Mel was the best storyteller ever. He would draw you in and have you right up til the end. Man I miss him and all the other singers we’ve lost over the past few years.
This song came to mind tonight, so I looked it up. I enjoyed Mel's first hilarious story, then as the band kicked off this song, I saw our ole family friend, Ernie Reed, front and center playing fiddle. What a treat on this holiday of reminiscing about our musical past. It's hard to beat this music and its musicians. I hope some of the youngins that we see keep it alive.
I like the band too. they sound great and look sharp. You don't see that much anymore outside the older artists. They actually care as much about how the band looks as how it sounds.
I heard a story on Country's Family Reunion about Johnny Russell asking Mel about when he sold bibles and Johnny said "Hey Mel, how many bibles you sell a day" and Mel said "368". Johnny said "How did you sell that many bibles in one day" and Mel said "Well I-I-I-I walk up to the door and say Hi-Hi-M-Hi-Hi M-M-M I'm Mel T-T-T-Tillis and I'm se-se-selling bibles, would you like fo-fo-for me to s-s-s-sell you one or would you pr-pr-prefer I read it to you". Mel Tillis was a great storyteller and a fine singer-songwriter 🙏
