LESSON DESCRIPTION:
What do you hear in your head when you slowly read the next line?
"All my troubles seemed so far away."
Yep, it's that emotionally-packed melodic minor scale line from Yesterday by The Beatles.
The powerful effect that comes from this melodic moment stems from the melodic minor scale.
As a continuation of my guitar scale series, this week's scale lesson covers:
• The theory structure of the melodic minor scale
• How Bach and Paul McCartney used the melodic minor scale
• The five melodic minor scale guitar patterns and how to practice them
Have the melodic minor scale guitar shapes mystified you in the past? (They did to me for years!)
If so then this video should help to clarify why this unique and rather odd scale exists and how to use it.

@@soundguitar this is what I wanted to run by you. Jotted it down earlier and pasting it here. I memorized my diatonic modes and moved all the way up the fretboard, connecting them as I went, but I had a major problem with starting a scale at any random note on the A,D,G,B, high E strings. I couldn't figure out where I was in the scale after finding my note. I solved it by simply starting on those strings with my middle finger. On the A string it sets up my mixolydian pattern. On the D string it sets up dorian. The only exception is the G string. If you use the index finger to start, it sets up aeolian. On the B string, back to the middle finger which sets up lydian. I know many people don't learn modes or connect them like that, but it's worked well for me in combination with other arpeggios, etc. Maybe it will help others running into a similar problem. Hopefully this makes sense.

Your diagram at 00:17 blew my mind, how is that melodic minor, but then I realized I was looking at it the wrong way 😂.
@user-pm2xj9st6f
@user-pm2xj9st6f 15 дней назад
Maybe it is easier to teach melodic minor as Lydian b7 and Dorian b2 for people who are more major/minor pentatonic based players. Or minor pentatonic 1 and a half steps up for altered. Example: Gm pentatonic over Em I've given it alot of thought and I had a hard time learning this scale and how to use it because I didn't know these tricks to link it up to other scales. Dominant pentatonic (E9) E mix#4 Emixb6 Ealt

Quick question, in the video, why was melodic minor scale descending played in a way that was just a reverse of ascending? Isn’t that supposed to be a reversed natural minor scale? Thanks 🙏
@user-pm2xj9st6f
@user-pm2xj9st6f 15 дней назад
Thats the "classical" form of melodic minor. Ascending gives you the leading tones up to the root. Descending natural minor the leading tones are not necessary. The jazz guys wanted melodic minor to be its own scale with 7 modes. 1 Mel min 2 Dor b2 3 lyd #5 4 lyd b7 5 loc nat 2 6 mix b6 7 altered I don't think any modern musicans use the old way anymore Natural minor Harmonic minor and Melodic minor are compatible enough you can mix, match and borrow what ever you want where ever you want as needed. So yeah, melodic minor should be learned as it's own parent scale with 7 modes.

hey this may sound dumb, i just started playing guitar somewhat seriously, why do you say for example the 'one'- that isn't the first fret, so why is that a one? or why is that a six or a seven, etc.
@soundguitar
@soundguitar Год назад
Those numbers are scale degree numbers, as in the "one" of the scale or the "six" of the scale. like "do re mi" but with numbers. hope that helps! Check out my chord theory series (featured on the main page of my channel), which covers all of that stuff from the ground up. Thanks for asking! :)

Way too much. Learn how the scale sounds in one octave and let your ear guide you around the neck. Pattern playing is pointless and not musical.
@BallsackShredder

Not working for you doesn’t mean it won’t work for everyone else. I found it extremely helpful starting out with patterns and shapes, much easier for me to connect notes and create complex speed phrases for the last 10 years of playing. Scale patterns and shapes also serve as great exercises for both hands as well.
