This was very pleasant to watch, in fact I did so twice. I liked how you used bamboo for the spars and attached the mast so easily using the end shape of the mast. I subscribed and will check out your blog site. Thumbs up.

It is not bamboo but ash wood

@@0marijke I feel so stupid. When I saw the pieces connecting the outrigger they looked like bamboo to me so for some reason I assumed the mast was also bamboo but I was so confused about how you were able to attach the mast. I thought you had made some clever carpentry and attached a wood piece to the bamboo to make a crook that would fit the mast to the crosspiece. Ha! What a dummy. Thanks for making the video, it was a pleasure to watch. If I had a place to keep it I would like to make a similar boat.

very educating! the crab claw just looks so good, what else would you want on an outrigger canoe??? Thanks for sharing, all d best and fare winds, from Balkan Shipyards.

So true. And the crab claw is a great sail for a small boat.

Lovely, especilly with the crab claw. I wonder if a leeboard would improve performance to windward ? A Solway Dory design is super easy to remove or fit / adjust.

I too wondered about a leeboard

Thank you for the video! A beautiful boat. How do the 2 different sailing rigs compare, in your opinion? Thanks!
@0marijke

the spritrig is easier to set. the crabclaw rig sails maybe a bit faster. we did not have a gps

Did you make the Ama out of plywood too? Fill it with foam? Nice built boat!!!!
@0marijke
@0marijke 6 лет назад
Hindukush the ama is built of pieces of foam glued to a plywood backbone and covered with glass and epoxy. Probably there are photos on our blog some years ago. catamarantortuga.blogspot.com

how does teh steering paddel actually work? Are you satisfied by it?
@0marijke
@0marijke 7 лет назад
you have to learn how to use it, but as it is a paddle you always can paddle the boat around to tack
@gordonleadbetter8352
@gordonleadbetter8352 3 года назад
how did you design the new float?
@0marijke
@0marijke 3 года назад
The original float did not have enough floating capacity. This one was build of foam around a plywood backbone. There was buoyancy needed in the ends. We now can stand on the outrigger. It is easier to couple to the beams

Nice how many hours to build this Wharram canoe?
@silasdogwood8395
@silasdogwood8395 5 лет назад
Just guessing, having built a few similar boats, maybe 100-150 hours, depending on how much attention you pay to detail. This one is clearly very clean, but you can knock one together without glass or epoxy in 40 hours that will last a few years if made from exterior grade plywood.

Hey!! It is reallt nice boat. I am Mongolian. In Mongolian no sea but only small rivers. Can this boat sail against river stream?

If the wind is with you, or if you are very good in paddling

@@0marijke Hey! Thank for your replying... I live in Ulaanbaatar city. At our city there is river Tuul. That river is in average about 40-50 meter wide and 1-1.5 meter deep.... I will say the stream is not very powerful. I want be make sailboat or catamaran to sail in that river. I think that will be almost first time in Mongolia who sails by this kind of boat. In Mongolia no tradition of navigation. Most of people newer saw sailboat. They only saw small boats with engine...I think when they will be see how sailboat sailing to any direction without motor they will admired lot of.
@0marijke
@0marijke 5 лет назад
That is quiet large, i think you can sail. James Wharram and my sister Hanneke have been in Mongolia to promote their boats. There is a mongolian woman sailing on the Wharram Tiki Lucky Fish, but she sails the ocean. Maybe you can contact them through the Wharram site

@@0marijke Thank you for suggestion. I glanced about Wharram boats and realised they are big and expensive. I want to make small boat or catamaran in low ( not more than 1000 US $) budget. I want to make by plywood small canoe or catamaran powered with sails. Is that possible to make it in that cost? Can you tell me if not secret how much expense has your catamaran? Best regards.. Khaliun.

@@hakhakuuba5073 we had left over plywood from bigger boats we have built. If you can find some wood and glue you can building cheep. Also find some plastic for a sail. Original everything was done with wild wood.
