MELLING M296HF Oil Pump Rotor Shimming, 5.3 Chevy Engine

It's not in the instructions that came with the pump from MELLING, but when you center the pump to keep radial pressures on the rotor from damaging the pump housing it's probably a very good idea.
I'm using a pair of cutoff 0.0015" feeler gauges, placed 180° apart to hold the rotor in a central position until the pump housing is bolted down. Then I'll pull the feeler gauges out and I'll know there isn't any unnecessary pressure on the moving parts of the oil pump and the pump rotor clearances are correct.
There is also a special centering tool available -- somewhere -- but if you follow these instructions you can do the same thing.
It's all about getting the pump directly on the same center as the crankshaft to keep rotational and hydraulic pressures under control and not let them destroy the pump.

I've done a few more of these 5.3s and so far the o-ring has NOT been the problem. Mostly it's the pressure regulator that is screwed up. The pump itself cannot actually fail unless it physically cracks or so. I'm almost 100% convinced it's gonna be that regulator every time.

Very good video and great break down in the comments . Thanks. I'm about to do this again on my '05 Chevy Silverado 1500 ext cab long bed with 5.3 vortec.. low oil pressure but plenty of power and runs like a sewing machine. No rod knock, usual Chevy ticking but engine is in good shape. Changed out the oil sending unit and also checked oil pressure with a mechanical guage . It is low. Probably that stupid pick up tube O ring and/or oil pump. This time I'm putting the high volume Melling oil pump on it. My truck is the no frills 2WD work truck so I'll drop the oil pan. Still have to remove a cross member, swing the rack and pinion steering down etc. Pain in the butt but nowhere near as complicated as on the 4WD version at least.

I was freezing to death that night --- the night I made that video. Surprised I didn't record my teeth chattering since I could only 1/2 close the garage door and it was snowing into the garage 4 feet. I don't remember if I mentioned it in the vid, but the o-ring was perfect --- no squashing, no cracks, etc. Frankly, I believe the pressure regulator was the biggest problem if not the whole thing at fault and replacing the pump and the o-ring was ultimately the answer. Thanks for your comment --- if you missed it, can you hit the LIKE button? Again, thanks.

@@SurferJoe46 sounds like a fun time lol. I really hate to be freezing cold and having to wrench. You did mention that the O ring was still good. I figure if I'm going through the pain of replacing the oil pump etc I might as well replace anything I can reach. I'll inspect the timing chain as well while the covers off. I bought the truck used and the previous owner wasn't so great with oil changes and maintenance. . I did hit the like button as well as subscribe and select the bell for all new videos. I'm surprised this video hasn't garnered more attention and comments. Fear not, now that I'm here and commented you can bet there will be some ass hat troll showing up to tell me how stupid I am because of my comment 😆.

@@kaylamarie8309 I've got some other videos up --- very unprofessional for sure - and don't worry about the trolls --- I can delete them if I wanna.

@@SurferJoe46 I'll be checking them out 🙂👍 I used to let the trolls get under my skin. I usually just ignore them or laugh at their immaturity. I will on occasion if I'm bored have a brief exchange with a troll just to show them that they came to a battle of the wits totally unarmed. I usually just ignore them.

As it turned out, the Melling M295HF (High Flow) pump is exactly what I wanted and it works great! → I left the pressure regulator that came in it alone and it gave me 55lbs at idle and 70lbs running and I never thought about using the extra, "Standard" output spring that came with it. That HF pump choice decision made me worry a little bit since I know bearings can be over-flooded and cause damage - especially on an engine with 140K miles on it --- and used, not knowing the real service frequencies and quality. That the lower bolt is really nasty to remove if you don't pull the pan (4WD and I didn't want to wrestle with the suspension, exhaust and whatever other things I was gonna have to mess with just to drop the pan ... so I fought it apart with surgical tools and --- well, that info is all over the internet for anyone to read. Be sure to pack the pump with oil --- I use some 90wt gear lube mixed with the 5w/20 synthetic oil that I normally use in that engine ... and that got me oil pressure fast! I suggest that you pull the fuel pump relay though so you can crank the engine until oil pressure moves the gauge! I also suggest that the pump be centered on the crankshaft by using some 0.0015" feeler gauges between the outer rotor and the inside of the pump housing to make sure there's at least that much space available so that the crank won't be pulling down, up or sideways on the pump rotor and ruin some hard to get to parts --- again! Because I wasn't sure that I really found anything actually wrong (in a black and white way) that could have killed all the oil pressure on my 5.3, I was lookin' pretty hard for the culprit. As yet --- I'm thinking it was a combo of things ... but when the pump was out, I sent 125# of air into the pickup tube to see if it was blocked at the screen --- or whatever ---- it wasn't. The original o-ring was in very good condition --- no cracks nor was it deformed in any way --- that was worrisome too. Before I installed the pump, I also changed the oil filter with a pre-filled AC-Delco and drained and changed to Castrol full synth 5w/20. Strangely, the oil dipstick wasn't reading FULL until I got 7 quarts into it ..... strange? I dunnow. I anticipated that the oil filter might be collapsed or something worse --- but that wasn't obvious either. TBH --- I don't know what the original problem was ... but it's fixed now.
