Turning Copper Scrap into Copper Bars - Melting and Pouring Copper!
Since I had a viewer send some scrap Copper to me to make him a few bars and a round, I figured I'd film the process that I did.
I failed to film the more finished product as I worked them with a dremel and wet sandpaper, but I can show that on future videos.
Working with copper is much harder than working with silver since it's melting point is higher and it's cooling point comes quicker. Plus, without a large foundry, you can only do so much!
I am learning as I go though and I am getting more of a feel for working with copper. I'm sure I will continue to fine tune the process the more I practice.

Sweet Bars. Throw vinegar and salt in your tumbler with the copper for about 6hrs and they will come out beautiful without having to even use the Dremel. 3 tablespoons of salt and vinegar just past the material inside

Hey Rob! I found my first proof today, a 1999 S half dollar. It is clad and the luster is impaired, but you can still tell it is a proof! I love the copper melting videos, it looks really cool when it is glowing and you pick it up with the channellocks.

Nice job. A couple tips: first of all make sure that your molds are heated I usually just take a propane torch and give them a good heating before I pour my metal, that way I don't have so many ridges and bumps. Also invest in a belt sander a table belt Sanders not that expensive you can get one for probably under $300 at Harbor Freight. When you sand your copper make sure that you put a sheet of plastic on the floor you want to gather up all of your powder and then dump it into a jar so you can smelt it over again, the dirt and sand you can skim off as slag. I'm preparing something for you should be in the mail in about a month or so I've had two molds break on me I don't understand what's going on, too hot lol If you choose to use the wire brush method use a drill press that way you have more control and you can have a higher speed plus you don't have to hold on to a drill or burn its motor up.

No problem the best thing you did was get that furnace, by the way whenever copper begins to cool it's actually called "Freezing"... copper has spiritual properties the Native Americans say that it is a living entity.

Excellent work. I think my to-auto goes up to 1100 as well. I'll have to try again, it didnt go well for me with copper. Started to solidify almost immediately. The graphite mould you use for the bars, where you find it? I've been looking for one with that tapered shape for a while. They all seem to be straight edge so far.

@mrpyro07

How many pours can you get in a typical pouring session? I know that graphite crucibles have a life span of about 30 sessions, but I've never seen any info on how many pours someone can have per session before the crucible beings to lose some of its structural integrity. I know the numbers will differ person to person, but I'm not sure if I could expect to pour 50 ingots in a few hour period, or would the crucible fail if it was hot for that long? Thanks.
