Catcher in the Rye is a juvenile male Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who fell out of a tree in front of a MOP.
He was mildly concussed and a bit sooky (emotionally needy), but settled down to recover after being crooned at by Maggie who provided her usual bladder relaxation and de-stressing services.
Poor little love was very quiet for a few days then rebounded and became a normal little batty, going to creche and being released through the release aviary with other juveniles.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).

Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
Here’s Jenny’s email.

I don’t think that Hollywood ever saw a fruit bat/mega bat. If they had, we’d have gotten cute stories of flying puppies. Their bats look like micros, and the vampire bat is a micro bat.

I started out with the premise that I was going to release all the animals after their time in care; if you start out with that expectation, then you don't treat them as pets, just as temporary darlings in your care. I loved Ditto so much (my first baby), that I said to my mentor - how will I ever let him go, I love him so much. And she said; don't worry by the time he's ready to go you'll be glad to see the back of him. AND I WAS. He climbed the bookshelves at night and peed on the books, he flapped like crazy and tried to climb my fan in my bedroom in the middle of the hottest night of the year, so I had to turn it off. He peed copiously everywhere, belly flopped onto the mess under his airer and dragged it off onto the carpet, and basically wasn't a good housemate. He was independent, wilful and demanding, and though I loved him, it was time for him to go to creche to be buddied with other orphans so he could learn to be a batty again and be released. And it was perfect and he thrived on the next stage of his life on his journey to release.

@@Megabattie 😂 Oh dear! It's funny but it's not, because your feelings are involved, and this poor wee soul you posted about today did indeed make me wonder how you managed those emotions. It's pretty difficult when they are so cute and sassy!!!! I instantly fell for this little guy and I wasn't even there. I have so many questions about the bats and birds you have living there Meg. How did you come to get involved in their care if you don't mind my asking? .🇨🇦

@@THISISBEAR If you don't have a space where the bats can be separate from you, it's like sharing a house with a teenage son who doesn't believe in bathing or changing his clothing, is up all night, never cleans his room, is noisy and demanding and has hooks on every limb and finger and toe tip. And bites. When they're ready and independent and you've done your job right, then they're happy healthy and confident and ready to join the rough and tumble of creche, and it feels really good to let them go (and see the back of them).

@@THISISBEAR I joined wildlife rescue to care for parrot chicks in the spring chick season, and somehow I accidentally ended up doing bats exclusively. My vet said it would be better if I didn't do wild parrots because my birds might get sick from wild birds in my home unless there was a quarantine space, but I should do possum joeys because I had time and not very much space; I thought that sounded exciting, but when I did the basic rescue course, they said - with possum joeys, you feed, change and put them back in your pouch, you don't play with them, you don't talk to them and turn them into pets, you feed, change and put them back. They are solitary animals and need to remain solitary. I thought that sounded a bit like work. The next section was bats, and they said: not only can you love the babies, you HAVE TO love them. Bats are colony animals and have great social intelligence; their mums are really tactile and loving, and they need lots of interaction and tactile caring. So I somehow ended up doing batties exclusively

They wink a lot - it's more a slow one sided blink so they've always got one eye on you, which is a very "prey" thing to do in the presence of a predator (us) with forward facing eyes.

Hah, I never read the book; in fact, I only read 1 book in high school from the set works, the first one, which was Day of the Triffids, which, btw, I had finished reading before I got home on the day we were given the book. The rest were boring so I didn't read them and just listened in class so I could spout out all the analysis and turn it into an essay. I read a lot, but if I don't like the book I won't read it; life is too short to waste on reading things you aren't enjoying.

What do baby bats smell like? I keep imagining, like, popcorn or something. Y'all keep mentioning that the lil ones smell nice, and that the grownup boys are... pungent, lol.
@Megabattie
@Megabattie 7 дней назад
Baby flying-foxes smell quite sweet. Blacks and greys smell different. Grey babies have a soft sweet kind of vanilla smell with an overlay of musk like those pink musk lollies (candy). And they have a sort of baby powder smell though we don’t use baby powder. To me it’s a very baby smell and I go weak at the knees when I smell it. I wish I could bottle it. Black babies have a fruitier smell but it’s also sweet. I don’t associate Spectacled FF babies with any particular smell. Little Red babies smell a bit like sweet mild curry; some people describe it like tacos. As breeding season ramps up, the boys bulk up to look impressive for the girls, and also become commensurately more stinky as their hormones and pheromones swing into full mating season glory. Adult Grey males have a distinct pong (that’s an Aussieism for a not necessarily pleasant strong smell). The smell is acrid and catches in the back of your throat. Adult Black males have a less offensive (to me) pong which is fruitier with an overlay of burnt smell. It’s quite penetrative, more so than Greys I think (which I found when I refrigerated a body next to food in a freezer and the food ended up smelling and tasting like black male bat). I can’t really describe Little Red or Speccie FF smells or compare them with a particular smell, except Little Reds often have a slightly curry or taco whiff to them occasionally.
