#AskGMBN Quick one here - grabbed a deal on a nearly new Minion DHR and a High Roller. DHR up front for the grip and High Roller out back for the rolling speed? Or would you go the other way round ? (By "a deal" I mean £20 for two tubeless ready tyres in nearly new condish). Cheers lads. PS - I think I know Henry's answer...

No question, but a tip for Hudson suffering from motion sickness! It could have something to do with his ears. I can become nauseous when driving up or down a mountain. When I keep eating a gum or carefully clear my ears like a diver does, than it's a lot less noticeable for me.

In regards to motion sickness question: I got the same thing when I got back in mountain biking and I was going down trails faster and more often. I kept looking 3 feet in front of the wheel and I started getting sick, I solved this by looking around the corners at where I was going to be. Fixed me ever since then.

As a chippy I have to deal with rounded off screw heads all the time. The first trick I use that gets round this issue 90% of the time is to get a bit of rubber (I use patches cut from old inner tubes) and putting it between the head and tip of the screwdriver / hex key then pushing it in as hard as possible while loosening the screw or bolt. I have also successfully used this to remove rounded off hex bolts on bikes.

Hudson- about the motion sickness. Possibly hyperventilating? You can get spasms in your hands by breathing too quickly as well as dizziness. I would agree, take a breather between runs and try to relax on your way down (song idea etc).

3:30 my best advice, try jamming a torx bit in there, theyre usually a bit tappered and they are basically an allen key already except slightly different sizing so its easy to find a bit thats just the right size. first, preferably just jam the bit in, then get a ratchet on that bad boy and slowly apply force until 1, it becomes unstuck or 2. you break something ( unlikey) just gotta jam the bit in there real good and it should be fine

3.30, the stripped Allen head bolt, take a larger Allen key and grind the first few millimetres of each side of one end at an angle so it is small enough to go into the rounded head, but eventually catches.

about the bolts being rounded off, sometimes you can make it work with a torques bit that a bit bigger than the allen size jam it in with a hammer then use that same bit allways when removing the bolt or change it, i rounded off the head on the front axle of my gambler dh20 and now i allways use the torques bit for one of the sides and an allen for the other, never rounded it again

I’m in the process of repainting my aluminum fully. Agree with Blake, I’ve done a few and the better prepared the frame is, the better your dust control the better the outcome. I would add though, be patient, use multiple light coats and give each the recommended drying time between coats. Check out ETOE or fatcreations for inspiration

@3.55 I think Blake means a Torx key ? Personally I'd use a left handed drill bit. Torx (or anything else) that spreads the fastener can create their own excess friction.
@FiveEars

On the stripped hex-head, use vice grips on the outer part of the bolt. You might have to break off some plastic to get purchase, but that'll give more leverage than a flathead.

Hammer a torques or multi spline tool into the hole usually removes damaged Allen bolts. Alternatively you can buy damaged screw remover tools, essentially a driver bit with a reverse threaded screw on the end, it drills into the damaged bolt then undoes it. Good luck

If you have an allen(Hex) screw that is striped, put a flat punch on the head and hammer it all around on top. The Hex pattern will be somewhat repaired. You will have to tap the allen key back in. Sometimes it's enough to be able to remove it.
@haven444
@haven444 5 лет назад
Another solution for a stripped hex bolt is to use the same hex wrench but put a paper towel over the end. This wont work if the bolt is completely stripped to round, but if it's just a little stripped it should give you enough grip to get it loose.

in the motionsickness problem do i personally think that it is down to the goggles. if they are just slightly splitting the ligh the wrong way can they make people either motion sick or get soar eyes after a while, either try getting other goggles or try with sun glasses and see if it makes a difference, can also be altitude as they said and can be fatigue which are both viable reasons and if you're really unlucky can it actually be problems with your balance center or balance nerve which may missfire and cause your motionsicknes.

#askGMBN I tend to go back and forth about whether or not a long travel 29er is the right bike for me. Currently, I'm riding a 120 mm 27.5 bike that is awesome on the climbs, but gets bumped around quite a bit on the descents. I love the playfullness of the wheel size and amount of travel, but I'm enticed with the idea of having more travel and longer wheels. The trails I ride in Utah aren't particularly chunky or technical and I'm worried more travel would be overkill. Thoughts? I've demoed the Rallon, Ripmo, Bronson, Slash, Mach 6, and Switchblade and I think I like the Ripmo the best!

#askgmbn Instead of a fatty for Mega why not try a 29+? I have a Trek Full Stache and it is a surprisingly good enduro bike. I have ridden some high end enduro race bikes and found the Stache is faster than any of them in loose sketchy conditions due to the big tires. It is fast in rocky conditions because the tires roll smoothly over rocks and retain momentum. It would rock the snowy sections of section of Mega and do well in the rocks and gravel. The trick to making it work is using good tire inserts that tame the tendency of big tires to squirm in turns and have too much bouncy rebound. I am using the XL size Vittoria Airliner. I use the stronger Bontrager SE5 3.0 tire rather than the stock XR4. I spend a lot of time smashing through North East USA rock gardens at speed without any failures on that setup. The stock rims are too flexy for high speeds so I replaced with Line 40 carbon rims. In case you are wondering I'm not sponsored by Trek. I just think the Stache, with the right setup, would be great at Mega. So the 29+ might not be as entertaining as watching Blake suffer on a fatty but it would be an interesting experiment of an unconventional setup

Ti is lighter, but steel stronger. Common misconception its stronger and lighter. Take pedals, those with a Ti axle are lighterbut have a lower rider weight limit than the same pedal with hollow cro-mo (steel) axles normally. Ti frames tend to be more compliant than steel, which is itself usually more compliant than aluminium

re the motion sickess guy, im pretty sure its because he grabs the handlebars too tight. Hence the knuckles and motion sickness(lack of impact absorption through the arms)

#AskGMBN Hi guys thanks for the great videos. My rear tire has worn out , what's the best option: upgrade rear or buy new front one and use the old for the rear wheel. Would it be possible to have tags of the questions that have been asked in the episodes as it's hard to remember when similar question was asked so would make it easier to find the answer. Cheers

#AskGMBN I just got back into Mountain Biking to spend more time on the mountain in the summer (I'm an expert skier and spend my life on the mountain in the winter). My problem is that I feel like skiing makes me way too confident barreling down trails. How would you measure your progress if you don't trust your comfort level? Right now, I'm mostly relying on whether or not I fall...

For extracting rounded off hexes/screws/things, if you don't want to cut a slot for a flat bladed screwdriver, I really would recommend things like these for hexes: www.machinemart.co.uk/p/laser-6845-11piece-damaged-cap-head-boltscrew-/ or these for evreything else: www.machinemart.co.uk/p/cht123-screw-extractor-wrench-set/

Re motion sickness, get checked by doc, could be a ventilation issue or heart issue like hole in the heart etc. See ur doctor

#AskGMBN hi I’m looking to buy a new helmet and I’m debating to get a full face or half as I live nearby bike park Wales I think I should get a full face but I often go on longer rides to so shall I buy a full face or half face or is there any other helmets to recommend for me on a budget.

Go for one you can switch the between full face and open face it won't be as cheap but it will keep you from buying two helmets

#AskGMBN thank for the advice last week, I’ve got a new question for you this week. I’ve been renting a bike when I go to Whistler and I’m planning on buying the same model next year from the same shop when they sell the 2020 version, the bike is a Pivot Firebird 29, my question is, do you think it’s a good or bad idea to buy a rental bike as your first full suspension mountain bike?
