try putting a lens infront of the 32000 lumen flashlight to focus the light into a fine point and try melting a hole through gallium figures

That's what I thought. I can't believe they didn't do this. A lens would've concentrated the light so much that they could've lit paper on fire.

It is nigh to impossible to significantly heat a shiny piece of metal with the light output from an ordinary flashlight. This is true for multiple reasons. 1) Even at 32,000 lumens, the total radiant output of the flashlight is only 47 watts (One lumen = 1/683 watts of visible light power). 2) Most of the beam was not hitting the lego figure (less than 10%). 3) Virtually all of the photons were reflected. Below is the explanation. In a shiny metal, photons (light) interact with both 1) the valance electrons of the metal lattice and 2) the electrons in the conduction band. Some of the photons impacting the metal surface are absorbed by the electrons in the conduction band. At visible light frequencies, conduction band electrons collide with the lattice electrons at a rate faster than the frequency of the visible light photons. This (conduction band electron-valence band electron interaction frequency > visible light frequency) works to prevent the absorbed energy in the conductive band from being passed on to the valence electrons in the metal lattice. Because the waves do not penetrate deeply not many of the conduction electrons see the incoming wave and not that much overall energy is absorbed. Most of the energy is reflected by the first few layers of metal atoms in the lattice with a spectrum that depends on the scattering properties of these particular metals atoms. In your experiment, the gallium was close to the light, and as the flashlight grew hot, some of the air near the flashlight was heated as well (through simple conduction). This air, heated by conduction, passed some of that heat on to the lego figure, again by conduction. Thus, it was primarily conduction and not radiant heat that melted the figure. So yes, the flashlight did melt the gallium figure, but through its by-product of heat. The photons (light) did not play a significant role. A simple way to confirm the above would be to find the isothermal zones around the flashlight, while it is on. A thermal camera or a quick-read thermometer can do this easily. Then, place two figures in the same isothermal region - one directly in the beam the light and one outside of the beam of light. Simple observation would detect whether the energy from the photons has any meaningful effect. Thanks. Always glad to see your videos come out.

Fry a pork chop. Fry T-bone steak. Toast some regular sandwich bread. Toast Texas toast (you know, since it's like two or three times the thickness of regular sandwich bread will it take longer to fully toast). Toast an English muffin. Toast a bagel. Fry a porterhouse steak. Fry a hamburger. Cook a hot dog. Make pancakes. And the ultimate, roast a turkey. Test to see which of these it CAN actually accomplish and how long it takes it.

Nate, you should try replacing the lens of that flashlight with a convex lens, then you can possibly melt the metal with the flashlight. You could also find out if it would work like a portable Solar Scorcher! -Puzzle-

Try focusing the light from the flashlight through either some convex lenses or bounce it around with a concave mirror - I bet you could do some really cool Schlieren Imaging with something that powerful.

How about trying to roast a marshmallow with the flashlight? Or just melt the inside of it. Maybe you could see what brand of marshmallow cooks faster/better.

You dont need those stuff because u can just hold it to melt😒
@wrightspot6576

Cj Rojo yeah but that’s not very entertaining, also slow. it would just be an experiment to see how quickly you could melt it, and with the laser maybe try and cut one of the figures in half

I thought of that myself BrightSpot, but not the real expensive ones just the lower scale that would light matches & such as those.
@danielpetka446

Exactly a 1W laser should melt it fairly quickly, though only at one spot.

Try casting gallium into paintballs. Try them regular, frozen, and maybe using some sort of heating system for the loader and barrel to try and shooting soft paintballs that splatter somewhat on impact.

Is it wrong that while he was “melting” the LEGO figures, I imagined how painful it must be. Especially - what I’m guessing is - the nitrogen one. And soonly after getting smashed. I just watched that like; “Oooooohhh, thaaat would huuuurt...” “Mmmmmhmhmmm.” “This is - somewhat- uncomfortable to watch.”

Try this experiment again but shine the flashlight through a series of magnifying glasses to see if it would melt the gallium with better results

What if you cast a gallium spaceship (maybe paint it?), dip it in liquid nitrogen and stick a small firecracker inside of the ship then blow it up in front of a space background. And finally play the footage in slow-mo so it looks like a huge ship exploding in space.
