A woman who has rejected her family - infamous for its hateful fundamentalism - is interviewed on the Freedom From Religion Foundation’s “Freethought Matters” TV show this Sunday.
Megan Phelps-Roper is author of the book "Unfollow: A Memoir of Loving and Leaving the Westboro Baptist Church." She bade goodbye to the church, founded by her grandfather Fred Phelps, in 2012 and now educates on topics related to extremism, religious extremism and how to communicate across ideological divides.
“I’d spent more than two decades of my life on this Earth, targeting people and antagonizing people, believing that it was the right thing to do - and believing that I was showing love to people in doing so,” she tells “Freethought Matters” co-hosts Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor about her “epiphany.” “Suddenly, it felt impossible to come to terms with the harm that we had wrought. It was like, and I’ve used this analogy before, like cradling a beautiful jewel in your hand, and then suddenly it turns to ash and dust, and realizing that you have dedicated your life to this thing.”

I’ve read that Fred Phelps moved to Topeka on May 17, 1954, the same day that the decision in Brown v. Bd. of Educ. was made public … and my birthday! Unfollow is a great book. The Phelps family is positively Shakespearean!

Terrific program....Without the pointless hate of religions throughout the world, maybe we could come closer to solving the real problems...on this grain of sand in the universe called earth. Eric Krebs

I remember the first time I saw Meagan on Tyra Bank's show. I know there are a number of explanations for this as a rationalist, but I feel like she looks so much prettier and happier, like she now radiates happiness and kindness as oppose to anger.

I remember on that show when Tyra asked why those girls kept believing these toxic beliefs and there was a lot of yelling and bible babble. But Meghan slipped for a moment when she said "It's the only life I've ever known". That was the real reason behind her blind belief. Once she learnt about other people and their lives, she left the church and now she's happier than ever.

Fascinating discussion. I just heard another youtube atheist saying "you can't convert the fundamentalists, so don't bother", but Megan's example is very interesting to consider.

The church is located near the intersection of 12th and Gage streets. I visited Topeka, KS and passed right by the church. The area is decent-looking.

Is it true that the WBC was 90% one family and 10% another? Very strange.

This smart girl (youthful woman now) isn't ready yet to casually say she is technically an evolved ape like all of us human primates. A proven fact we are unable to evolve away from as long as we have DNA almost exactly identical to chimps. This IS the overpopulated planet of the polluting apes. Personally I think all apes are fascinating as far as being inventive hunters and gatherers. And masters of adornment and purposeful camouflage.

What are Meagan's religious views now?
@johnwohara

On Twitter, she stated that her status is: "Atheist in that I don’t actively believe in such a power, because evidence doesn’t lead me there." And Wikipedia says that: "Phelps-Roper believes that the Bible is not written by people under God's inspiration. Instead, she thinks it is a document of people trying to understand how to be good, and that other philosophies were developed with the same goals. She has stated that she is a "believer in humanity" and in that way still classifies herself as a believer."

12:30 "They have corrupted themselves..." and therefore deserve to be whacked. That doesn't actually explain why you are picketing military funerals. In what way have they corrupted themselves?

Just what did Fred want the general public to do to gay people?

I don’t believe he wanted the general public to do anything to gay people. I believe he just felt it was his duty to inform them they were going to hell.

So it takes me a long time to forgive someone who said, believed, screamed, abused, protested at gay funerals and spewed such hatred towards what I am. Sorry isn't a cure all.

She doesn't want forgiveness. She is making ammends. Keep in mind she was born into this. I think most people would do the same thing if that's all they knew.
