After five hours in an uncomfortable economy seat with Qantas I was faced with Chaos at Melbourne Airport.
If you're flying into Melbourne Airport anytime soon, be sure to watch this video and be prepared for long delays. I'll share the chaos of the airport's recent refurbishment, which is causing disruption and long delays for arriving passengers.
Although I usually find immigration at Melbourne Airport to be one of the better immigration experiences this was a total mess. Only 5 working kiosks, one of which is in such an obscure location that it may as well not even be there, means that just our flight would need in excess of half an hour to clear immigration.
The staff were helpless and the passengers were tired and frustrated and inevitably tempers frayed.

No way Phil! I was at Melbourne Airport the same day as you- I was shooting a "Travel Sized Smackdown" for my other channel as well as two dedicated flight reviews.

I find Qantas uncomfortable in all aspects and all classes. I jumped from a Singapore Airlines BC flight to a Qantas BC flight in the space of 2 hours and noticed the narrower seat and lower quality service immediately. And the food was trash compared to Singapore. The planes were exactly the same model (B777) but the quality is much lower.

thanks for your comment, it is certainly odd that two airlines would have different width on seats. Pitch I understand, getting in more seats, but width? That I don't understand.

I think QF squeezed in an extra seat in the centre section of the two aisle B777. The seat pitch I didn't have an issue, but I'm just average height.@@mygreygapyear

"Welcome to Australia"! I flew Qantas economy Sydney to Darwin in economy in a window and it was a "never again" experience - extremely cramped and uncomfortable and not suitable for someone who's 6 foot 4... Good video and happy Christmas!

Thanks Matt, Merry Christmas, I hope you had a good one. I am fortunate in begin a full foot shorter than you so legroom isn't an issue, but I am finding more window seats tight to the window and rather than getting an extra inch or two of width I'm getting the curve of the fuselage pushing me inwards.

It wasn't great, especially as I was expecting my usual Melbourne immigration experience, which is find a row of empty kiosks, get my ticket, walk past the queue of people near the e-gates queuing for the two kiosks down there with a smug look on my face as I ask politely to get past 😊

Thanks for your comment, it was pretty bad but a whole lot worse for the passengers coming in behind us. I have to imagine that the wait time would have been an hour or more for the flights landing behind us. First world problems of course, but I do feel that airports know how many passengers are due to land each hour and it is within their operations to provide a reasonable service, and it frustrates me when they don't. Qantas 737-800 is terrible to fly on, I used them from Melbourne to Auckland work booked it. I'd never pay for it myself I use Air New Zealand for trans tasman flights

@mygreygapyear if you ever do end up flying from NZ to Australia or vice versa on Air NZ highly recommended booking seat 28F exit row with no seat in front of you and has a window :)

Sorry (but welcome) to Melbourne, wonderful city, IMHO the most UK-ist of Australian cities. You mentioned the peninsula, you staying Frankston/Mornington way?

Thanks for your comment, I agree it is a wonderful place to be, so many outdoor activities and long periods of predictably good weather to enjoy them in. And yes, my daughter lives down the Frankston/Mornington way and she kindly looks after me when I'm in town.

I hope you're here for long enough for the summer to begin@@mygreygapyear 'cause so far it's been very UK-like. In the 30+ years I've been here the weather for Victorian's has been changing to a later and later start to summer and and earlier start to winter each year. Anyway Happy NY.

Happy New Year Martin. My daughter's been living there for about years and she says that she's noticed a change in weather in that time. It seems that "summer" weather doesn't become reliable until after Christmas and then it's nice well into the Australian autumn.
