exquisite love song. But some obscure lyrics. I don't get all the poetry: which cld mean their song-writing is a bit obtuse. Or it could be just me being thick. Assuming the latter .... so the lover of the past year has gone. Not just left, but passed away - " there below the wintry ground". But is the beloved really dead, or just in a coma, with the singer maintaining a vigil ? - " Wide awake, waiting for a sign". Or is s/he just hoping against hope that the lover will recover from the death sleep?.But if it's a death, was it perhaps a merciful release, perhaps from madness ? - " the sun gave the moon, said sleep now restless one " . Suicide, a release from the torture of madness, that being the dawn after the night ? And why the foxes ? Foxes are not part of my country's rural tradition. We have them, but they're all feral. So I don't understand the foxes line. Whatever the meaning, its obscurities ( to meat least), I have fallen immensely for this song, and learnt it. Clawhammer banjo, of course !!
