Still one of the best covers of this song. I still get chills 20 years later. I remember sitting down in front of my tv and trying to un-pause the VCR after the commercials and get the timing perfect. This song is meant to be sung by someone who has experienced what Janis was singing about. You can look in Melissa's eyes and see that those lyrics are attached to her heart. She really did pour her soul into that performance. Without that soul, everyone else is just mimicking technique.

During the post 9/11 farewell concert one of the generators blew a fuse at the garden, and melissa sang the whole song on stage with no power to the mics and the amp on her guitar, non stop till they fixed the power

I seen this performance when it was aired back in 1995 I just wanna know who the 57 people are that don’t like this performance at all I don’t know of anybody back in 95 or today that could have done Janis Joplin justice! Other than Melissa Etheridge.

@Desiree50able I was actually watching this in my bedroom at age 14 (I had almost simultaneously "discovered" the magic of both Janis and Melissa the year before) and my mom, who loved Janis (but to my knowledge never got to see her) called from the living room, "Is Janis on?" Now, of course, I can see the differences that make Melissa Melissa and Janis Janis, but Melissa will definitely be the closest I get to Janis. That said, I've seen ME maybe 8-9 times (every Denver concert since 1994).

Having seen Janis sing waayyyy back in the day... Love Melissa, but Janis just can't be duplicated. Good effort though. People commenting on lack of applause during the song: I think they recognize this is an Award for Janis, and Melissa's performance is a tribute to her, so applause can only be given to Janis Joplin in any case.
