Right? I was nervous, honestly, but I’m so impressed. She’s spot-on, and you can tell she has so much more to say. I would listen to her break this movie down for hours. My one note: While she definitely got some references I didn’t get, I didn’t “have to know XYZ” to appreciate the movie. I look forward to criticism and analysis that educates and enriches my experience, but I was able to enjoy - love - MEGALOPOLIS without any of that. I really hope people see it. I think seeing it for yourself and realizing that you’re not as ignorant and useless as the world tries to tell you to feel is a powerful experience that truly needs to happen in the theater. In some regards, I think MEGALOPOLIS is better for people who aren’t busy reference-spotting. It could be argued they/we are actually having a purer experience.
It's great to watch you enjoying the experience of a movie and don't giving an F about what others say. Cloud Atlas and Sucker Punch were those types of movies for me 😂❤ I know they're widely hated on, and I understand it, but that won't shake the feeling I got from them. 🎉🎉
I absolutely loved Cloud Atlas, I got very emotional about it and bullied people to watch it and was actually upset they didn't love it too haha. Now Sucker Punch, I'm a life long CG lover so I really loved how the greatest dance scenes were actually visual effects orgasms. I argued with a lot of people online that the movie was not a waste of time. However, recently I watched it again and I just found I fast forwarded to the action scenes and I was done and really only that first one with the giant samurai warriors was the only thing I still enjoyed. So perhaps it was a moment in time where it worked but, ah well. No idea about this megalopawhateveritis. Nothing about it makes me want to see it but I'm glad Grace loves it. Maybe its a bit like how I loved the CG set pieces in Sucker Punch, they spoke to me. There are themes and set pieces in this movie that turn Grace onto it. I care nothing about Rome or films about Royals
@@mahmudmurad4655 how elitist of you, you probably fit right in with the cast of this movie. I've already commented I liked both those movies, I've been watching movies all my life and while sc-fi is my jam, I think I've had a lot of film experience even spending several years learning to animate and make my own short films. Never judge someone for the movies they love. Some of us have guilty pleasures that defy explanation and can be for so many reasons why they might love something widely considered as trash. There is no such thing as a movie being an insult to another movie. That's all in your head bro.
@@ClayMann right, if someone asked me what's my favourite movie I could probably say ''rules of attraction'', it even defies my own expectations about a good movie, it doesn't have strong visuals or complex plots, it has nothing to do with the genres and types of movies that I generally like, and characters are very problematic but for some reason it made an impact on me.
Honestly at this point I don't even care if it's a bit of a mess I'm really stoked to see it. Ambitious passion projects have been some of my favorite films in general. At least it's someone's actual unique vision and not the 50th entry in a generic corporate franchise.
sadly a lot of people will only see movies if their friends are also seeing it. Its where the idea of the guilty pleasure came from. Movies you watch without revealing to others you actually watched that. I've got a thing for cheap action movies with a sci-fi leaning and some of the oldest black and white monster / alien movies. Forbidden Planet is one I've seen several times and loved it every time. But I don't mind telling others I like weird or badly reviewed movies. Some still do and that's a shame.
Depends on the movie's point. Instead of examining the elite vs. society, examine why that society props up the elite. People are the value, not the money. But they have effectively switched it and given the value to the money.
Yet again, another piece of content / art that I wasn’t going to see, until grace suggested seeing. Hoping to see it up at universal studios Hollywood this weekend. Thanks G
This was a huge plot twist. Megalopolis was fantastic, wish everyone could get behind it but I understand the hate given its surreal and cutting-edge nature that forgoes fundamental aspects of usual storytelling.
I think that’s a shame and a missed opportunity. It’s a weird experiential movie and has a much better chance of working on you if you see it in a theater
@@benjihudson2768 But nowadays people don’t want to go to a movie if they don’t exactly know what it is about and what formula it will follow. They want trailers that give a brief summary of the entire movie🍻
I've not been sure what to make of this movie, I watched about 10 seconds of the teaser when it came out and thought it looked awful, avoided it ever since, but the ads have been popping up on RU-vid all the time and the more I see the more intrigued I get, now really contemplating giving it a shot. I think instead of a conventional blockbuster it should be looked at as an arthouse film, I love a trippy arthouse film, Under the Skin, Mulholland Drive and Spring Breakers were epic and The Tree of Life is one of my top 5 films of all time. I probably won't LOVE this film but I might sill enjoy the spectacle. Glad you liked it, that bodes well.
Wow Grace… I’ve heard so much about this film, it’s a must watch, one review said ‘if you love it you’re right, if you hate it, you’re also right’. I can’t wait for this.
