Generally, melting point increases up a group and right of the period because the higher up on the periodic table, the lesser the amount of shielding effect and the more right on the period table, the more unpaired electrons float in the electron sea interacting with positively charged ions and thereby increasing strength. Also, more or less, the higher the polarizability and polarizing power (dictated by size and charge) of two elements, the more covalent and weaker it will be however there are exceptions because the shape of those elements being "more fit" with one another also plays a role in the attraction so it is not always clear cut.
