i enjoyed that. memories. so swanson street is now a no-car zone. 40 years ago i used to work in st kilda rd near the shrine. the morning routine was to pay parking meters in the side streets till 1/4 to 9 then park up on st kilda rd coz the parking was free on one side after 9 and the other side after 1/2 past 9. the south melbourne council parking cop would pull up behind you and get off his scooter to book you then you'd drive off and do a u turn to the other side and park till the melbourne council parking cop pulled up and you again had to move on. this went on till 9 o'clock. half of the office was out there doing this. towards the end of this journey we pass, on the left, what used to be one of melbourne's roughest hotels with the quaint sign out the front 'this is the show' with the first letter of each word in large capitals. it used to be called the george but i think it's had a couple of name changes since.
The George has had a number of businesses over the last few years and it's pretty tame from how you described it. Lot's has changed. It's amazing to see how this city evolves.
ah, the memories. we got into the habit of locking all the car doors if we got caught at the traffic lights opposite the george coz a couple of times we had people trying to get into the car there. and mike willessee did a special on street kids of st kilda and my old holden got filmed at the traffic lights. everyone at work saw it and i got ribbed at work the next day. "what were you doing in st kilda". coz it did have that reputation at the time. i knew one of the bouncers there back in the seventies. lovely bloke, no training in any martial arts or self defence, just built like a gorilla. he was in the front passenger seat of an ej holden that hit a pole. the metal dash board had two dents where his knees hit it. the seams at the thighs of his jeans all split open and he walked away from it. the rest had to wait for ambulances. and he always opened longnecks with his teeth. and after he'd knocked off a dozen of them he'd go and get some more. and i never saw him stagger afterwards.
I really enjoy your long tram trips. That building at 26:52 what is it? It looks like a bunch of building blocks stacked together. Very interesting. I have I think now seen all your long trip tram videos. I am not to much interested in short ones or watching them go by. I love this one its more of the scenic route. Thanks for sharing. As Melbourne has (or appears to have) a large number of different model trams, what would be nice if you could do a shortish video of which model is which. Just for us tram nutters around the world. I really do enjoy your driver view vids. Thanks.
A nice ride. I wonder what the purpose of the trip was - seeing that it began at the Queensbury Street crossover rather than at Melbourne Uni, and didn't take any passengers.