I remember when she literally-I’m not making this up-said The Accountant was one of the best movies she’s ever seen. Really? It wasn’t _that_ good. Some of her movie opinions are genuinely baffling to me.
We’re in a bad era for movies. Audiences reject films that are challenging and provocative, and instead just want something “enjoyable”. Megalopolis might go too far, but the movie is screaming for us to challenge the way we look at cinema I also watched the movie in a near sold out imax showing, and my crowd at least was enjoying it.
@@charlesw4727 Literally costs me $7 to see a movie in the theatres, every time I want to see it. People cope so hard about it costing too much. There's NO CHEAPER WAY TO WATCH A MOVIE unless you pirate.
Just wanted to say I really appreciate you discussing your evolving perspective on and appreciation for experimental art, Grace. As a big fan of BTT, it's always made me a bit sad when you jab directors for making out-there, experimental films--like Ari Aster with Beau is Afraid--but I'm so glad to see you come around a bit to these more surreal & artistic movies as an experimental filmmaker myself and as someone who has always loved when cinema is truly ambitious and boundary-pushing. Great review of the film btw, I loved Megalopolis too and can't wait to see it again!!
Yes I knew Grace was smart, but I wasn't exactly expecting such an enthusiastic, articulate review for this kind of movie from one of youtube's big screaming heads. Proof that this movie will find the audience it deserves and vuce versa.
Also when she says, “I’m not a music person. I don’t know/like music.” I’m like, “Grace, honey, you are obviously not giving yourself enough credit here.” You can’t love film this much and be oblivious to music. And when she talks about music or the modern art installation at MOMA, I’m almost “proud” to see this person I parasocially know and admire broadening her horizons and deepening her self-confidence. Grace consistently feels like such a regular person, with lots of authenticity and, forgive me, grace.
the whole call and response thing reminds me of Truffaut's Fahrenheit 451, with the interactive tv programmes that Montag's wife loved to watch so much
People expect a reviewer to not review a movie because the movie is bad? 😂 I like a good “bad” movie review just as much as a good review for a movie I like. Besides how can a reviewer know it’s bad without seeing it?
I saw it last night and I have to say it was CAMP. Would I say it’s a good movie? No. Did I love it and was I thoroughly entertained? Absolutely!!! The movie felt like it had a hat on a hat feeling. Like it was commenting on itself in real time. I really enjoyed it
I have not walked out of a movie in decades, but this film changed that. I simply could not get through it. A total miss as far as I'm concerned. A total waste of my time.
I will say I did not have the reference points you perfectly pointed to in this review. Honestly they made me appreciate this film even more. I did however have my spiritual background which made me love this movie. When I was walking out most people were laughing and shaking their heads. It made me sad to realize that society might not be progressing in the ways we hope. This movie could have done a lot of good. It was raised important conversations on consciousness, moving forward, and time! I can only hope that this movie becomes more respected as “time” ;) goes on. Thanks Grace for another great review and recommending this movie during your livestream!
There is a “tin-foil hat” conspiracy side of me that casually wonders whether this is motivating the gaslighting that MEGALOPOLIS is “an avant- garde arthouse mess”, when it is actually a very straightforward and very entertaining blockbuster. It just is also about something, and that something is you and me and us - the something nearly ~all~ movies were about before they were all about franchises and branding. I don’t know. I don’t feed conspiratorial thoughts, but it baffles me how successful this “weird” narrative is. All you have to do to disprove it is see the movie, and it does kinda feel like some people really want to make sure most people simply never see it at all.
I wish we had more risky original films made like Megalopolis & Babylon & I think the future of cinema looks bright next year with Mickey 17 & with Sinners!
It’s fascinating on how the different bad and good reactions for this movie totally echoes the reaction 2001 a space odyssey and also blade runner had from critics and most of all, audiences, when those movies came out and most of the critics were saying exactly the same things about, atmosphere, pacing, acting, lack of coherent plot, etc. So … I can bet this movie will totally be looked at in a different way twenty years from now. I haven’t seen it, but visually it reminds me of my all time favorite comics artist here in Europe, Schuiten, look for his graphic novels álbuns , it’s like Coppola read all of them too and tried to go for the same style.
Off subject, but Grace why no Ballerina trailer? It looks so good & even have Keanu in the trailer. It even explains how a many women may be smaller, & weaker than “big men” but need to learn how to adapt & cheat to make the playing field equal. I have to say, I think it might be a well written, good action film.
For some reason, it's not at the local AMC this weekend, where I'll be seeing Transformers. It's at the larger suburban AMC. The sci-fi angle interests me.
