a rift in time when, in the year 1986, a young Dave Mustaine, fresh off the success of Peace Sells, was drinking at a bar when a wormhole appeared. Through said wormhole came the sound of "Crush 'Em." All the younger Mustaine could do was grunt in disgust at the sounds he heard, and when he found out the responsible party was in fact HIS OWN BAND IN 13 YEARS, he growled in anger. And with that, the wormhole closed. Either that or he ate some Taco Bell too fast and got the shits.

You know what's a better Megadeth alt-metal album? Cryptic Writings. Seriously, like that album has that very 90's flair to it, with some slower tracks like "I'll Get Even" and some big ballads like "Trust" and "Use the Man". But it also knew when to let loose and just be ball-crushingly heavy, like on "She Wolf". And the material is top to bottom much more engaging.
@Mandilore89

@drpibisback7680
@drpibisback7680 3 года назад
@MrRantingRandy Totally agree that Dave must bear some fault here. Dave fired a lot of band members before. If he hadn't been into "Marty's idea," I can't imagine he wouldn't have just dropped Marty and found a new guitarist. This is the work of someone who really doesn't know how to write alt rock but who really wants that alt radio money, not someone who wants to make a good metal album in spite of his sideman's bad ideas.

This album reminds me of being on top of the world. Risk (99) - father diagnosed with cancer. Hot gf gone and best buds never bought the album. One of the worst times of my life. IMO, and I am speculating, two things happened that resulted in this album. A) the 90s. It was a hard decade for metal. With the rise of grunge, glam metal literally died overnight and became instantly uncool which didn't help the over all metal genre. And then as hip-hop and alternative music became mainstream, it was even harder for the genre which seemed old. Only the best of the rock and metal bands survived this decade, and even for them it was a decade of uncertainty. I can see why they wanted to try new things. B) Dave let Marty Friedman indulge his artistic ramblings with this album. Now we all know Marty is a bad ass guitar player, but he has even said "Megadeth is gun metal gray, and there's more colors out there." But like many virtuouso class musicians, they don't always excel in the composing of songs that people want to hear.

@aikoyumi4014
@aikoyumi4014 7 лет назад
1: I didn't mind this song, but it really drags on and on.... Not a good start for this album, I'm afraid. 2: Yeah, this song is pretty bad. 3: Okay, this _does_ lead to something interesting. However..... 4: .....it shoots itself in the foot. I can't believe they used this to promote Universal Soldier: The Return. Not to say that the movie was any good to begin with. 5: This song was terrible. It's monotonous and bland. 6: I have no words for this... 7: It's boring and forgettable. 8: Ditto for this track. 9: I think I'm gonna need some ecstasy for listening to this. 10: Great. A reminder of St. Anger. 11: Yeah, I almost fell asleep on this track, too. 12: Alright, this could've worked. But, it was wasted potential. Megadeth's Risk was anything _but_ a risk. It was too boring to be enjoyable, even in an ironic sense. While I personally like Megadeth (Dystopia was a great example), but Risk was something I willingly wouldn't go back to.

You can judge me all you want, but I love this album. I love every single Megadeth record for a simple reason. They're all different and unique. I always hear people complaining about the guitar work on this album but honestly it's pretty good, especially when played on an acoustic guitar. The melodies are interesting, the vocals are pretty good, the bass gives a lot of depth and the whole album has this atmospgere that just appeals to me. I really do see why people dislike this album, but personally I really enjoy it. Diversity, in my opinion, is what makes Megadeth so good. Their tracks never sound the same. They all have interesting ideas in them. Some bands really lack this, and that's why I can never listen to them for a long time. Some famous examples include AC/DC and Cannibal Corpse. (Also, Dream Theater, not quite on the level of the previous bands, but still really repetetive.)

Its funny. As much shit as Metallica gets for "selling out" and being radio rock nothing they have done comes close to the pop record that Risk is. Actually, when I go back and listen to Load it isn't something I would expect from a band that was forcibly trying to sell out in the 90s. You would think you'd hear more nu-metal, pop-punk, post grunge, etc. Instead there's lots of mid-tempo, blues flavored tracks. And quite a few are long. Hell, even its first single, "Until it Sleeps", is not an obvious "hit".

I've come to appreciate Risk as a "Not-Megadeth" album over the years, but it is still at the very bottom of the discography for all of their albums alongside Super Collider and Cryptic.

