Melancholy evokes images of poets and artists for whom suffering and giftedness go hand in hand. Creative ability as compensation for affliction is depicted in Greek myth by the god Hephaestus. Rejected by his goddess mother and cast out of Olympus, alienated Hephaestus forged magnificent, magical objects for the gods. Such archetypal imagery can inform our understanding of the kind of depression that seems intrinsic but may have roots in early, adverse childhood experiences of emotional deprivation or rejection. Early loss, separation from a primary caregiver, or relational abandonment can have lifelong repercussions. Such disruptive events, though not available to consciousness, nonetheless infuse adult attitudes and attachments. To name the void creates space for mourning and healing, and like Hephaestus, finding the inner fire to forge something new.
HERE’STHE DREAM WE ANALYZE:
“In my dream I am walking, I think toward a house. I'm walking through a wilderness area that has many, like at least 2 dozen, dead rabbits. They are dismembered. And I look at them, but when I do, I feel that I have violated their death. I'm not sure. I know a wolf got them but I never see the wolf. I see one of the rabbit's faces, and even though it is missing it's lower half (and is quite bloody), I know its soul is still alive, though its body is dead. I don't ponder this for very long in the dream. After that, I pass the rabbits, and I'm in the yard of what I think might be my home. But it is flooded - the aftermath of a flood. There is a large (80 foot) oak tree in the middle of the flood waters. Next to it is a tower of toadstools, each growing on top of one another. They are beautiful. They are lime green and white, almost glowing. I never go into the house because I'm amazed by the mushrooms. I take picture after picture of them from various angles.”

The duplicitous nature of the melancholic attitude is something that I have experienced personally and also in relationship to my best friend who died in 2018 by a sort of prolonged suicide. My friend in particular exhibited much of what you talk about in this episode. He was on the one hand an incredibly intense, insightful, emotionally present person who drew others to him with his vibrant personality. On the other hand he was in love with his sadness in a very self-destructive way that led to his untimely death at the age of 38. Like the character Lisa talks about in Melancholia, his brooding had a selfish side and he was so caught up in his inner world that he entertained certain solipsistic trains of thought. I knew him well enough that he directly discussed these thoughts with me from time to time. As I have matured I have learned how to better control my melancholic tendencies so that I do not become consumed by them as I did as a younger person. There is definitely a wonderful aspect to the capability of seeing the darkness and moving into it fearlessly, but if you become consumed by it you can and will lose yourself entirely.

Beautiful reference of Rumi’s life! I’m his forever fan, some of the details of his story were mentioned inaccurately, but I highly highly recommend you read Elif Shafak’s novel about Rumi, Shams, and a surprise mini novel within a novel - if you liked his story - the book is called 40 Rules Of Love. It will make you cryyyyy if you consider yourself to be a melancholic person, or even better - an INFJ.

Also, another interpretation of the dream. The rabbit could be the fear and the vulnerability that the lady experiences. “ When I look at them , I feel I violated their death”. When I look at my fear, the life will flourish like the nature she sees. The dream could communicate about fear and grief of what was lost and embracing that “ I looked at the rabbits” . Looking at the rabbits ( at her own trauma , her own fear of leaving that community) could lead to joyful life . Is an invitation to embrace her feelings fully and a reassurance that life for her will be joyful.

I’ve been struggling to find meaning in my life these couple of days. It’s been rough. But the image of Hephaestus constantly and persistently forging “despite of” deeply resonates with me. I think I’ve found an image that I can hold into, that I can rally of against the deep current with-in and with-out that is trying to wash me. Thank you!
