This video will give brief overview of melt flow index of polymers, how to determine MFI (ASTM 1238D) and importance of MFI value. MFI is used as basic tool for quality control in polymer industries.

Thanks for the vid. Im a new extrusion tech (we run mostly straight and side arm) and am tryn to help my troubleshooting capabilities... We run very old equipment many different materials. Any recommendations, resources or books on extrusion? Thank you to whomever reads this.

Hello ma'm I have few questions to you please reply. 1. If give same heat to amorphous plastic material and semi crystalline material then which one have higher viscosity and lower viscosity . For example if give 200°c temperature for both of them which one has low viscosity. 2 Generally which one is more viscous because A very important property for choosing a particular thermoplastic is the melt flow index, especially in the case of polyolefins and styrene. The higher the flow rate, the lower the viscosity of the polymer and vice versa.

When we talk about viscosity we need to know if we are talking about solid or melt or solution viscosity because different factors like crystallinity, molecular weight or molecular interaction can influence viscosity. If we are talking about solid viscosity then crystalline will have higher viscosity at given temperature but for other two it will depend upon molecular weight. For two semi-crystalline polymer, viscosity at given temperature will depend on their crystal form/crystal stability like PE melt at 135 C whereas PP melt at 165 C so at 200C, PP will have higher viscosity than PE. For amorphous polymer, viscosity will depend on molecular weight of the polymer. Polymer selection should depends on the performance requirement of the application rather than viscosity, once polymer is selected the MFI value is chosen to achieve desired processibility and performance.

MFI should be done in predried material or not necessary?
@PolymerWorld

During MFI measurement pressure is applied to pack the material in the barrel. At that time any air or moisture trapped in the material escapes. So drying does not have much effect on the MFI value unless the polymer is hygroscopic in nature.

Hello, 1. So which better for quality? High MFI or low MFI? Or balance? which mean Input must equal with the output? Exp : 5g input must equal to the 5 of MFI? 2. Let say if we test two (2) sample material MDPE 5g and the MFI both result 0.5 g/10min and 0.7 g/10min. Same setting temperature & load. So which better higher or lower MFI? Tqsm

In pure form, MFI indicate molecular weight so a polymer sample with lower MFI usually have higher molecular weight.