The reason Goldberg looked like that in the video for Crush 'Em (and why Jean-Claude Van Damme is also it it) was because the song was part of the soundtrack to Universal Soldier: The Return. The movie isn't all that good by the way.
@christopolousvonsnuffolaup7420
you have got to be a fan from the beginning and a musician to dig his groove man.everything he's done is genius and he did risk for himself.every one of his albums shares with his fans his journey through life,changes in his tastes,experimenting with his craft etc. I personally love all of his music.

I think Risk is underrated. I’ve been a massive Megadeth fan since I was 19, and there are just outstanding songs here. They are not towards the beginning of the album, they’re buried secretly at the end. I think “Risk” gets sold short a bit too much.

Breadline just feels like a watered down Livin' on a Prayer without anything that made that song awesome and changed to be about a homeless man

I actually like this album, it's incompareble to "rust" so if that's what you expect you will be dissapointed. However just on it's own, its a really fun album.

Considering Super Collider came out two years ago, Risk is Reign in Blood compared to that garbage. :P
@Kamapixel
@Kamapixel 8 лет назад
+Gonzo Lewd Not even close lol Super Collider, as disappointing as it was, at least it has a couple actually good songs. It has some terrible ones like Super Collider, Burn, and the vocals of All I Want (I really like the main riffing), but it's leaps and bounds better than Risk. Both are near the bottom though in terms of Megadeth albums for sure..
@Kittylover074
@Kittylover074 8 лет назад
Maybe I'm biased because Super Collider is Dave at his absolute worst as a vocalist.
@Kamapixel
@Kamapixel 8 лет назад
***** Even then, musically, Super Collider is way above Risk on the majority of the songs.
@Kittylover074
@Kittylover074 8 лет назад
Not really. The instrumentation sounds like commerical hard rock, just like Risk only more boring and forgettable.
@Kamapixel
@Kamapixel 8 лет назад
A couple of the songs maybe, but Kingmaker? Don't Turn Your Back? It has an actual pulse to it compared to Risk, even with the hard rock songs. Not denying the hard rock stuff, it's a big part why I don't like the album, but it's hardly as dull as Risk. This is really not disputable, there is simply a lot more going on with the album in comparison lol

It would be a total under statement to say that they sold out, but that’s exactly what they did on Risk. Also, you made that joke about Lulu, but I do think that that would make a really good Regretting the Past Episode. I hope you decide to do one on that album at some point.

When Dave is groaning he is either trying out to be an extra for the Walking Dead, purring like a cat, or trying to replicate the noises you make when you wake up.

I can appreciate what they were trying to do with Crush 'Em, it makes sense to want a sports anthem, and it is better to see it that way than to see it as a Megadeth song. The real problem with Crush 'Em is how the producer made the 'crowd' vocal sound, it kills the purpose of the song with the effects because it doesn't sound like an actual crowd. 'We Will Rock You' has a multitude of human voices chanting the chorus that sounds like a multitude of human voices, as does 'Rock You' by Helix and other songs created specifically to be stadium chants. The chanting makes the actual crowds at the stadium feel like they should chant. The Crush 'Em crowd vocal sounds like a digital effect trying to sound like a crowd, by not sounding like an actual crowd it's not going to have the same effect on an actual crowd.

The best part about this video , is whenever we go over a song without a music video... You play live footage of the classic lineup playing WAY better songs... That's definitely why I was never able to fully sit through this while driving ... I just end up putting on Peace Sells or Rust..

Crush 'Em and its music video wasn't just for Goldbergs entrance. That was just a side thing. The song was used in the film Universal Soldier: The Return, which not only came out the same you as Risk, but also starred Goldberg along side JCVD. I'd have thought that was pretty obvious from the cyborg style make-up/costume used in the music video.

Hey there Mr Luke. I am a new subscriber to your channel and I truly enjoyed all of your "regretting the past" series videos. I am putting this comment here to just make one clarification on this specific video for the megadeth risk album; the song "crush em" was also part of the "universal soldier 2" soundtrack and that's the reason why Goldberg and Jean-Claude Van Damn were in the video. Mustain wrote this specific song for his son's hockey team as an "arena anthem". Just letting everyone know. Keep up the awesome work with your videos and stay heavy!
