Melismatic Singers vs. Non-melismatic Singers | Vocal Styles 

I think it's just as excellent as other techniques like volumes control, sustaining, transitions and dynamics. If a melismatic singer can execute difficult meslisma along with other technique then they are simply better. But great melisma alone isn't what makes a great vocalist however good to excellent usage should be praised just as much as people praise sustaining notes.

Although Mariah Carey is my favourite singer, she can be pretty annoying with her runs. Also Christina Aguilera with her riffs and runs, but they both sing amazing, they just oversing sometimes.

Yes, absolutely! It seems that most of them overdue it. It can also be used to hide bad singing. Most of what you hear is not singing correctly. There are a few exceptions, like Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. Most of them try to cram too many notes into one run and it destroys the flow of the song.

Im not basing it on age, im basing it on vocal capacity. She is a very good singer technically (though i am not a big fan of her tone, I find it grating) but her vocal capacity is not and will never be at the level of the aforementioned legends is why I say it.

atolm1 I know Gaga isn’t on Streisand’s level, but she is the closest to her singing style/technique today (at least out of the pop singers) and she’s much better technically then Ariana Grande or Demi Lovato for example.

Thank you buddy! Yeah, it's not like those singers I labelled as "non-melismatic" don't or can't execute any runs. Kelly for example does a lot of more simple, shorter runs.

I took not only how often they execute runs into consideration but also the complexity of them, that's why I labelled Kelly as "non-melismatic" it doesn't mean she can't construct some nice, clean runs

That's true, and while they don't really incorporate melismas in most of their performances, they all showcased surprising moments of good agility from time to time. For example: Streisand's head voice during her younger days - paired with her seamless legato, gave her the ability to sing powerfully and flexibly at the same time (e.g. "Liebestraum", "The Minute Waltz", "Who's Afraid of The Big Bad Wolf").

I think of the three main divas ( Whitney, Celine and Mariah) Mariah has the best voice. As you say the better control and overdoes it less. Sadly she has the least songs I know. The one I’m most familiarized with her music is Celine but the voice I like most is Mariah

Arrow Um no Aretha is actually the one who popularized the use of Melisma in mainstream music way before Mariah as well as the fact that Aretha and even Whitney used melisma way before Mariah even came out into fame.

I don't consider mariah to be heavily melismatic. Her melismas are very quick and smooth, for her voice was built in a much different way than others. That's why she's the only melismatic singer i actually like.

She always oversang, mariah had to make a run out of everything, she ruined the jackson 5 cover and her music is robotic as a result, listen to her national anthem, she was awful, only someone like her can make it about herself. She's vocally like an artisan made vanilla cake. Some top quality ingredients..but it’s still vanilla and not exciting.
