I was a child when I discovered Melanie. In the south of France where I grew up. One radio station used to play her songs. I couldn’t understand English in those days, but I fell in love with her voice. I am now 66 years old , and still listening to her beautiful songs in India at Raza Organic Farm . I am so sorry she left us, but her songs will live on. God willing peace will come. Sat Sri Akal, Salam, Shalom, Shanti.
She and her music are very important to me........she lives on........I was lucky to see her live once at the Isle of Wight, she wa singong as the dawn came up on that Sunday morning .........one of the most magic moments of my life...........
Re: "These dark and tragic times". Don't watch the news...You'll get brainwashed with all the selective bad news pumped out 24/7. In reality the world is relatively peaceful and bright compared to real 'dark periods' in our past. e.g. the plague; 100 year wars; and global wars that killed around 80 million people (e.g. WW1 and WW2 combined) etc. I'm not saying it's all love and light today...but we're getting there.
More than even voice, which is beautiful, the Energy Melanie exudes reflects as close to Perfection of Spirit as possible. It continues through this century (see her Backyard Performances with Miley Cyrus). I thank Melanie for giving me hope and consolation through the turbulent Sixties and Seventies through the present. So fortunate to have been born during her lifetime.

@@vibesinthesky I read a science study a few years back on global conflicts, and apparently 1988 (or 1989) was the most peaceful year modern humans have known ..as there were no wars, no major conflicts, and of course no world wars. So Melanie was correct, peace did come.;-)
Love the version of this song! One of the best performers of her era. She did not get the true appreciation she deserved. The back yard sessions with Molly Cyrus are really sweet.

A truly amazing singer-songwriter. She appeared out of the heavens, shone brightly and then faded like a shooting star. There has never been anyone like her since and probably never will.
Melanie is the most beautiful and intelligent woman I have ever seen - I cannot stop watching this video and I just wish I was old enough to have met and fallen in love with her in the 60's
There are times when we are neither too young nor too old. & she's still beautiful to me. Love her tangled, grey, trying blond hair. & still singing. Still creating poetry. Still there. & she's still singing to me tonight that, maybe sometime, in her life & mine, peace may come.

There is always an endless amount of speculation about the lyrics of this song, but it is amazing that no one has ever wondered what the true meaning of this mysterious song is. If I were Melanie I wouldn't give any explanation after so much time. Keep it a secret, girl!

Yes.. 1970, returned from Viet Nam and I recall this song playing on the radio and it stopped me in my tracks. I felt Melanie wrote this for me. I cry today when I listen to it... mostly for my brothers that never came home with me.

Thanks for putting this up. This featured quite recently in a programme "Folk Singers at The BBC" I thought I had recorded it but failed. In my opinion,this song has never been, and never will be performed better than this. Superb! Thanks again.

"Please buy one”. My own take on this is that the song is about a campaigner for nuclear disarmament (popular in the 70s) who is selling lapel badges with the CND logo. “According to man - According to plan”. Man vs Nature perhaps? Or it could mean whatever you want it to mean.
@@timtimson313 Yes, i thought it could be a leaflet the character is selling, but i like the lapel badge idea better. Or it could mean: 'just buy into the belief that peace will come (if enough people buy into it).' 'According to Man' perhaps acknowledges that we don't really understand God's plan because we don't really understand what God is. I prefer the Buddhist interpretation that we are all part of the God-Consciousness. The song, especially the second verse, comes across to me as a plea for remaining true to the greater Consciousness, tuning into one's role as part of it in the face of peer pressures to conform to the conventional wisdom of the lost souls that inhabit our materialistic world. Peace can come spiritually to an individual even in the face of adversity in the wider world of Man; mankind is merely a small part of the greater whole. For me, Melanie encapsulates the ethos of the hippie search for Truth. 0:05
