Imagine waking up in ICU, with tubes everywhere, not knowing what happened, not remembering where your newborn baby was, and not understanding where you were…… or why you were there. That’s exactly what happened to Meghan Jolliffe who was heavily sedated following a most- feared - and extremely rare complication of childbirth, Amniotic Fluid Embolism, or AFE. While AFEs are extremely rare - occurring in approximately one out of every 100,000 births - they are the leading causes of maternal death in the United States. Estimated fatality rates vary widely - up to 80 percent among mothers and 65 percent among infants still in the womb during an AFE.
