MEGAN REACTS - Doctor Who - The Husbands of River Song (Live Reaction) 

I think Megan is wrong: this Doctor has more chemistry with River. He's more mature, more relaxed, and honestly closer in age in real life. Not that Matt and River weren't cute and flirty, but I just see River with Peter's doctor as more like marriage of love and equality.

Watching them in order like this is telling. River arguing that the Doctor can save her because he’s the Doctor and him saying he can’t hits different when you’ve just watched Hell Bent.

it’s nice to see that even though he can’t remember her, clara’s departure taught the doctor that he has to accept endings, meaning he could spend his final night with river. twelve deserved a fun adventure like this after the tragic turn of S9, and it ties up river’s bittersweet story perfectly. it’s a bit wacky, but it’s honestly one of my favourite christmas specials. twelve and river are perfect together.

This might be my favourite episode of this show, period. I adore Alex Kingston and I absolutely love the chemistry between her and Capaldi here. Someone else also mentioned it, but when the Doctor is giving River her Sonic, he scans her with it and that was actually him "Saving" her into it. That was the moment he "Saved" her. Also, Alex Kingston is the same age as the show, so however old the show was in whatever year a given episode is, that's how old she was as well. She's currently 57, but when they did this episode, which was in 2015, she was approximately 51 or 52, somewhere in that range. I love her so much and I still dream about her possibly popping in again sometime. Apparently both Alex and Jodie Whittaker are totally down with the idea of them interracting, but it's not terribly likely to happen any time soon. I so wish it would though. I'd watch a whole show of just River's adventures, and I know there are the audio dramas, but I'd love to see a spin off show for her. I'd watch it, hands down!

This is a wonderful story because it is an older Doctor who doesn’t have to hide who he is and can, openly and truly, *love* River. No secrets now. Just love.

I love all episodes with River. She always takes us on an emotional rollercoaster.

Easily the best TV Christmas special for me. Would be cool to see some 12/River adventures during those 24 years cos they definitely would've had some adventures in that time.

Love the parallel with the wedding of river song, 'you would suffer, more than everything in the universe?' 'no one here is worth losing you' I know I'm not quoting right lol, but like, it was my FIRST thought seeing that scene. Made me gasp. The change is so clear, just how much he's changed and how much he's grown to love her. "But always. when you need it the most... there is a Song" ;^;

This is the episode that finally sold me on Peter Capaldi as the Doctor.

Alex Kingston was actually 52 when this was filmed, not late forties! I can’t rank all of them but this is definitely my favourite christmas special, and one of my favourite episodes.

Right after watching this episode for first time, I immediately watching Forest of the Dead, when River mention her meeting with Twelve, which I kinda regret it because I cried. A lot. 😅 Also, I love that there's some part of "A Sad Man in the Box" (11th theme) playing in "Darilium" theme

27:15 Megan makes the same face as a child would when told to eat all of her broccoli before she gets to eat dessert - and then goes full turtle at the prospect of another Christmas special.

When you spend more time focused on your nails than the episode, you know Megan didn't enjoy it. Also I've been intrigued for months when Megan says she's too busy to watch TV at christmas, what does she do when the majority of us are just over eating and watching copious amounts of tv.

I thought they had natural chemistry immediately.

Steven Moffat is firing on all his romantic/farcical comedic cylinders on this one. The plot is all over the place, but that's par for the course for a fun Christmas episode! Alex Kingston was 52 when this episode was filmed.

River/ doctor do make a great couples I'd love to see their children and grandchildren later on future tv series if river return to show?

So there's a reference in here that Capaldi reminds her of her second wife. We know they both married Cleopatra, but what if her second wife were.... JODIE. I think it could work and I just want to see Alex and Jodie play off each other because it'd be just damned precious and awesome.

and so ends one of the greatest love stories in fiction. at least i think so.

I'll not drop a hint, but I think you'll like the next episode, Megan. It's quite enjoyable; and you're lucky you don't have to wait a year to see it! I mean, sometimes... This franchise... !!! So frustrating to wait so long for the next new episode!

Obviously the last 15/20 minutes are beautiful and emotional, and offer the perfect ending for River's time on the show, but I can't act like I don't enjoy the rest of the episode either. It's a big dumb Christmas pantomime, full of some great jokes, an over-the-top silly villain (played to hammy perfection by Greg Davies), and Peter Capaldi and Alex Kingston having an absolute blast through it all. I disagree with Megan's comments, I think the Twelfth Doctor has the best chemistry with River, largely because they feel like a mature married couple, in contrast to the more flirty relationship that she had with Eleven. It's a genuinely underrated episode, and one of my favourite Christmas specials. In terms of how I'd rank them: 1. A Christmas Carol 2. *The Husbands of River Song* 3. The Christmas Invasion 4. Don't worry Megan, next Christmas episode is a good one imo! I'm not a big fan of many of the Christmas specials either. I think my best 5 are: 1. The time of the Doctor 2. The Snowmen 3. The Husbands of River Song 4. (one you haven't seen yet - spoilers lol) 5. The Return of Doctor Mysterio

I was very thankful when Chibnall stopped with the Christmas special (I can credit him with the odd good decision:)) as I just never felt they were a good mix with the show and it was getting rather tired. I liked The Snowmen best for stylistic reasons, it's a great looking episode. I do think that the next one is one of the better ones as it doesn't feel especially Christmasy to me.

Complaining of another Christmas Special? At least she didn't have to wait a full year to see it.

If only this were the final episode, it would definitely be my favourite show. Alas, S10 is below average Moffat, and the Chibnall era is best forgotten. Best Xmas specials are Husbands and Last Christmas top, Christmas Carol next, all the rest far, far below.
