I first saw Melanie in 1969 in a little town called Bethel in N.Y. at a festival called Woodstock. I was 13 years old and had made my way their with my older bother from Florida. An amazing thing happen the night Melanie performed, 500,000 people gave "peace a chance" and it worked. Melanie's "Candles in the Rain" describes perfectly what happened and what really took place over those three days and nights. This song is timless memory and completely accurrate. When Melanie sings "You had to be there to Remember" is so accurate, in expaining this event. "Little sisters of sun lit a fire to the soul who never knew he had a freind" for those 3 days and nights I had 500,000 freinds. Just imagine 500,000 people, a 13 year old (me) and Melanie all comimg together by chance. Or was it by chance? I do not want to sound completly crazy, but I sincely beleive their was another reason we all brought together at that place, at that particular time in history, I believe that reason was to show the world we can have peace if we really want it. I had the honor of being involve in a few video calls with Melanie in 2020,21 we discussed Woodstock, the summary was the promotor felt they would make millions, unfortunately for them that plan did not work out well, fortunately for humanity something much bigger happened, for 3 days and nights 500,000 people were brought togather at place where the color, origin, nationality, religious beliefs, sexual prefercence, how we choose to dress, or the lenth of our hair did not matter, but helping each other did. Becuase of this event and Melanies songs, I have lived my life believing we can have peace. I believe its our responseability to past this knowledge and experence on to the younger generations. I live near Bethel and got to meet Melanie's daughter at The Distillery a few years ago and then I got to be hanging with Melanie in New Jersey and then her daughter again in arizona. Can't believe Melanie's gone! 🥺💔I posted a beautiful picture of the two of us on my Facebook page. Had her album since I was three and I was born during Woodstock LOL couldn't make it cuz my parents decided to have me in a hospital in Poughkeepsie instead lol they weren't hippies at all❤ about the evil that has been ruling the world apparently actually sprayed the crowd in Woodstock because many people said they forgot stuff that weren't even doing drugs, they can't have that level of energy focused on piece together because they don't want us to recognizing that we are all one. Their goal is to keep us separate and divided and fighting amongst each other. The Deep state is truly satanic and horrific..... the Illuminati and the Freemasons etc.. even Those Who Run the World Behind the Scenes.. hidden from those groups even.. but it's so wonderful to know that they really had NO control over that many people mama and I love that😊

I was 16 in 1969, but it took some time before the Woodstock movie reached us here in South Africa, and when it did, I watched it 3 times on the Big Screen. MANYYY us were instant fans of ALL the musicians, and I adored Melanie from the first time that I listened to her songs. Had we been living in the USA at the time, my brother, a year my senior and I would have surely made our way there too. Rest In Peace, Melanie Safka. Maman was a tween when you recorded this classic in 1970. She says you are a worthy successor to Tina Tuner spiritually and vocally with your own unique power and timeliness. All the rain today was cheers greeting you in Heaven!
Damm...............I didn't expect Melanie to bring it like that. What an unexpected gift to hear this incredible extended version mashup of Candle in the Rain. Candle in the Rain is one of my favorite songs from that era and her live performance with the Hawkins singers in the Netherlands from 1970 is a historical masterpiece. Thanks for the inspiration Melanie......and the passion and purpose you bring to your music. It's always the right time to "Lay it all down".
F me. this lady blew my head apart in 1969. 50 years later i can chase her around something called RU-vid. Love you girl, just like we did back in the day. This was probably the first song that actually made me think.
I saw Melanie perform live only one time... way back in 1974, at the Valley Forge Music Faire in Pennsylvania. I've never forgotten the magic she weaved that evening! I've been a fan since the early 1970's!!!

Oh wow! Thank you so much for sharing this video. I was just scrolling through Melanie videos and bumped into this one and I'm so grateful I got to experience seeing her (somewhat) live on stage. Ya gotta love the 21st century for things like RU-vid. All the amazing performances I've missed out on are now really at my finger tips. Seeing Melanie, Judy Collins, Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell (just to name a few) doing their thing live, is like a dream come true and is actually very surreal. Thanks again for sharing this video. ✌🙂
Me too ! I remember hearing the song Brand-new Key at our local roller rink about 6-7 years old. Their policy was no repeat songs but I had to hear it again soooo bad the lady played it again for me. Then later found 8 tracks of Melanie not knowing it was the same songs.... just bought it used because the cover drew me in. Got it home and WOW 😯. What a surprise to my teenage ears.... I’d found her again at last... Of course I had to get all the records I could then. Local flea market. .50 to $1.00 each. So if the groundhog doesn’t see his shadow we’ll see you the next day. 😉

well i can say im 54 now so i remeber this song and i also rember seeing this lady sing this with the hawkins gospel quire i was a young kid then. it was such a beautiful song. and it meant somthing back then all i ask if u can all of u!! type in....LAY DOWN Melanie & The Edwin Hawkins Singers LIVE '70 (Candles In The Rain) well...u will see what i mean its in black an white such a simple time back then.
