What A Hero Looks Like :. . . . In 1994 or so, I was going to MU ( Mizzou, University of Missouri - Columbia), and on the student music committee. We chose to spend the alloted amount, what was less than her typical performance fee, to have her come to the school. As a free show for students and anyone who wanted to come, it was the best-attended student production ever, and we turned away a couple hundred who would not fit in the thousands-seat venue. Her "Yes, I Am" album had dropped and really propelled her to stardom, and I think she had released a couple songs from "Your Little Secret", or maybe it had been released already, I can't remember. It was also Pride Week at MU, and I nervously mentioned it to her, and she publicized it during her concert and encouraged everyone to come to a showing of the Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt. Thank you for everything. PS, I think "Baby You Can Sleep While I Drive" is my fav song.

I've always thought it was incredibly generous and self-less for Ms. Etheridge to speak about the death of her son due to opioids. We can only guess there must have been some blaming criticism toward her for being a gay mom, but she rose above any potential false-blaming and has helped to lessen the crisis that is sweeping our country. Disclosure: before ''opioid abuse" was a 'thing", my late Mom struggled with it, what at the time was more-palatably called "prescription drug dependency". I thank God when I hear of the suffering or death of an addicted person to heroin that my Mom and many others did not understand the connection to that worse drug and their prescription addiction, they I guess not making the connection between the two. Thank you, Ms. Etheridge for your advocacy on so many issues, and I'm gay too, btw.