I didn’t know until 2 days ago that The Penguin moved to Sundays? Dammit. It’s interesting how this movie is getting review bombed but Coppola probably directed the two greatest films ever made and he still gave us The Conversation, Apocalypse Now, and The Outsiders.
Imagine that, Coppala made a masterpiece. You left out the most glaringly obvious film history comparison, Metropolis. A story of the class struggle and overwhelming disparity between them as well as a loss of hope for the future.
This movie was such a slog. Poor narrative, half baked ideas, pretention masquerading as philosophical break through. Did get a kick out of a character getting killed by the tiniest bow and arrow in the world.
I'm glad someone else appreciated it. Sadly, in the theatre I was in, only a few people were watching. At the end, there was only me watching. Everyone else had left.
Yeah of course Grace, this is cinematic tour de force, great art in the same museum with other timeless pieces like Catwoman and Battlefield Earth 👏🏼 👏🏼 Bravissimo
Shia LeBeouf inflicted literal Biological Warfare on innocent people. He is the absolute kiss of death deal breaker of this film. I don't want to see any film that tries to propagate that monster. He RUINED people's lives, he didn't get "Cancelled" for a bad take on Twitter, he hurt people, physically, irreparable damage.
There are lots of interesting movie in cinemas this week. After watching The Substance, Maple Leaf Dreams, Bad Genius US remake etc I'd really like to watch Megalopolis next.
I see where you’re coming from, but the words I’d use are “unabashed” and “unafraid”. Perhaps “uncompromising”, but I feel it leaves plenty of space for interpretation so that word feels misleading. I just thought where most movies these days try to hide all their messaging, often clumsily and unsuccessfully, MEGALOPLIIS decided to just very transparently pose its questions, but allow the audience the freedom to contemplate them and arrive at our own conclusions. Even while the film has a very strong point of view. I really love it.
It's definitely preachy, but people who like the movie aren't likely to say that, and people who hate it might not even consider preachiness a flaw and are also not likely to mention it.
This reminded me so much of Grace’s Ad Astra review. A movie that was critically panned that she really connected with deeply. I was right there with her on Ad Astra, I thought that film was brilliant and totally underrated, so hopefully I’m right there with her on Megalopolis.
I don’t think you “have to” know any of that to enjoy it, but all of them would add something. Ayn Rand in particular is a huge influence, and it’s still genuinely hard for me to be sure exactly where Coppola lands in responding to Rand. I mean this as a compliment, not a criticism.
Are we all just going to ignore the very real problems that happened on the set of this movie??? Francis walking around groping & kissing the female extras on set?
I’m not ignoring it. I’m ignorant about it. I’ve seen headlines in passing, but I did honestly ignore it because there’s been so much sensationalism around this project. But I’ll look into it now. So your comment wasn’t wasted. At least one person is going to look this up because you posted. I bet that actually will read as sarcastic snark to some people; I’m glad I re-read it. It’s so sad meanness has become a way to gain clout with so many people. But I’m completely serious. I was in kind of a comment rabbit hole. I’m gonna stop now and look this up, because you and one other person mentioned some issues with bad behavior behind the scenes. Thank you, I guess. I enjoyed the movie, but I don’t want to champion something that hurt people in real life.
This and Trap are the worst movies of the 2024, never seen such bad acting only Aubrey Plaza comes out of this mess looking good, I would like to know who the film is made for....
This was an incohesive mess. There were moments of beauty with bad cgi mixed in. There were good premises and themes but they weren't fleshed out. My theater and myself were literally lol at the last 20 mins and not in a good way. There were times I really wanted to leave. 4/10
Once again, I'm afraid it's the people who keep btchng about "the same regurgitated remakes and franchise sequels" that are gonna complain that "no one asked for this".
This movie wasn't created to be a mass-appealing one, but it's not a bad film at all. The problem is a lot of people label movies as "trash" if they don’t like or don't understand them. They think movies should only be about entertainment, which is just one purpose of films-definitely the most popular and profitable, but not the only one. Movies can be art, educational, social commentary, or just pure fun. But today’s audiences often expect them to just be fun escapes, nothing more. As someone who studied film, I know that movies have always been a mix of things since the start of cinema. I’m pretty sure many modern viewers would watch many classic films (from Soviet silent films to French New Wave to Kurosawa) and label them as "snoozefest" or "trash."
This is one of the most pretentious review I have ever seen. To the point of instead insipiring to watch the film, it actually kills the little will I had to watch it because it clearly wasn't made for me to see it.
4 people walked out of mine but i thought it was alright. I loveddddd the messaging behind the movie but the execution made my eyes/brain hurt at some points.
