Melting Pop Tabs - Massive Aluminum Tab Melt - Melting Pop Tabs at Home - The Growing Stack

Today I melt down a few thousand pop tabs. I had a lot of friends and family save tabs for me. It took quite a bit of time to save this many just to melt in an instant. Its a simple melt today, but I still love melting aluminum cans or the tabs by themselves.
I hope you enjoy...

It's so cool how molten aluminum has a solid layer on the outside so it always looks like (and technically IS,) its own little self-contained package, constantly recycling and re-forming that super-thin solid outer coating. I wonder how thick that solid layer is. It must be very thin, like a fraction of a millimeter.

Hello from NY. My family collects can tabs as a fundraiser for our local cancer support group. I recently turned in 1800 pounds of just tabs. That was 15 full 55 gallon barrels of tabs. We get 50 cents per lb for them. I've often thought it would benefit us to melt them down first but it looks like it might hurt us more than help. It was very interesting watching you melt those down. I would be interested in buying some of your cancer ribbon ingots if you can pour them a bit thinner.

@ParkerUAS
@ParkerUAS 3 года назад
If the sleeves are a lightweight cotton, it is actually preferable. I live in the Desert Southwest and the thing with dry heat is the heat from direct sun exposure. You ever stand in front of a throw heater and get too warm on your face, but your clothing sort of buffers it? It is like that. The whole trick is super breathable fabric so you get airflow, but enough protection that your skin is shaded. Note, all the above means nothing in humid weather.

I don't think it is porosity or the finished bar would look like a sponge I think that the aluminium in the tabs and tops are a stiffened alloy to resist the pressure of the beverage. When melted down with the rest of the can the alloy is "watered down" thus becoming less viscose. Any more information about this theory??

🤔 I probably could with copper. That would be a monster!
@jl3390
@jl3390 3 года назад
@@TheGrowingStack The problem is that the forge is too small to melt that much of any one metal. You need to find a way to melt all of it at once so it is molten at the time you pour it, or it won't fuse. Having said that, it applies to a single metal. If you were to layer metals of increasing melting points, they would fuse to the previous layer to some degree by creating a small amount of alloy with it, and would probably make for a pretty cool video. :-)

I have. I didn’t get it quite hot enough though. It was running out of the crucible very slowly like super thick honey. So it didn’t get it 100% right, and also what I did manage to “pour” cracked pretty quickly. I didn’t put it back into the furnace though to help the annealing process(which I’m not sure I could do correctly anyhow, I think glass needs to slowly cool down over a long period of time) I may try again some day and film it and put it up. 👍

a NEW way of melting, i don't know if this will work or not, but i suppose you could give it a try, i remember seeing a Fresnel lens setting a piece of paper on fire in less than a second, a long time ago, and was thinking that you might want to try to give it a go, you might want to give this a try on a crucible that you don't mind losing, it could shatter it, though i don't know if it will work or not, they work most efficiently in a place with a lot of sunlight, i will add the link below, you get 2 lenses , and you may want to build a rack to set them in before you attempt to melt melt, it may take a while for the sun to reach the needed temperature to melt, BOTH lenses will need to be focused on to the same spot, BUT, they MUST NOT be placed one on top of the other, it will reduce their effective ness , just focus them both on the same spot and wait, i have no idea how long it will take for things to heat up, or if this will work at all, any way, good luck if you decide to try this, i would love to see if it works, i hope so. www.amazon.com/Fresnel-Acrylic-Magnifier-Heating-Education/dp/B072Q2VX66/ref=asc_df_B071FRGJLJ/?tag=&linkCode=df0&hvadid=416638584393&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7049568935744157285&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9011659&hvtargid=pla-947167104397&ref=&adgrpid=93602482973&th=1

unfortunately his collection of aluminum isn't worth much @ 20 cents pound Where 32 cents pound for cans but if own lathe milling machine sand box making useable objects should be worth more than cans pace industries an local foundry buys aluminum in 100 pound ingots has to be tested inspected for purity ,have a forge not quit as motivated, have forge mill lathe sand box like copper
